Never not hike-a-biking… 😅
Learnings of the TCR:
# 1 - Embrace the walk!
This one might be not so much of a learning but a reinforcement of that topic. In former years I prided myself for never dismounting. But I also didn’t need to. Even with more classical gearing than I ran this year.
I was younger but so were the bikepacking events. Meaning road based races hadn’t arrived then at ridiculous parcours which seemingly have to get more „adventurous“ every year to justify a certain prestige. Sure - especially the TCR always had interesting bits and pieces and the title „evil genius“ for Mike Hall doesn’t come out of thin air. And we love it for that. But e.g. I rode the whole, brutally steep Karkonosze Pass without dismounting up to CP3 of TCRNo6. Quite the achievement and fun. Sure, CP4 in the same race then definitely was time to walk, also for me. At least up and the second half. But that was no real biggy.
I really and fully got introduced what hike-a-bike means by none other than Nelson Trees via his inaugural Atlas Mountain Race. Boy did we walk there… 🙈😅. Not only that but also hoisting ourselves and our bikes over broken down gaps and ravines in the road. Alone, in the dark.
Since then there were a few more opportunities to hone my hike-a-bike skills.
And now, in the just finished TCRNo8 I had ample of opportunities to walk my bike and I embraced it. It boils down to constant forward progress!
I pushed my bike were it was expected to be pushed, like in this deliberately chosen gras track over this hill in the CP4 Parcours (of course there was a route section around it and of course there were enough parts of the 44 km long parcours we had to get off our bikes anyways) as you see in the photo.
I lead my bike over countless gullies in the CP4 Parcours to negotiate them safely.
There was a part in the climb out of Mostar were it was just so hot and so sun exposed I opted to walk for quite a bit and ate previously bought plums while doing so instead of just sitting or even lying in the shade for a bit (which is also good thing to do at the right times and I will cover this in another learning).
And finally there were many short stretches (often over gravelly bits later in the race but also on some very steep sections along the CP1 Parcours towards Litomerice) were sure, I could have taken it as technical challenge to master it even with a loaded bike but why bother and risk it and also outspent myself in the process? Rather I hopped fluently off the bike and soon as possible fluently also on it again.
This all despite the fact that I had 33 x 36 as a really nice lowest gear available. At times it’s so hot, you are so spend, the gradient so steep and/or the surface loose or you just can’t bother and need a change of activity and rather than pause, walk.
Constant forward progress.

She has fixed brown glass eyes, a worn dark brown human-hair wig and a rivet-jointed leather body with porcelain lower arms and cloth lower legs. One of her porcelain arms may be a replacement, and her right lower leg has been mended with soft kid leather, making it a little shorter than the left. The tip of her nose is cracked. She is wearing vintage or antique white cotton combinations and a new petticoat, dress and stockings made from antique materials.

The toy sewing machine (possibly 1920s) is marked "foreign" and was probably made in Germany. The decorative cardboard box containing antique lace is an antique soap box.

What a lovely pass is the Passo Valles. It leads through the Parco Naturale Paneveggio and in the forest a nice little mountain brooklet runs beside it.

Im ersten Quartal 2008 wurde durch die Brauerei Dinkelacker-Schwaben-Bräu
die Marke Wulle
wieder eingeführt.
Das Foto wurde mit dem Photosniper der russischen Marke Zenit aufgenommen. Dieses Monstrum wird auch „Fotowaffe“ genannt und kann fast wie ein Gewehr verwendet werden. Mittels eines Drucks auf den Abzug wird ein Bild „geschossen“. So wird auch bei dem schweren 300 mm Objektiv die Verwacklungsgefahr minimiert. Sicherlich ist es eine völlig veraltete und monströse Kamera, die für Kopfschütteln sorgen kann. Dennoch mag ich das Teil. :-) Auf dem Bild, das ich mit dem Photosniper aufgenommen habe, sieht man die Spitze eines Hochhauses in Frankfurt.
The photo was shot with the Photosniper by Zenit. It´s a very strange camera from Russia. It has 300 mm lenses and can be used without a tripod. Of course it is a very heavy and old fashioned camera. Nevertheless I really like this “beast”. :-) The photo taken with the Photosniper shows a skyscraper in the city of Frankfurt.

