A rainbow layered pastry, known as lapis sagu or kueh lapis. A traditional favourite in the South-east Asia. :)
This treat brings back waves of childhood memories, of me peeling the layers off neatly and rolling them up before popping it in my mouth.
Traditionally, the top layer is always red, although I have yet to discover why.
Available in the store. (check my profile!)

I'm making this charm for a "Starfish & Coffee" bracelet I'm working on. It's a song by Prince and the chorus line goes like this: "Starfish & Coffee, maple syrup and jam, butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of HAM" LOL! I didn't think a "side order" (slice) of ham would be durable enough to take the punishment of being on a bracelet, so I opted to just make the entire ham. ;-) I have all the other components worked out and this was my last hurtle. Soon it will be ready for assembly.
Crafters notes -
After 3 tries at making a miniature ham, the third try was a success. Yay!
First ham: was too big, bone is in the center of ham instead of off to the side and the color is wrong.
Second ham: Color of meat is better but the color of the 'fat' is too translucent. Skin and ham texture are better.
Third ham: Fat color is perfect, but just a tad too much texture on the meat. This will do for now.
No, I haven't taken up building miniature models of Tuscan towns. This is a digitally processed version of a photo I took in Siena on vacation 2006. Is it convincing?
Enthusiasts have been playing around with tilt-shift miniature faking for a while, but the website TiltShiftMaker makes the process easy as pie.

This quilt is a one inch scale, crib sized quilt. It is hand crafted and made up of 150 individual 1/4 inch squares. The fabrics are two blue and mauve cotton prints and one mauve solid. The brass plated stand is imported. The quilt is folded to fit on the stand but is not permanently attached to it. You will be amazed at the precision and attention to detail in this quilt.
This miniature steam engine pulls passenger carriages on the 15 inch gauge Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway near the coast in Kent. Named "Hercules" it was built in 1927 by Davey Paxman & Co. Rebuilt in 1936 and overhauled in 1978 and 1996-7, she was involved in an accident in 2005 and was rebuilt with a large-capacity tender and painted in her current splendid Midland red livery.
The painting, acrylic on canvas, was done by Graham Lees and is in the collection of his parents, Evelyn and Leonard Lees of Busselton, Australia.
These are most of my painted miniatures on display in my apartment finally. This picture is out of date and never had all my painted miniatures in it to begin with. I need a fourth display case
A Persian miniature is a small painting, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West. Miniature painting became a significant Persian form in the 13th century, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature in Turkey, and the Mughal miniature in the Indian sub-continent.
The themes of Persian miniatures are mostly related to Persian mythology and poetry. Western artists discovered the Persian miniature around the beginning of the 20th century. Persian miniatures uses pure geometry and a vivid palette. The allure of Persian miniature painting lies in its absorbing complexities and in the surprising way it speaks to large questions about the nature of art and the perception of its masterpieces.
