Bicycle belonging to Nicol Lawrie (1890-1971) who worked for the postal service after WW2 in Tumby Bay, operating the town's first mail service. Original leather mail bag dating from 1948 is on the front of the bike.
One mail carrier reckoned that her daily route involved the number of steps equating to 14 1/2 miles in rain or sleet or even snow. With the use of mail for delivering medicines and social security checks, there is a lot more at stake than junk mail, greeting cards, and bills even in 2020 when there are electronic forms of crediting and debiting one's account and exchanging social greetings.
The definition of "essential worker" during the pandemic is a sliding scale from public safety and life sustenance, including food and medicines to goods and services that allow a person to live in stability: heat (and air-conditioning), light, water, telephone, and (personal or public) transportation, including repair and fuel and licensing. Of course, scaled down to the household level, anyone with income allows the people to survive and so, by that definition, no matter the job title, this person is (functionally) an essential worker - maybe not in the eyes of the aggregate society, but in the eyes of those who depend on that person essential is still essential.

Sunshine is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, lying 11 km west of the CBD, located within the City of Brimbank local government area.
Initially a town just outside Melbourne, today Sunshine is a residential suburb with a mix of period and post-War homes, with a town centre that is an important retail centre in Melbourne's west.
It is also one of Melbourne's principal places of employment outside the CBD with many industrial companies situated in the area, and is an important public transport hub.
Seen somewhere in the U.S. I don't want to be more specific, since the name shows on the box. Some folks really do get into the spirit of the season (the secular spirit, at least)! As I was taking the picture, I got in the way of mail delivery, so I explained that I take photos of mailboxes. I suspect the postal worker thought I was a bit strange. I dropped off a card with my flickr URL at the post office & referred to my mailbox & post office sets, wishing them a Merry Christmas! To all of our postal workers, thanks for your hard work, particularly at this time of year! December 18, 2012.