Der A112 ist ein Kleinwagen, den der Fiat-Konzern unter der Marke Autobianchi am 2. Oktober 1969 in Italien und auf dem deutschen Markt im Frühjahr 1970 einführte. In der 17-jährigen Bauzeit entstanden sieben Serien, die sich hauptsächlich in der Form der Anbauteile (Kühlergrill, Rückleuchten, Inneneinrichtung) unterscheiden.
Das Fahrzeug wird von einem Ottomotor mit vier Zylindern, 903 cm³ oder 965 cm³ und 31 kW (39 PS) bis 35 kW (48 PS) angetrieben.
Der Hubraum wurde für die stärkeren Abarth-Modelle auf bis zu 1049 cm³ vergrößert, die stärkste Version leistete 51 kW (70 PS).

Meine neueste Errungenschaft ist das Modell im Vordergrund.
Die dahinterliegende Seiko ist schon älter.
Es gibt eine kleine Geschichte dazu (wie meistens bei meinen Käufen).
Vor geraumer Zeit stach mir eine extravagante Seiko beim Internetsurfen ins Auge.
Im Grunde ist sie ein typischer Alarmchronograph der Marke, den es in den verschiedensten Gehäusen gibt. Was ich auch versuchte, kurz vor dem Ende der Bestellprozedur hieß es stets, nach Deutschland nicht lieferbar. Mir gefiel aber diese Flechtoptik des Armbandes, das Gehäuse erinnerte mich an die 1990er Jahre, wo diese Form bei TagHeuer und Ebel vorkam. .
Neben meinem Bicolor gibt es sie noch in Edelstahl und Gunmetal bzw. Schwarz.
Nun gelang mir endlich eine erfolgreiche Bestellung. Das gute Stück kam aus Ohio.
Einfuhrformalitäten erledigte DPD, ich bekam den Endpreis inklusive dieser Einfuhrabgaben berechnet, so dass mir der Weg zum Zoll erspart blieb.
Der Stückpreis änderte sich immer wieder bei den Seitenbesuchen, und kurz nach meinem Kauf stieg er gleich um fast 100 €. Warten lohnt also.
Die Gehäuseabmessungen sind 43 mm x 12 mm (ohne Krone und Stege). Gewicht ca. 190 g (laut meiner 1-Euro-Küchenwaage aus Plastik.)
Man hat also "ganz schön was am Arm".
Zu den Daten:

Meine Seiko Flightmaster (inzwischen verkauft) flic.kr/p/Vu4NjD war auf 200 mm ausgelegt, da stand es aber explizit auf dem Zifferblatt und sie hatte verschraubte Kronen.
Bei der neuen Uhr ist nur eine Gravur in der Bodenplatte, die auf die Dichtigkeitsklasse hinweist.
Da ich aber ohnehin kein Wassersportler bin, tut das in dem Fall auch nichts zur Sache.
Das war kein Kaufkriterium für mich.

My latest achievement is the model in the foreground.
The Seiko behind it is already older.
There is a little story about it (like most of my purchases).
Some time ago I noticed an extravagant Seiko surfing the internet.
In fact, it is a typical alarm chronograph of the brand, which is available in a variety of cases. What I also tried, just before the end of the order procedure, it was always, not available to Germany. But I liked this braided look of the bracelet, the case reminded me of the 1990s.
In addition to my Bicolor, they are still available in stainless steel and gunmetal or black.
Now I finally managed a successful order. The good piece came from Ohio.
Import formalities done DPD, I got the final price including these import duties calculated, so I was spared the way to customs.
The unit price changed again and again on the page visits, and shortly after my purchase, he rose to almost 100 ¬. So it's worth the wait.
The housing dimensions are 43 mm x 12 mm (without crown and bars). Weight approx. 190 g (according to my 1 Euro kitchen scale made of plastic.)
