with my secret messages inside........

this is in Vietnam, a day before leaving for Thailand

Hero has more of an Asian face, Message has more of a Barbie Asian face. But both are from the same production period.

You can just make out the words on the fortune cookie fortune if you zoom in.

"A kiss can beautify souls, hearts and thoughts."

I have no idea where this came from. I found it under the kitchen table last night after dinner. We haven't had Chinese food in a while. So I'm taking this one as another message. Perfect timing and all too.

I dictated a message to Lauren, my fiancee.

Me: "Message Lauren: Hi honey, do you have any idea what you want for dinner? I love you."

Siri: "OK, I'll send it."

(Siri transcribed the note perfectly, including the punctation which I specified as "question-mark" and so forth.)

The Postcard

A Valentine's Series postcard.

The card was posted in Newcastle-on-Tyne on Friday the 15th. March 1918 to:

Mrs. Whitehouse,

4, Charlton Cottages,

Pemberton Road,

Lyndhurst,

Hampshire.

The message on the back of the card was as follows:

"Dear Mrs. Whitehouse,

Many thanks for pretty card.

I hope you will like this view

showing the centre of the

city".

Someone has also written 'Answered' on the back of the card.

Grey's Monument

Grey's Monument is a Grade I listed monument to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, built in 1838 in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

It was erected to acclaim Earl Grey for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832, and stands at the head of Grey Street. It consists of a statue of Lord Grey standing atop a 130-foot-high (40 m) column.

The column was designed by local architects John and Benjamin Green, and the statue was created by the sculptor Edward Hodges Baily (creator of Nelson's statue in Trafalgar Square). It was paid for by public subscription.

In July 1941, during World War II, the head of the statue was knocked off by a bolt of lightning. In 1947, sculptor Roger Hedley created a new head based on the preserved fragments of the original.

A spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform at the top of the monument, which is occasionally opened to the public. Old photographs indicate that the monument was originally on a traffic island and was surrounded by railings. These railings are no longer present, and the area around the monument is now pedestrianised.

The wide base of the monument is a popular spot for people-watching, and often acts as a venue for buskers, religious speakers and political activists/protesters.

The Sinking of a U-Boat

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, the 15th. March 1918 was an eventful day:

On that day, German submarine SM U-110 was depth charged and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean by Royal Navy ships with the loss of all 39 crew after sinking the British ocean liner Amazon.

The Sinking of Another U-Boat

Also on that day, the German submarine SM UB-106 sank at Kiel, Germany with the loss of all 35 crew. She was raised three days later, repaired and returned to service.

Adolph Ritter von Tutschek

Also on the 15th. March 1918, German flying ace Adolf Ritter von Tutschek was shot down and killed by South African ace H. B. Redler of the Royal Flying Corps over France. He had 27 victories to his credit when he died.

HMS Furious

Also on that day, the Royal Navy vessel HMS Furious re-entered service as the world's first aircraft carrier with aircraft lifts.

George Alexander

The 15th. March 1918 was not a good one for George Alexander, English actor and stage producer, because he died on that day.

George, who was born in 1858, is best known for his collaborations with St James's Theatre and playwright Oscar Wilde, including the premier of The Importance of Being Earnest.

George was knighted for his services to the theatre in 1911.

20190323_3692_7D2-27 Chalk Message #3

It is nearly eight days since the horrific mosque shootings in Christchurch and it has been a difficult week. 50 people died in two locations in the city.

Photography has not been a major focus, and if it wasn't for the fact that I am into my fourth year of a "photo a day" project I would have put the camera away for a few days.

We took our grandson Ethan to his children's cricket game this morning at his home ground of Edgar McIntosh Park, and beside the field were a lot of chalk drawn messages, all on the footpath apart from a couple on the rear wall of the Papanui Bowling Club building, and presumably from school children sometime during the week.

Message to Michael as written..

"Dear Michael,

The day you left the world stoped spinning. A year has gone by and their hasn't been a day that we haven't missed you or that ??? we haven't thought about you. I hope your happy in heaven and that you have continue dancing and singing!"

You get the over message, I thought it was sweet. There were many messages all over stone/rock walls.

Philosophie der ringenden Menschlichkeit

Gehe gelassen in der Hetze,

denn selten erwartet dich mehr als Lärm.

