De Muide is a district in Ghent that changed from a village into an urban industrial area when the Ghent-Terneuzen canal was dug in the second quarter of the 19th century. It was characterised by an ever-growing port infrastructure and industrial activity.

In the second half of the 20th century, the decline came as the port moved further north.

This downward spiral was reversed as the district was systematically refurbished. Young families and creative people began to find the district attractive again and brought a new élan to it.

Here too, the City of Ghent has ensured that part of the city's industrial heritage is preserved and incorporated into the new environment.

A recent favorite of his because he "spotted" it. Farewell, my dearest.

Much love until we meet again.

Saturday Self Challenge: rocks and stones

Geologists would be amazed to a high degree to find this formation in the wild. Luckily for them, it is not in the wild but in the Netherlands, on a (former) sea dyke. From the Late Middle Ages onwards the granite boulders were transported as ballast to the Netherlands from the regions around the Baltic Sea, as there was much trade. In the Netherlands, the stones were used to line dykes.

From the 19th century onwards, basalt blocks were transported from the Eifel and other regions in Germany to the Netherlands for dike revetment.

Basalt is heavier than granite and it fits together better, protecting the dike body from wave action.

Laying of basalt blocks is no longer done by hand, which is literally a gruelling and backbreaking job. Nowadays, it is done mechanically, moreover, concrete ‘basalt’ blocks are used.

Until 1932, this dike was a sea dike that protected the land behind it from the Zuiderzee (a shallow bay from the Northsea). In 1932, the Afsluitdijk was completed, the Zuiderzee became Lake IJsselmeer. Today, the dike still has a water-retaining function, and also a recreational one as the dike is widely used as a cycling and walking route between Amsterdam and Muiden. It is possible that the current revetment will be replaced during the next major maintenance of the dyke.

Waves are constantly splashing over the rocks leaving bits of water on the reed that gets instantly frozen. Not as big as I have seen a couple of weeks ago, but they are a lot clearer.
