I never knew that Adidas put a German slogan on the tongues of their sneakers. I removed the laces that came with the shoes because they were not quite long enough for me to tie and double-knot, and this is what I discovered. How interesting! I know enough German (and enough slogans) to know that this means "adidas - the brand with the 3 stripes."

The name Mercedes as a trademark
The name Mercedes was registered on 23 June 1902 and trademarked on 26 September.
From June 1903, Emil Jellinek obtained permission to call himself "Jellinek-Mercedes". "It’s probably the first time that a father has taken the name of his daughter," commented the successful businessman at the time.
In 1907, Jellinek was appointed Austro-Hungarian Consul General and shortly afterwards Mexican Consul. He retired from the motor vehicle business in 1909 to devote his energies entirely to his duties as head of the Austro-Hungarian Consulate in Monaco. He remained an interested observer of automotive engineering developments until his death on 21 January 1918.

Emil Jellinek had good contacts with the worlds of international finance and the aristocracy and became increasingly active as a businessman. In 1898, he began to promote and sell Daimler automobiles, in particular, within the higher echelons of society. In 1899, DMG supplied Jellinek with ten vehicles; in 1900, he received as many as 29.
Jellinek demanded ever faster and more powerful vehicles from DMG. From 1899, he entered these in race meetings – first and foremost of which was the Nice Week – where he would race under his pseudonym Mercédès - the name of his daughter, ten years old at the time, and a name that was well known in motoring circles. In the early days, the name referred to the team and driver – not to an automotive brand.
At the beginning of April 1900, Jellinek made an agreement with DMG concerning sales of cars and engines and the decision was taken to use the Jellinek’s pseudonym as a product name. In addition, it was agreed that a new engine “bearing the name Daimler-Mercedes” was to be developed. Two weeks later, Jellinek ordered 36 of the vehicles at a total price of 550,000 marks – a sizeable order even by today’s standards: in 2005, this total would have been equivalent to 2.3 million euros. Just a few weeks later, he placed a new order for another 36 vehicles, all with eight-hp engines.

With the comprehensive anniversary exhibition 300 years of VIENNA PORCELAIN MANUFACTURE, the MAK sheds light on the history and significance of Europe's second oldest porcelain manufactory. Founded in May 1718 by awarding an imperial privilege to porcelain production to Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, the Viennese porcelain manufactory set aesthetic standards in the following decades. Around 1,000 objects from the collections of the MAK and from national and international collections offer an impressive overview of Viennese developments in the context of Asian precursors and European competitors.
Since its founding years, the MAK preserves the estate of the imperial led from 1744, 1864 closed Vienna porcelain manufactory and is dedicated to the study of porcelain. With examples from all epochs of production, the estate gives an overview of around 150 years porcelain production in Vienna. The Viennese porcelain production covered a broad ceramic spectrum: from dinner service and vases to clocks, high-quality porcelain sculptures, scenic and floral miniatures, porcelain paintings with relief gold decoration and cobalt blue to large-scale porcelain paintings with floral still lifes.
For major works of the Viennese porcelain manufactory, such as the porcelain room from the Brno Palais Dubsky (c. 1740) or the centerpiece from the Abbey Zwettl (Vienna, 1767/68), the exhibition 300 Years of WIENER PORZELLANMANUFAKTUR provides the latest scientific findings with previously unpublished documents. Both the "Dubsky Room", one of the first rooms with European porcelain, and the centerpiece from Zwettl Abbey are permanently exhibited in the Baroque Rococo Classicism MAK Collection designed by Donald Judd.

