This millipede is 1mm in diameter and 2 cm long. It has a somewhat metalic looking black dorsal side. Anyone know what kind of millipede it is? Oh yeah, found this in my yard on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

This is my first work created with the "3D hack" for Apophysis. I cheated a bit by post processing the bottom half of the flower so that it matched the top.
Metallic beetle (Chrysolina fastuosa) found in a single patch of nettles under a tree covering an area of about 2 square meters. There were hundreds of them around, most were difficult to get too, however this and a few others were roaming around on the ground so made good subjects.

The metal areas have been drybrushed/stippled/scrubbed with Boltgun Metal or Tin Bitz, and then the whole thing washed with liquid talent also known as Devlan Mud/Agrax Earthshade.

These guys are flocking in from New Guinea in their hundreds at the moment. The fastest nest builders i have ever seen, which they will use over the next few months then they return north. once the babies fledge they move around feeding in huge flocks moving extremely fast.

They are very social and flocks of them build messy suspended globular nests in large groups hanging from the same branches.
They are not fearful of humans and their activity on the ground below, being well separated from them by altitude, but a loud noise will see them fly out in a tight formation, circle, then return to their nests.
