Does this thing work?

I know....I know, I hear you moan....Spring is around the corner and here comes Osi, posting yet MORE pictures of snowy landscapes! But...the sim is beautiful! So here we go :-)

flowers of Mistletoe on the ground are easier to get to than those so high in the trees :))

Here's an image from a recent brief visit down the road from home.....

The Mistletoe was out in bloom and attracted this Brown Honeyeater and others.

The flowers are almost as pretty as the birds it attracts - interestingly it is a parasitic plant!

As usual, thanks for any comments, views or favorites!!

Have an awesome day and weekend!!

The tradition of kissing each other started in Great Britain. The original custom was that a berry had to be picked from the sprig of mistletoe before you could kiss the other. When all the berries were gone, no more kisses were allowed. Nowadays we are no longer so difficult about a berry more or less!

On a recent visit to the Quantocks to get the misty conditions, we came across this small orchard. A fallen Apple tree lay beside another apple tree laden with Mistletoe.

Autumn mistletoe with fruits

Atkinsonia ligustrina

Macro Mondays: Superstition

In the 18th-century, a couple would kiss under the mistletoe, and one berry would be plucked with each kiss; once all the berries were gone, the kissing was over.

Doesn't work very well "Down Under" or anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere because it's Summer at Christmas, so flowers not fruit.

You probably haven't seen this Mistletoe: It's a rare plant (a maximum geographic range of less than 100 km). Most Mistletoe are parasites on other plants, however, Atkinsonia ligustrina is terrestrial, and not epiphytic. It is a hemi–parasite on the roots of neighbouring trees and shrubs: it obtains nutrients from them, but its own leaves make chlorophyll.

I've been trying to identify this plant since I saw berries on it in Autumn (March/April). With flowers I've finally worked it out with help from iNaturalist ('though it mostly suggested Persoonia ... which I knew it was not).