Mit der umfassenden Jubiläumsausstellung 300 JAHRE WIENER PORZELLANMANUFAKTUR beleuchtet das MAK die Geschichte und Bedeutung der zweitältesten europäischen Porzellanmanufaktur. Gegründet im Mai 1718 durch Vergabe eines kaiserlichen Privilegiums zur Porzellanerzeugung an Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, setzte die Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur in den folgenden Jahrzehnten ästhetische Maßstäbe. Rund 1 000 Objekte aus den Beständen des MAK sowie aus nationalen wie internationalen Sammlungen bieten einen eindrucksvollen Überblick über Wiener Entwicklungen im Kontext asiatischer Vorläufer und europäischer Konkurrenten.
Seit seinen Gründungsjahren bewahrt das MAK den Nachlass der ab 1744 kaiserlich geführten, 1864 geschlossenen Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur und widmet sich der Erforschung des Porzellans. Mit Beispielen aus allen Epochen der Produktion gibt der Nachlass einen Überblick über rund 150 Jahre Porzellanherstellung in Wien. Die Wiener Porzellanproduktion deckte ein breites keramisches Spektrum ab: von Tafelservice und Vasen über Uhren, qualitätsvolle Porzellanskulpturen, szenische und florale Miniaturen, Porzellanmalereien mit Reliefgolddekor und Kobaltblau bis hin zu großformatigen Porzellanbildern mit Blumenstillleben.
Zu Hauptwerken der Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur, wie dem Porzellanzimmer aus dem Brünner Palais Dubsky (um 1740) oder dem Tafelaufsatz aus dem Stift Zwettl (Wien, 1767/68), liefert die Ausstellung 300 JAHRE WIENER PORZELLANMANUFAKTUR mit bis dato unveröffentlichten Dokumenten neueste wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse. Sowohl das „Dubsky-Zimmer“, eine der ersten Zimmerausstattungen mit europäischem Porzellan, als auch der Tafelaufsatz aus dem Stift Zwettl sind permanent in der von Donald Judd gestalteten MAK-Schausammlung Barock Rokoko Klassizismus ausgestellt.

Lagonda is a British car manufacturer, founded as a company in 1906 in Staines, Middlesex by the American Wilbur Gunn (1859-1920). He named the company after a river near the town of his birth Springfield, Ohio. The company was purchased and integrated into Aston Martin in 1947.
Wilbur Gunn had originally built motorcycles on a small scale in the garden of his house in Staines with reasonable success including a win on the 1905 London—Edinburgh trial. In 1907 he launched his first car, the 20-hp, 6-cylinder Torpedo, which he used to win the Moscow—St. Petersburg trial of 1910. This success produced a healthy order for exports to Russia which continued until 1914. In the pre-war period Lagonda also made an advanced small car, the 11.1 with a four-cylinder 1000 cc engine, which featured an anti-roll bar and a rivetted monocoque body and the first ever fly-off handbrake.
During World War I Lagonda made artillery shells.
After the end of the war the 11.1 continued with a larger 1400-cc engine and standard electric lighting as the 11.9 until 1923 and the updated 12 until 1926. Following Wilbur Gunn's death in 1920, three existing directors headed by Colin Parbury took charge. The first of the company's sports models was launched in 1925 as the 14/60 with a twin-cam 1954-cc 4-cylinder engine and hemispherical combustion chambers. The car was designed by Arthur Davidson who had come from Lea-Francis. A higher output engine came in 1927 with the 2-litre Speed Model which could be had supercharged in 1930. A lengthened chassis version, the 16/65, with 6-cylinder 2.4-litre engine, was available from 1926 to 1930. The final car of the 1920s was the 3-litre using a 2931-cc 6-cylinder engine. This continued until 1933 when the engine grew to 3181 cc and was also available with a complex 8-speed Maybach transmission as the Selector Special.
A new model for 1933 was the 16-80 using a 2-litre Crossley engine with pre-selector gearbox from 1934. A new small car, the Rapier came along in 1934 with 1104-cc engine and pre-selector gearbox. This lasted until 1935 but more were made until 1938 by a separate company, Rapier Cars of Hammersmith, London. At the other extreme was the near 100-mph, 4.5-litre M45 with Meadows 6-cylinder 4467-cc engine. An out and out sporting version the M45R Rapide, with tuned M45 engine and a shorter chassis led to a Le Mans victory in 1935. Also in 1935 the 3-litre grew to a 3.5-litre.
All was not well financially and the receiver was called in 1935 but the company was bought by Alan Good, who just outbid Rolls-Royce. He also persuaded W. O. Bentley to leave Rolls-Royce and join Lagonda as designer. The 4.5-litre range now became the LG45 with lower but heavier bodies and also available in LG45R Rapide form. The LG45 came in 3 versions known as Sanction 1,2 and 3 each with more Bentley touches to the engine. In 1938 the LG6 with independent front suspension by torsion bar and hydraulic brakes came in.

