Last night we watched this very informative webinar on Mistletoe and woodland birds.

When you consider one of the first research findings they mention you begin to wonder whether there is some tie with the loss of Mistletoe with some of the birding sites that have had such steep decline in bird populations. Woodlands Park comes to mind. A recent ebird survey commented that the back paddock was an "avian desert". Our last trip there confirmed this description. 100m into the paddock and there wasn't a bird to be seen or heard.

We will certainly be more vigilant in observing the amount of mistletoe in our birding areas.

This is definitely a worthwhile video to watch.

How special to have these tiny birds visiting our garden. They are feeding on a Pepper Tree (Schinus).

"Occurring throughout mainland Australia, Mistletoebirds are often seen restlessly flitting about in the canopy of trees, or flying overhead while uttering a strident tzew. Their preferred food is the berries produced by mistletoe. The seeds within these fruits pass intact through the birds’ digestive system and are excreted in sticky strands that adhere to branches, where they germinate. In this manner, mistletoe is spread from tree to tree, providing extra habitat for the species which rely on it to survive." www.birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/mistletoebird

In many parts of the United States, there has been a very unexpected and sudden blast of wintry weather, which has taken most everyone by surprise. It's as if the season went from cool autum directly to winter. To illustrate, Buffalo, New York is forecast to get over 90 inches (228cm) of snow TONIGHT (Tuesday, November 18, 2014)! Already, they've received 50 inches (127cm). And, in the more Southern climes, temperatures have dropped well below freezing overnight, with some places reporting temperatures that haven't risen above freezing all day. So yeah... it's as if we practically skipped over autumn, and went directly to winter.

Recently, in my travels, I found a nice outcropping of mistletoe on the lower trunk of a tree. I thought it somewhat odd that it was so low, and wanted to share it with you all. Typically, mistletoe is found much higher up in the branches & limbs.

If you're unaware, the legend of mistletoe is, that one holds a sprig of mistletoe over the head of someone and they get a kiss.

I'm doing a challenge on Instagram for December. I'm going to post something I've made that's Christmas related everyday from now until the 25th December. A kind of advent calendar :). If you fancy take a look!

find between roots of a tree. Must be a "leftover" or may be part of the ritual "kissing under a mistletoe" on Christmas?

The male bird was having nothing to do with this photography caper and took one look at us and headed into the undergrowth. The female, however, had work to do in collecting cobwebs so there were glimpses of her every now and then to try and capture.

While Gia waits for a kiss under the mistletoe, she wanted to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas! :)
