Metadata is a fancy word for data about data. A good friend is an expert in electronic archiving and library science. Just consider the Transformation in computer hardware and data management in the past decade.
On the table is an IBM ThinkPad 380D, circa 1998, 2 inches thick with a 2GB hard disk. On the IBM is the 160GB hard disc from my 2008 Asus Netbook. Recently, the Asus was upgraded to a 320.

This image of Earth’s city lights was created with data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). Originally designed to view clouds by moonlight, the OLS is also used to map the locations of permanent lights on the Earth’s surface.
The brightest areas of the Earth are the most urbanized, but not necessarily the most populated. (Compare western Europe with China and India.) Cities tend to grow along coastlines and transportation networks. Even without the underlying map, the outlines of many continents would still be visible. The United States interstate highway system appears as a lattice connecting the brighter dots of city centers. In Russia, the Trans-Siberian railroad is a thin line stretching from Moscow through the center of Asia to Vladivostok. The Nile River, from the Aswan Dam to the Mediterranean Sea, is another bright thread through an otherwise dark region.
Even more than 100 years after the invention of the electric light, some regions remain thinly populated and unlit. Antarctica is entirely dark. The interior jungles of Africa and South America are mostly dark, but lights are beginning to appear there. Deserts in Africa, Arabia, Australia, Mongolia, and the United States are poorly lit as well (except along the coast), along with the boreal forests of Canada and Russia, and the great mountains of the Himalaya.

Die Legende vom Kampf um Seturia

Der Kampf um Setúria
Die andorranisch-spanische Grenze fällt nicht immer mit der natürlichen Abgrenzung geographischer Merkmale zusammen. Ein Beispiel für diese Besonderheit haben wir im Weideland von Setúria zwischen den Dörfern Pal und Os, in der Mitte von Andorra und Spanien. Heute gehört Seturia zu Andorra. Anders in alten Zeiten ...
Die Hirten von Os und Pal verstanden nicht, wer das Weiderecht für Seturia hatte. Auch die Tiere bildeten gut getrennte Gruppen: auf der einen Seite die andorranische Herde, auf der anderen die von Os. Die Besitzer hatten die Juristen viele Male konsultiert, aber sie hatten keine befriedigende Lösung finden können. Durch die Klagen hatten die Behörden der beiden Völker endlose Versammlungen ohne praktische Ergebnisse abgehalten. Eines Tages wurde dann eine Lösung gefunden.
Zwei Männer wurden ausgewählt, einer aus Pal und einer aus Os. Sie würden kämpfen, und das Weideland würde Eigentum des siegreichen Volkes sein. Dieser etwas naive Vorschlag gefiel den damaligen Menschen, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass alle dachten, ihr Vertreter würde gewinnen. Einen Monat vor dem Kampftermin wurden die beiden Athleten ausgewählt, vermessen, gewogen; und da nichts dem Zufall zu überlassen war, wurden sie, jeder für sich, einem strengen Training unterzogen, begleitet von einer Diät, die jedes Volk am bequemsten und angemessensten hielt.
Der Mann aus Os war sehr dick, der Andorraner war knochenstark, aber dünn. Mit der Aufregung die kommen sollte, kam der Tag der grossen Prüfung. Alle, auch die Ältesten, wollten dabei sein. Die Leute sassen im Kreis und warteten auf die Ankunft der Champions. Es dauerte nicht lange, bis sie auftauchten.
Die beiden Männer rückten vor. Derjenige aus Os, der am stärksten zu sein schien, ergriff die Initiative. Der wendigere Andorraner entkam dem furchtbaren Schlag seines Gegners und floh. Er kehrte jedoch zurück und liess sich vom Gegner verfolgen; er ging wieder zurück, um den Champion von Os zu ermüden und zu erschöpfen. Als dieser sehr müde wurde, liess der Andorraner ihn zu Boden fallen und hielt ihn fest, bis der Ringrichter den Kampf unterbrach und ihn zum Sieger erklärte. Die Zuschauer aus Andorra, zunächst ängstlich, drückten nun ihre Freude aus und gratulierten ihrem Meister überschwänglich, der sie triumphierend in das Dorf Pal führte.
Das Schicksal war entschieden: Von nun an durften die andorranischen Hirten ihre Herden ins Weideland von Setúria bringen, da sie nun die Besitzer waren. Aus diesem Grund gehen jedes Jahr Ende Juni alle andorranischen Rinder, die von den Hirten gehalten werden, nach Setúria, nachdem sie vom Kaplan von La Massana gesegnet wurden. Den ganzen Sommer über können alle andorranischen Hirten frei und glücklich im berühmten Weideland wirtschaften, und an Sommerabenden ausführlich von den Heldentaten ihres ungeschlagenen Helden erzählen.

Focus stacked... Metadata are shown on the right. The important thing on the latest focus stack samples that I have produced with the Fujifilm X-T3, is that one can use the Fuji "Focus Bkt" function in 'handheld'. it's of course better to do it on a tripod with no environmental vibration etc etc, but even in handheld, with some minor movement of the hands, as long as micro movements don't interfere with the actual capture (thus using adequate shutter speeds and/or OIS), Photoshop is gonna take care of the rest via frame alignment. The FS process is semi automatic and straightforward and requires only a minimum of human effort, so that Fuji FS becomes really efficient (of course not G9 efficient, but it renders better quality than G9 at all times) to the point that it can be used in many practical cases than the usual application areas till now of primarily product and macro photography, traditionally necessitating FS techniques. Nowadays you can shoot landscapes with FS and you won't even need that many frames to achieve sharpness that only fish-eye lenses were able to achieve, from here to infinity and beyond... without the artefacts of a fisheye lens, of course.

Context
The Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial is home to the graves of 5,329 members of the United States military who died in World War II. It is one of fourteen cemeteries for American World War II dead on foreign soil, and is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The ninety and a half acre cemetery and memorial is located in Neuville-en-Condroz, near the southeast edge of Neupré, Wallonia, Belgium. It is one of three American war cemeteries in Belgium, the other two being at Flanders Field and Henri-Chapelle.
Layout and memorial
The Ardennes American Cemetery is generally rectangular in shape. Its grave plots are arranged in the form of a Greek cross separated by two broad intersecting paths. At the east end of the traverse path is a bronze figure symbolizing American youth, designed by sculptor C. Paul Jennewein. The cemetery is surrounded on all sides by stands of trees.
An approach drive leads to the memorial, a rectangular structure bearing on its south facade a massive American eagle with three figures symbolizing Justice, Liberty, and Truth and thirteen stars representing the United States. This facade was designed by C. Paul Jennewein. The facade on the far (north) end, which overlooks the burial area, bears the insignia in mosaic of the major United States units which operated in northwest Europe in World War II. Along the outside of the memorial are the "Tablets of the Missing", granite slabs on which are inscribed the names of 462 American missing (15 Navy and 447 Army and Army Air Forces) who gave their lives in the service of their country, but whose remains were never recovered or identified. Within the memorial are a chapel, three large wall maps composed of inlaid marble, marble panels depicting combat and supply activities and other ornamental features.
