After declaring an technical issue, this Air Force Reserve KC-135R, based at Grisson AFB, made a safe landing at Eindhoven AFB on friday june 17th. It was still present on a sunny sundaymorning, awaiting repairs. On Scramble messageboard, the following was posted;

This is a kitchen message board that I made by altering a cookie sheet. I painted the sides with Ranger's Crackle Distress Paint and added ink to 'age' it even more. The Jenni Bowlin buttons have magnets on the back and can hold little notes in place. The stamps are all from Unity Stamp Company's Birdie Inspiration set.

Looking at US-34/Big Thompson Avenue going toward the center of Estes Park, with the Rocky Mountains in the background.

The message sign indicates that all entrance reservations into Rocky Mountain National Park were full already for the day.

This was on an early morning walk from my hotel to the nearby Starbucks and Visitors Center - photo taken around 6am.

(Note: There is a wonderful and wide walking/biking trail on the south side of US-34 - I decided to walk across to get a good pic of the mountains and the message sign).

The "From the Messageboards" column is set in a fictional internet forum made up almost entirely of trolls of this type.

Some of the more amusing ones are "justice_4_maddie" and "rot_in_hell_myra", two usernames obsessed with murderers. "Edgar" is a leftist conspiracy theorist unaware that his costume (a "giant finger" representing the wagging finger of the nanny state) looks like a penis.

"Aethelstan" is a "true Englishman with a thousand years of Angelfolc blood" who hates the "mongrel British". "Bogbrush" is a naive but well-meaning soul who usually ends a thread with "great stuff guys" and is often physically injured by others, and there are several right wing psychos with elaborate Punny Names, such as the irrepressible "Last_Taxpayer_Standing_in_Harrietharmanistan_in_the_E.U.S.S.R"

" "Family_man", one of the commenters in From The Messageboards, whose catchphrase is "Any of these (subject of news) come near my girls and I swear I'll do time".

The lunatic right wingers calling for people to be strung up (while at the same time having the most basic of grammatical skills, leaving their posts completely unreadable), the normal people (who are articulate, come across well, and provoke reactions from the lunatic right wingers) and the stupid internet users that make up the remaining percentage and who just use "lol" every 4 words. "

" We opted for names that just somehow felt right. Madeleine for our first girl, and with the twins we originally thought of Holly and Ivy, but went for Holly and Jessica in the end. Then came Edith, which we saw on a beautiful headstone for a little girl in an old churchyard. The boys were Jamie, Rhys and lastly baby Peter. I fell pregnant again last month, and we are thinking Daniel if we are blessed with a boy. - Hattie1

An offhand insult on an internet messageboard has spiralled my budding paranoia into full-blown depression.

Yeah, I know I shouldn't care, but sometimes it really does build up - especially when you fear it may be *true*.

So, not exactly uncluttered or anything, but I never claimed to go for that look. Cork side covered with an Ikea home dec fabric that had been sitting uncut in my stash. White board side treated with three layers of chalkboard paint. I fit the shelves in the bookcase (which I still love) to create the perfect nook for the board. Larry Flynt's Hustler Hollywood Store is coming to Columbus. Returning to his hometown, the store does not come without its share of detractors. My first memory of Larry Flynt was when he pushed first amendment rights during the late 70's in Cincinnati by mailing booklets about war and child abuse as a means to raise awareness about such important issues.

Regardless, I look forward to meeting Mr. Flynt and and accepting his investment of cash into such a great community project as That Car.

On my morning commute, driving northbound I-35 between the US-69/18th St Expwy/Roe Ave interchange (Exit 232B) and the Southwest Blvd/Mission Rd interchange (Exit 233A) - and noticing the KC Scout message boards indicating an estimated 20 minute drive to Downtown KC. On most mornings, that 4 mile drive is listed as taking 5 minutes. Obviously some accident or incident was causing the major slowdown - and I ended up taking Southwest Blvd toward my office that morning (as did every other vehicle on I-35 that morning).

The Feeding Frenzy Of The Flea award for April, 2007.

The guy with all the Mac parts also had a big box full of NEC MobilePro 790 Handheld PCs. This one of Microsoft's many Great Ideas That They Simply Abandoned.

A Handheld PC is a hybrid between a PDA and a notebook. You start off with a PDA sort of processor and operating system and apps. You build this inside a package that's just big enough for a full-sized notebook keyboard. And hell, if the thing's going to be no smaller than a full keyboard, then you might as well put in a full-width VGA screen. Just make it half as tall.

