The Green-eared Barbet (Megalaima faiostricta) is an Asian barbet. Barbets are a group of near passerine birds with a worldwide tropical distribution. They get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.

It is a resident breeder in southern China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. It nests in a tree hole.

This barbet is 24.5–27 cm in length. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail. The adult has a white-streaked brown head and breast, green ear coverts, mainly dark bill, and green-streaked yellow belly. The rest of the plumage is green. Both sexes and immature birds are similar. This species resembles Lineated Barbet, but is smaller, has the distinctive green ear patch, a darker bill and a dark, rather than yellow, eye-ring.

學名:Megalaima oorti

英名: Muller's Barbet (Black-browed Barbet)

Family: Capitonidae (鬚鴷科), Length: 20~23 cm.

The Black-browed Barbet or Müller's Barbet (Megalaima oorti) is a bird belonging to the Asian barbet family, Megalaimidae. It is 20-23.5 cm long. The plumage is mostly green apart from the head which is patterned with blue, yellow and red. There is a black stripe above the eye. The bill is black and the feet are grey-green. The Chinese name for the bird, "five-colored bird" (五色鳥) refers to the five colors seen on its plumage. Because of its colorful plumage and that its call resembles that of a percussion instrument known as a wooden fish, the species is also referred to as the "spotted monk of the forest" in Taiwan. It is sometimes treated as a separate species, the Indochinese Barbet. It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests. It forages in the upper and middle levels of the canopy. It excavates a nest hole in a tree but little else is known about its breeding habits.

The Blue-throated Barbets (Megalaima asiatica) have a wide range and are common from Northeast Pakistan and Nepal, Southwest China, Thailand, central Laos, north Annam and Vietnam. They are widespread residents in the hills of Himalayas.

They frequent montane evergreen forest and deciduous forests, gardens, orchards, teak forests and cities with fruiting trees.

They are between 9 - 11 inches (23 - 28 cm) long, including tail; and weigh between 2.7 - 3.6 oz (78 - 103 g).

Males and females look alike. Young birds have an overall duller plumage.

They are typically seen foraging in the forest canopy, but will visit lower shrubs to feed.

Their staple diet consists of fruits (particularly figs), some flowers, figs and insects, such as grubs, crickets, mantises, ants, cicadas, dragonflies, locusts, beetles and moths.

Their breeding season usually starts in March and goes on until July. Courtship behavior consists of mutual feeding, and paired birds will ‘duet’ and display.

Both parents usually excavate a nest hole about 1.5 m to more than 8 m above the ground, often on the underside of a dead branch. They line their nest with grasses, wool or plant materials.

The average clutch consists of 2 to 5 white, oval, slightly glossed and thin-shelled eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about 14 days. Both parents also share in raising the chicks once they have hatched. The young are believed to fledge when they are about 30 to 40 days old.

Coppersmith Barbet (Megalaima haemacephala)

Clicked from the rear balcony. I had come to investigate the racket being made by the Rufous Treepie when I found this fellow. Barbets are often seen foraging along with other bird species like the Treepie or Bulbuls or Sunbirds.

White-cheeked Barbets are arboreal birds that keep to fruiting trees. A strong flyer that eats mostly fruits, but is also found having nectar, or eating insects or small reptiles. Noisy birds especially in the summer. They have a rather big head in proportion to their body and use their powerful beak to tear into fruit.
