J. Michael Flanigan was the antiques appraiser. He mentioned that the reverse side of the hunting horn was covered in numerous Masonic markings, but he didn't bother to turn the horn over, at least until my recording stopped.
GUEST: It has come down in my family and I know that it actually came into our home when I was about nine years old at the death of my grandmother. And so I'm sure it was part of her estate. And I was told not to play with it, which meant I went and played with it whenever I could and became fascinated by all of the carvings that are on it. And I know they're Masonic emblems on there; there's a name and a date carved on there.
There are delightful pictures that are meant to, apparently, mimic Noah's Ark. And so I'm fascinated because this looks like a man's life.
J. MICHAEL FLANIGAN - APPRAISER: We know who made it because he says so. Very clearly here it says "R.H. Hurst's horn, cemented with love." Then it says 1826 here. That's very early as decorative arts in the state go. Now, if I turn it up here so that we can look under here, we're just filled with Masonic symbols. The arch, Hiram-- an important figure in Masonry-- the arch again in there. And on another side, even farther around, even more Masonic symbols. So he was clearly a Mason, probably a member of an early lodge. We have Biblical symbols in Noah's Ark. We rotate it round a little more, a ship, animals. And then what I really love, when we get round to this side, is we have a verse. And I think you can tell me a little about the verse.
GUEST: And I know that that is from a verse in the Bible. It says, "And the darkness comprehended it not."
APPRAISER: And it says, of course, also, "Victory and freedom." Tennessee was literally frontier territory, and they were not just worried about fighting Indians at that time; there was always a threat the British were going to come back, and certainly Tennessee, with their experience in the War of 1812, victory and freedom has real meaning in that context. But what's fascinating to me, and what's really important as an object, is we have this date, we have all this family history that ties it to Tennessee. If it were a powder horn, this would be capped and this would have a plug space. And it would have some sort of tie so that you could plug it off. Otherwise, obviously, the powder would pour out. So if it wasn't a powder horn, what was it? Well, I think it was a hunting horn. But what I find just amazing is that we have an enormous amount of high-quality decoration and engraving. All this is carved in here, too. We have the pewter mount. I've consulted with a number of colleagues; no one has seen one this elaborate with the mounting. Now, I know you really want to keep this in the family. It's been in the family as long as you know. So, for insurance purposes, I would insure this, without hesitation, for $10,000, $11,000.

Marking the "cuts" for the suspended floor. All the flooring is suspended above the concrete slab for computer cabling and other services to run under. The air conditioning also runs under the floor with none of the usual ducting... the space under the floor carries the A/C and vents in the floor allow the air to come from there.

Most of us are familiar with the latest AMC no serial and squadron markings edict in 2023.
However, this picture was taken in November 2022 and is wearing an enlarged flag without the usual 'The Rock' and AMC details on the tail, thankfully still with a serial though.

I think the erased Hong Kong markings are a hint that these dolls are from the 80s, as at that time many factories moved to China (as far as I know). Allthough some of the dolls with scratched off markings look very 70s to me.
Ford Motor Company Fund returned as sole sponsor of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau Symposium, marking its 10th year with the title “Moving Forward: The State of the Industry.” The annual event was held Thursday, Feb. 20, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. The event was free to the public.
A portion of Ford’s sponsorship will be directed to support community programs, including a $10,000 grant to Duke Media Foundation.
Last year, the film entertainment industry set a record with box office receipts totaling $11 billion. Black filmmakers, including an increased number of black film directors and actors starring in lead roles, as well as gripping feature films and moving historical pieces all played a role in this unprecedented success.
“Ford is proud to be working again with the NAACP Hollywood Bureau Symposium to showcase a renaissance in black film at all levels,” said Pamela Alexander, director of community development, Ford Motor Company Fund. “We congratulate the award-winning Bill Duke and Duke Media Foundation for their work in developing media and financial literacy programs to prepare inner-city and gifted high school students for the new digital media age.”
The event focused on whether this newfound success was due to a broader industry trend or the achievement of a new stronghold for blacks in the film industry. More than 300 people including Hollywood entertainers, NAACP board members, members of the NAACP Image Awards’ committee and television academy, as well as film and television students from local colleges and universities convened for this event. They also engaged in the question and answer session by directly addressing the panel participants with various inquiries. All panelists encourage aspiring artists to persevere and learn to perfect their craft.
Panel participants included humanitarian/activist/director Bill Duke, CAA agent Cameron Mitchell, senior vice president of production for Columbia Tristar Pictures Devon Franklin, and author and producer Flo McAfee. Ramsey Jay Jr., nationally renowned writer, interviewer and producer, served as panel moderator.
The Hollywood Bureau Symposium was one of several popular events held during Image Awards week. The 45th NAACP Image Awards aired Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 to 11 p.m. on TV One. Check local listings for encore broadcasts.

The official ceremony marking ESA’s handover of the Soyuz launch site to Arianespace took place today, 7 May 2011, at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, after the site was declared ready for the first flight and the completion of a simulated launch campaign.
The ceremony opened with speeches by Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA Director General, Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace, Yannick d’Escatha, President of CNES, and Vladimir Popovkin, Head of Roscosmos. They were followed by Mr Dordain handing over the site’s ‘keys’ to Mr Le Gall.
To mark this occasion and to celebrate the recent 50th anniversary of the first man in space, a commemorative plaque and a stone from the Baikonur launch pad from which Yuri Gagarin took off in 1961 was sealed on the site. This stone symbolises the continuity between the Russian launch site, which saw the start of the space age with Sputnik followed by the first human spaceflight, and the setting up of a Soyuz launch operation in French Guiana.

The markings on the abdomen remind me of a deer's hoof prints...
The webbing of these spiders is essentially in the funnel style, but it looks messy and net-like, even being different in the fact the silk often appears blue to the naked eye.

The text in the upmost roundel reads "made W.Germany"
On one of the tiles is also a vague stamp which refers to a faience-bakkery called "Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven bv".
Thanks to the information of mr. Hans van Dorst of Schoonhoven Keramiek (in The Netherlands) it became clear that the unglazed tile came from the german company Grohn (Steingut AG Bremen) and was finished at Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven. The picture was transfered to the tile by using serigraphy and then the tile was glazed and backed.
Unfortunatly nothing is known anymore about the numbers produced and when this was done. So keep me posted when you know more !

In 1990, this was a raccoon and possum infested handyman special! But I knew it was my home the minute I walked in. Despite my realtor's warning to the contrary, I made an offer, never expecting them to accept it. But they did!
It was mine. And the renovations began as I lived in each room to get a feel for its energy and light! As I replaced all of the jalousie windows. As I built and stocked the Koi Pond and brought new life to drought-decimated grounds.
Today our Jungle is filled with birds and butterflies. Lush tropical plants grow everywhere. The banana jungle is fruiting. The Koi pond is brimming over with lively fish. The waterfall resonates musically throughout the house. There are many places to sit and eat or to just mediate on the beauties of Nature.

Explored the old American Adventure Theme Park mostly demolished now.
The themepark opened in 1987 and was funded by Granada Media, with the inclusion of none themed rollercoasters.
Soon after 1997 American Adventure was sold to Ventureworld headed by former Alton Towers developer John Broome, this did not last long as the park was then sold to THG Group.
Around the year 2005/06 the themepark started selling its previous rides to other themeparks and staff cuts continue until the park was no longer able to run and was closed at the end of 2006.