Result: a very cool and useful item. I knew that as an HPC, it'd have pocket editions of Word, Excel, and Windows Explorer built in. I also remembered (and confirmed via visual inspection) that it'd also sport a CompactFlash slot and a PC Card slot.

Think for a moment; I bet you'll make the same conclusions as I did.

Yes, it's six years old but it's also damned useful. Word means that I can use this as a "real" word processor, complete with special formatting, and can import/export files to and from my Macs pretty easily. Ditto for the spreadsheet: I can easily AppleScript some stuff to transmogrify all kinds of database info into a table format that Pocket Excel can deal with.

And I can move files between the MobilePro and a modern machine with little trouble. I don't have to worry about the lack of a data cable, or the fact that Windows Mobile/PocketPC hardware requires ActiveSync, because I can simply save things to a Compact Flash card and then stick the card into a USB reader.

And I can use that CF card without tying up the PC Card slot...which means I can throw in a WiFi card and keep up with websites and stuff. I'd have to check to see if Pocket Explorer supports secure connections, but if it does, that's the email solution, too: I can just use a webmail client.

To say nothing of the possibility of avoiding Windows CE completely. Maybe someone's ported a Linux to this thing?

One problem with these surplus units: the batteries have no recharges left in 'em. But hell, I've cracked open battery packs and replaced old cells before. Even if I didn't, it works off of 7.4 volts. That's acceptably close to a multiple of 1.5, which means that I can homebrew an external battery pack without any problems and I should be able to find an AC adapter somewhere in my Big Tub Of Power Supplies.

These sold for more than a grand when new, which is why the platform failed. You were paying a hell of a premium for this device...it didn't do nearly as much as a notebook, and while a cheap notebook still cost $1500, a HPC was at least in that ballpark.

Price at the Flea: $10. And the seller was smart enough to have a power supply handy, so you could test them out before buying.

I'd been working my way through the box for a few minutes (choosing one that was cosmetically good, no bits missing, and which appeared to boot up and have a bright screen) when suddenly, everyone appeared to see this thing at once. He sold completely out...and at that price, no wonder.

Yup, I bought one meself. Ten bucks! How can you go wrong? I've wanted a good, satisfying mobile word processor. Like when I'm headed out the door for lunch and I want to do a little writing, but it's not worth making a big scene with my MacBook (or doing all the things I'd have to do to safely unmount the external hard drive and other stuff).

A HPC like this one also has an odd little advantage: it does have Windows Explorer and a media player, but for all intents and purposes all I can use it for is word processing. It's like a typewriter: it won't help to distract you with access to Bloglines and Flickr and YouTube is completely out of the question. Potentially, you could be way more productive with this thing than you might with a $2500 lunch-tray notebook.

I know I can be more productive with this during my usual coach-class flights. You have to be pretty damned tiny in order to be able to use a full-sized notebook on an airline tray table. I can do it, but (a) I have to keep my elbows out and my wrists cocked, which hurts, dammit, and (b) if the lout in front of my reclines his seat back without warning, the screen's toast. This thing looks like it'd be perfect for writing a column or a blog post or whatever.

If you did buy one, click the above link for NEC's legacy support site, which includes a PDF of the manual. Head on over to eBay to buy a new battery...I quickly found one for $20.

Check out this page on handhelds.org for instructions and downloads to install Linux. You'll wind up with PicoGUI up and running; I'm not 100% convinced that this is an improvement on what's built-in. But getting a WiFi driver installed on this thing is not a problem, so no worries there.

Finally, HPCFactor.com seems to be a good supersite. It's still very current, with active messageboard filled with answers.

Driving southbound I-35 before the 95th St Interchange, looking at a KC Scout Message Board indicating very slow traffic ahead.

The exit to Santa Fe, which is just over 6 miles from that message board and usually takes 6 minutes during "normal" traffic and usually 8-10 minutes during evening rushhour, is showing an estimated time of 25 minutes - indicating that there something near I-35 or 119th St Exit causing the backup (found out it was an accident). I ended up exiting to 95th St and used city roads to get home in Olathe.

A chorusline of brightly colored translucent resin and glass beads make these corkboard pins a perfect way to give life to your home/office bulletin board or to display/store your jewelry.