Firmengründer war der frühere Opernsänger Wilbur Gunn († 1920), ein US-Amerikaner schottischer Abstammung, der um 1900 nach England auswanderte und zunächst am Bau von Dampfschiffen mitarbeitete. Danach begann er in Staines, Middlesex, Motorräder zu bauen, denen er den indianischen Namen eines kleinen Flusses nahe seiner Heimatstadt Ohio – Lagonda – gab. Damit folgte er dem Beispiel anderer Amerikaner, die den Namen von Häuptlingen oder Indianerstämmen wie z. B. Pontiac als Markennamen für ihre Fahrzeuge wählten.
Außer den Motorrädern entwickelte Gunn bereits Ende 1904 zusammen mit A. H. Cranmer ein Dreirad mit Zweizylindermotor, eine sogenannte Voiturette, die er ebenfalls als Lagonda mit Erfolg verkaufte, sodass der Name beibehalten wurde.
Drei Jahre danach brachte Gunn die ersten vierrädrigen Autos mit Vier- und Sechszylindermotoren heraus.

A German Erdal-Kwak collector's card depicting an assault on a British position.
Erdal produced "Red Frog Brand" (Marke Rotfrosch) shoe and leather polish, while Kwak was a maker of floor wax (Bohnerwachs). Together they put out a series of Great War cards in the late twenties.
The infantrymen are quite accurately portrayed, while the flamethrower squad is more impressionistic.
Since the Treaty of Versailes had banned German flamethrowers in 1920, the card artist may not have had access to the weapon and therefore fudged its appearance.

43000 Crimes: The Collaboration Conspiracy (Postponed)
An exhibition created by Andy Howell in collaboration with some of the most influential artists in the world across the genres of art, music, film, and fashion, has been postponed.
Previously scheduled for August through September of 2009, the launch of the exhibition has been postponed due to financial difficulties faced by the first participating institution. The development of the complete exhibition experience and its modular exhibits continues while we interview other possible domestic and/or international venues for the launch and subsequent exhibitions.

Far more than an exhibition of art – it is simultaneously an intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical event series that will envelope everyone who experiences it. It is a confluence of sight, sound and participation for a generation fused by creative diversity. An artistic collaboration whose explosiveness is an anthem of freestyle expression, which resonates through a cultural cross-pollenation of action-oriented creatives, fine artists, and new media enthusiasts. 43,000 Crimes:The Collaboration Conspiracy is immersive experience into the most current creative inspiration influencing popular culture.
43,000 Crimes is a snapshot of the ever-evolving world of dynamic expression, which discards the notion of genre and medium as a means of definition, redefining itself with each new piece of work. Howell describes it as “neo-contemporary, a visual combination of new culture, method, and technology with no regard for rules or boundary of expression,” and cites Andy Warhol—who blurred the line between the fine art and commercial worlds— as an early inspiration.
The exhibition mocks the fact that skateboarding, hip hop, and original street art were once considered crimes, like so many revolutions in thought and culture before them. Hip Hop artists have pushed the boundaries by creating new genres of music; visual artists and designers have brought a new ruling aesthetic to the world’s communications outlets; and skateboarders have influenced sibling action sports to a new level of sickness. The result is a world where the techniques of this neo-contemporary art movement are taught in high schools and art colleges worldwide, where skateboarding has overtaken staple intramural sports like baseball and football as the activity of choice for youth, where a skater jumps out of a flying helicopter and over the great wall of China, and where Hip Hop music has influenced every genre from punk rock to country and become the most prominent popular music in the world.

I'm neither a typical collector of stamps, nor a stamp dealer. I'm only a stamp photograph. I'm fascinated of the fine close-up structures which are hidden in this small stamp-pictures. Please don't ask of the worth of these stamps - the most ones have a worth of a few cents or still less.

Well I hadn't decided yet which subject I would take for this week's theme purple/pink. But this weekend the subject just became clear!
We went with a Christian youth group to Kamp de Marke in Drenthe for a wonderful time together and everyone had great fun with those silly toilets; four toilets with all another color and theme!
