Manet summered at Gennevilliers in 1874, often spending time with Monet and Renoir across the Seine at Argenteuil, where „Boating“ was painted. Beyond adopting the lighter touch and palette of his younger Impressionist colleagues, Manet exploits the broad planes of color and strong diagonals of Japanese prints to give inimitable form to this scene of outdoor leisure. Rodolphe Leenhoff, the artist’s brother-in-law, is thought to have posed for the sailor bEdouard Manetut the identity of the woman is uncertain.

My photographer friend Tiffany and I were assigned a project in class to recreate a famous painting in history and recreate it photographically but recontexualize it for today. We chose Manet's painting 'Olympia' which is an impressionist piece that currently hangs in Musee D'Orsay in Paris France.
It was a lot of work, planning and creativity but in the end, Tiff and I created something that we're both proud of. This set took a long time to set up and our models were fantastic. Probably the most fun photo shoot I've ever been a part of!

Conclusion

Edouard Manet, The Railway, 1873, oil on canvas, 93.3 x 111.5 cm (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)
French impressionist Edouard Manet's (1832-1883) painting, 'At the Milliner's' depicts a copper-haired woman trying on hats in front of a floral wallpaper background. She holds a dark green hat; to the left is a straw hat with feather trim and red silk ribbons. The woman is probably in a millinery shop, as the title indicates, but her state of undress, with bare shoulder visible, may indicate that the shop is in her home. Manet is known to have visited the store of the milliner Madame Virot and was "enthralled" by her hats. It is possible that the headwear depicted in this painting belonged to Virot.
The second half of the 19th century was the heyday of the millinery trade in Paris. The industry was dominated by women, at its peak employing thousands in small, independent millinery shops throughout Paris. These shops were often times run by enterprising women, some of whom were also designers, who each could employ dozens of young women and girls. One of the most renowned and celebrated milliners during this time was Madame Virot. More so than any other modiste, or milliner, this woman shaped the Paris millinery trade and influenced hat fashions throughout the world for years to come.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters. Édouard Manet, Paris 1832 - 1883
L'éxecution de l'Empereur Maximilien - Die Erschießung Kaiser Maximilians von Mexiko - The execution of Emperor Maximilian (1868 - 69)
Kunsthalle Mannheim

Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus, 1868.
This portrait of Mlle Claus is closely connected with one of Manet's greatest masterpieces, 'The Balcony', exhibited in Paris in 1869 and now in the Musee d'Orsay. The composition is heavily indebted to Goya's 'Majas on the Balcony' which Manet would have known from an illustration in a book on Goya published in 1867.
Fanny Claus (1846-1877) the seated figure in this painting was a concert violinist and a friend of Suzanne Leenhof, Manet's wife. The figure sketchily indicated on the right is Berthe Morisot who was an accomplished artist and later married Manet's brother Eugene.
At an early stage Manet set aside the sketch and began work on the second canvas. The sketch remained in Manet's studio and was bought at Manet's sale in 1884 by the American portrait painter John Singer Sargent, whose own work was much influenced by Manet's.

Painting called The Bench, painted in 1881 by Edouard Manet. This painting is set in Versailles. Sent by Postcrosser in Turkey.
Manet has painted a very crowded scene in the woods of the Jardin des Tuileries. He included several of his friends and family members among the crowd: his brother Eugène Manet, composer Jacques Offenbach and his wife, painter Fantin-Latour, poet Charles Baudelaire, among others . . . including himself.