Meide laute und aufdringliche Menschen,

denn sie sind eine Qual in dein Innerstes…

Denke daran,

welcher Frieden im Schweigen wohnt.

Höre anderen zu,

sogar dem Törichten und Unwissenden,

wenn er/sie in Not ist;

denn an ihm/ihr offenbart sich

die Tragik und das Geheimnis

auch deines Lebens.

Versuche soweit wie möglich

die Menschen zu verstehen

und mit denen, die es verdienen,

ohne Preisgabe deines Ich

Freue dich,

wenn von dir errungenes Maß

in dein Leben wirkt.

Erfülle dich in deiner Aufgabe,

da sie im Leben außer Freundschaft

der einzige Besitz ist.

Bleib dir treu; heuchle niemals Zuneigung.

Sprich nie gering über die Liebe,

denn sie zählt zu dem wenigen,

was dem Leben

unvergessliche Erinnerung schenkt…

Lass jede Lebensanschauung,

jede einzelne Meinung gelten,

sofern sie der andere lebt,

und niemand durch sie Schaden nimmt.

Alle Ängste entstehen im Selbstzweifel,

in der Erschöpfung

und in der Einsamkeit;

darum gönne deinem Geist und Körper

auch Ruhe und Entspannung.

Erhole dich auf einsamen Spaziergängen

und kehre zurück in deiner Seele…

Du bist ein Geschöpf des Universums,

nicht weniger und nicht mehr

als die Bäume und die Sterne am Himmel;

Every July, thousands of Bostonians gather at the Forest Hills Cemetery for a moving remembrance ceremony inspired by Buddhist rituals. Participants decorate lanterns with calligraphy or personal messages for departed friends and family and then, at sunset, light and launch them into Lake Hibiscus.

This ceremony is based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival -- when a door is thought to open to the world of the ancestors, allowing the living to send messages to the other side.

Some of the messages and tributes, when observed closely, are truly heartbreaking.

All the secret scrawling in the dirt at the point.

Within a day of the bombing, flowers and signs began accumulating at the police barricades along the edges of the secured crime scene. Gradually, the barricades at the intersection of Boylston and Berkeley Streets turned into a full-fledged memorial. Volunteers stepped in to organize and care for the objects being left there. On April 18, Greg Zanis from Aurora, Illinois, contributed three large crosses with the names of Krystle Campbell, Lu Lingzi, and Martin Richard, these became the memorial's centerpiece. Kevin Brown from Brockton, Massachusetts, later made a fourth cross for Sean Collier.

On April 23, the day before Boylston Street reopened to the public, city workers moved the increasing number of posters, flowers, stuffed animals, t-shirts, hats, and shoes to a designated area at Copley Square. There the memorial continued to grow, and runners tied hundreds of pairs of shoes to the barricades that enclosed it on three sides. Several large message boards provided a place for everyone to write their thoughts and feelings.

In late April, Mayor Thomas M. Menino instructed the Boston City Archives to assume responsibility fr the long-term preservation of the objects from the memorial. City workers removed most of the paper items on May 7, before a heavy rain. A month later, the Mayor's Office made a decision to dismantle the temporary memorial. City Archives staff, with help from local preservation professionals and other city workers, boxed up thousands of objects on June 25.

Since then, several organizations have donated their time and resources to assist in preserving this collection. Polygon, a company specializing in water damage recovery, helped dismantle the memorial and then carefully dried the objects. Historic New England then treated the objects in its carbon dioxide chamber to eliminate any pests. And records management company Iron Mountain is currently imaging and housing the bulk of the collection at one of its storage facilities. Because of these collaborative efforts, the objects seen here - and many more - will be preserved in the City Archives collection as reminders of the love and support that this tragedy evoked.

We Stand With Boston

From across the Charles River and across the world, the sings and t-shirts flooded in: We Stand with Boston. In a show of solidarity, people from near and far left words of support, and they did so by naming their own homes. These messages - and the fellowship they impart - suggest that we are more united by our common human compassion than we are divided by out nationalities, sports rivalries, or other allegiances to place.

It was the message taped on the front door that first attracted my attention:

"NO Flyers

(or I will run you down with my bike)."

I enjoyed the sense of humor behind the threat.

I took the photo.

I'm still amused.

During the drive home, a heart shaped cloud!
