A few photos of the dis-assembly, cleaning and reassembly of a C&O H-7a 2-8-8-2. This model was fairly tarnished and had dark spots in the finish. It also was missing a tender step and needed a good cleaning and lube. The cleaned and reassembled model.
This beauty belongs to my friend Scott, he asked me to give it a weathered look as it was too black to see all the wonderful detail that this model has. Here are a few before & after photos of the weathering paint.

I was happy to buy this model this evening from an Ebay listing. It is a rare "Ruby Signature" model imported to the US by Gem Models in 1964 and made by Olympia Models. Only 50 were ever produced for Gem, this is number 26 of 50. (These photos are from the Ebay Listing)
I was looking through photos of Kenichi's layout and found so many small details that I had never focused on. So I decided to blow up a few areas and re-post them. All the photos are located in one of my albums. Kenichi took the photos and built the models. He does great work.
Kenichi has added to his layout, he sent a single photo of the new addition, I broke the photo down into several areas to highlight the great detail he has put into his work.
This is a Custom Brass New York Central P-2A Electric Locomotive in HO scale that I bought recently. I spent this weekend repairing it. It was a basket case and was missing some parts. I still have to find a pantograph shoe for the roof to complete it, but, now it looks much better and runs very well.

The beautiful layout work of Kenichi Matsumoto - Mr. Matsumoto, the former editor of Train Magazine (Japan) and editor of The Art of Brass, The Tenshodo Book and several other publications regarding brass models trains, kindly allowed me to post a few photos from his layout. Kenichi took these photos and sent them to my Friend Sean, and myself recently. I will edit the titles to add information shortly.
I have re-assembled this model after cleaning and repair of broken and missing parts. It was a rather sparse in details, and I did not add any to this project just to keep the appearance original. Some small items still need tweaking, but, for the most part it is done. This is the first Akane model that I have seen that came with a serial / production number. This one is number 93, and it is stamped in several locations with the number. These are common models, so this must be number 93 of hundreds made. This is the 1959 run year, with un-sprung drivers. The videos are the first and second test runs after assembly, they are not good, but, you get the idea anyway.

This is a Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q) S-2 type 4-6-2 in HO scale brass by Kumata for LM Blum Models. This model has severe damage due to foam rot in the original box. The paint was ruined by the decaying foam and most likely parts of the brass surface will require repair because of etching of the brass. These are not extremely rare models, but, they don't show up everyday either. There were 562 of them made by Kumata in 1967. PFM also produced 5 of them in 1960. The PFM version is extremely rare.

This is the Amtrak RTL Truboliner model from Rapido Trains. These were made by Rohr a company in California back in 1976. This model is the phase III late version 152,173,174,175, 153.
Kenichi: Last 2 weeks, I have been trying double-heading of the NP Northerns with the 11-14 cars North Coast Limited with the image of the prototype pictures in the book. Their Continental Divide division sometimes double-headed their 4-8-4s for breaking-in when one of the engine was freshly out-shopped from their Livingstone Shop. All of the passenger cars in my North Coast Limited are brass-made and the consists are so heavy. I am adding more weight to rear end of the engine's boilers."

This 1930's Lionel Standard gauge No. 384 2-4-0 is a good example of an original condition, used, but well maintained, model. Considering it's original owner received it at around 6 years old, it has held up very well. He, by the way, still owns this same engine some 70 years later. It is here to have some light maintenance done so it will be ready to circle the Christmas tree next month.
My HO scale models of Burlington Northern (BN) 6621 and 7502 were at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers model railroad in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA, on Saturday, March 22, 2025. BN 6621 is a Athearn Genesis HO F45 model and the 7502 is a Scale Trains SD40-2B model.
The real 6621 was an EMD F45. It was built in 1970, serial number 36348. It was retired in 1985 and scrapped.

This is a rare model, only 50 made by Olympia Models in the early 1960's. I was not able to purchase this model, however, I wanted to post the photos from the Ebay listing for those who may have an interest.

An HO-Scale commuter train is seen at a model railroad show in LaGrange. Burlington Northern E9AM #9915 is on the point. The actual #9915 was built in 1955 as CBQ #9985A and rebuilt as #9915 in 1973. As seen here, this is likely in the RTA era or even early Metra, the adjacent ATSF passenger train notwithstanding.
CBQ and BN referred to its commuter trains as "Dinkies". The nickname has persisted into the Metra/BNSF era.
HOn3 models representing what might have been seen on the Utah & Northern railroad in Idaho or Montana in the 1880s.
Utah & Northern and Denver & South Park & Pacific were both owned by Union Pacific and traded equipment back and forth as needed. Several South Park Mason Bogies are documented as having run between Ogden Utah and Butte Montana.
The smoke and steam effects were painted in Photoshop.
A recent purchase, the model was in rough shape. All of the valve gear needed work, many parts needed to be re-soldered. Made by Akane Models on March 11, 1963. Distributed in the USA by Gem Models.
On the HO scale Freemo model railroad, a mix of sections belonging to the Skill Wise organisation and local individuals.
It is that time of year again - our live steam railroad's Fall Meet. Shown is Joe Devlin's latest offering (Alameda Car Works), the handcar, parked out of the way for the AT&SF "Chief" (one of Joe's earlier offerings), making a brief station stop on the St. Croix Railroad.
I think this was a 3 second exposure with no additional lighting, ASA 400, Pentax K20D.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, my HO model of Southern Pacific (SP) 3509 crosses the Lower Mouse Creek Trestle, on the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC), in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA. This is a BLI model.
The real SP 3509, was an SP Class B-1, Berkshire 2-8-4. Reportedly: It was built by Lima in 1928 as B&M 4019, serial number 7296. It was purchased by SP in 1945, converted to oil in 1950 and retired and scrapped in 1951.
