Shimla is full of barbets. Spring, flowering of rhodendrons and availability of soap nuts attracts these beautiful birds in good numbers. Spent almost 45 min in the morning observing a Great Barbet and a Blue Throated Barbet on a soap nut tree.

A very far shot and heavy cropping, a record shot as I hardly see this barbet, somehow
The White-cheeked Barbet or Small Green Barbet (Megalaima viridis) is a species of barbet found in southern India. It is very similar to the more widespread Brown-headed Barbet (or Large Green Barbet) (Megalaima zeylanica) but this species has a distinctive supercilium and a broad white cheek stripe below the eye and is endemic to the forest areas of the Western Ghats and adjoining hills. The Brown-headed Barbet has an orange eye-ring but the calls are very similar and the two species occur together in some of the drier forests to the east of the Western Ghats. Like all other Asian barbets they are mainly frugivorous although they may sometimes eat insects and they use their bills to excavate nest cavities in trees.

Barbets are relatives of woodpeckers. They have a big head relative to the body. There are bristles around the beak, which give them the name 'barbet'. Most species are brightly-coloured and arboreal. There are 89 species of barbets: 30 Asian barbets, 42 African barbets, 15 American barbets and 2 toucan-barbets. Barbets are non-migratory.
3 species can be found in Singapore. The commonest and smallest is the Coppersmith Barbet, which prefers open areas. The Lineated Barbet is introduced and uncommon but is doing well. The Red-crowned Barbet is an uncommon forest bird. Being colourful birds, sometimes escapees can be seen. E.g., an African barbet, the Red-and-yellow Barbet, was spotted at Bidadari.
One of the totally unexpected arrivals at Sattal was this Great Barbet. We've been looking for it and hearing its call for a long long time but never could spot one. And when it flew in and sat looking away, we were all berserk, clicking away. And it decided to come nearer and pose straight up - Nobody was talking. And when it flew even closer and sat right up above our heads, we couldn't even see it...

The Blue-throated Barbet (Megalaima asiatica) is an Asian barbet, seen across the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a world-wide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills; this species eats fruits and insects.
