These days have been difficult for my body, and sometimes I feel I am in a never ending war against illness & the unknown.

I look around and all I see is chaos… but I’ll keep dreaming of freedom, to live, play & love without pain, and declare the victory that will end this war.

A Connecticut Story in Pictures

In America now, we are very lucky indeed. We've had three different vaccinations (Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson) available to all people 12 and over for enough time for everyone to be fully vaccinated and yet we're still hovering around 50% for our vaccination rate and now the Delta variant is really causing some breakthrough infections of those already vaccinated and, of course, killing many people who are not vaccinated. In the midst of this, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) decided to apply some sort of bizarre honor system where only people who were unvaccinated would have to be masked indoors, which absolutely doesn't work because the same people who are anti-mask are the same people who are anti-vax. And, for the spaces and places that would enforce the vaccination, there's a whole industry now of fake vaccination cards people can show so they can continue to risk their lives and others.

At the end of the day, the people in my country just don't realize how good they have it and fall prey to spoiled entitlement and/or conspiracy theories. The cognitive dissonance required to still believe Coronavirus is a hoax even after our previous president, (demon Trump) actually contracted it is baffling and completely illogical.

Meanwhile, our leaders continue to fail us, ignoring the new Delta strain's capabilities to be spread easier outdoors easier, to be spread even within a vaccinated population because of a viral load 1000x that of the original strain, and because it only takes a couple of minutes or less vs. 15 minutes of exposure. So while our hospitals are getting filled up here in this country yet again, we're still having stadiums filled to capacity and large music festivals.

Exodus 3:1-5

King James Version

1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Bedgebury National Pinetum at Bedgebury, Kent, in the United Kingdom, is a recreational and conservational arboretum and, with the National Arboretum at Westonbirt, comprises the UK National Arboreta. It was established as the National Conifer Collection in 1925 and is now recognised as the most complete collection of conifers on one site anywhere in the world. The collection has over 10,000 trees growing across 320 acres (1.3 km2), including rare, endangered and historically important specimens. Bedgebury National Pinetum conducts conservation work and is home to some 56 vulnerable or critically endangered species and houses five NCCPG National Plant Collections.

Bedgebury is first mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter in AD 841, the name deriving from the Old English bycgan, meaning "buy", and the Kentish vecge, meaning "to bend or turn", possibly in reference to a stream.

John de Bedgebury is listed as the earliest resident of Bedgebury, in the time of Edward II. In the 15th century Agnes de Bedgebury, sister and heir of John (died 1424) married John Colepeper, whose Colepeper heirs, financed by mining clay-ironstone on the estate, were resident until at the time of the restoration of Charles II, and who created an ornamental park on the Bedgebury estate. Elizabeth I visited in August 1573.

The current house was built in 1688 for Sir James Hayes, a little apart from the old house. The estate later passed to the Stephenson family, who retained it until it was left to a Miss Peach, who sold it in 1789 to John Cartier, Governor of Bengal and High Sheriff of Kent, who improved the plantings and the house.

In the 1840s Viscount William Beresford developed the estate by creating the village of Kilndown and three lodges, one of which – Keepers Lodge, now known as Park House – became the centre of the Pinetum. Beresford initiated the pinetum in the 1850s and his successor, his stepson Alexander Beresford Hope, developed Lady Mildred's Drive to enable visitors in carriages to view the trees. The estate was sold in 1899 to Isaac Lewis, who allowed the collection to fall into neglect, and it was purchased by the Crown Estate in 1918 for its marshy land and drier ridges, as well as its streams, lakes and valleys. In 1919, the house was bought by the Church Education Corporation to operate as a school. The school closed in 2006.

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and the Forestry Commission established the site as The National Pinetum in a joint venture in 1924, as the National Conifer Collection, because air pollution was rendering London unsuitable for growing conifers. A site at the southern end of Bedgebury Park was chosen, centred on Marshall's Lake and a stream-filled valley.

The first plants for the pinetum were raised at Kew Gardens in 1921 and transferred to Bedgebury in 1925 and 1926, alongside Viscount Beresford's existing plantings. Development of the collection was managed by the Kew botanist William Dallimore, a world-renowned expert on conifers.

In 1969 management of the pinetum reverted solely to the Forestry Commission, who extended it in 1977 and created two new lakes. In the Great Storm of 1987 almost a quarter of the trees were brought down. The aim of Bedgebury National Pinetum is "to grow as many species of conifers as the climatic conditions will allow, planted in generic groupings, using geographically associated plantings where possible." (W. Dallimore, 1923)

The pinetum holds 10,000 specimens of conifers and other species that grow in temperate zones, including 7,000 trees, as living gene banks and as a genetic resource for future restoration programmes. It holds 2,300 different species of conifer, specimens of which include the tallest tree in Kent (Abies grandis) and the three tallest Leyland Cypresses in the UK. The plan is for the pinetum to provide a mix of 70% conifers to 30% broadleaves, and to leave 40% of the site open to provide vistas and allow the trees to be appreciated.

Bedgebury National Pinetum is home to six NCCPG National Plant Collections: Yew, Juniper, Thuja, Lawson's Cypress, Leyland Cypress and Cryptomeria japonica. The collection contains 56 species that have been officially declared vulnerable or critically endangered. The scale and quality of Bedgebury National Pinetum's conifer collection have made it an ideal site to take part in the International Conifer Conservation Programme (ICCP), run by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The ICCP aims to promote the conservation of conifers through conservation work, research and education, and work carried out at Bedgebury makes up part of the effort to conserve the genetic diversity of conifers, particularly those from temperate forests.

The Bedgebury Conifer Conservation Project, initiated in 2007, is designed to use redundant forest plots to grow large numbers – up to 500 – of endangered conifers to provide an ex-situ genetic resource. The first plots were planted with Chilean plum yew by Boy Scouts celebrating their centenary in 2007, and future plantings will include samples from Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia.

Bedgebury nursery was the first to germinate Vietnamese golden cypress (Xanthocyparis vietnamensis) and chichibu birch (Betula chichibuensis) seeds in cultivation.

In the midst of the other gods, God holds judgment: How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (Psalm 82)

The Red Lotus

The hardest friendships are those born in the midst of adversity. The Red Lotus clan and the Sakura Clan were once greatest allies that fought countless wars hand in hand in order to fend off other kingdoms from overtaking their territories. Both lands were rich in nature, fresh produce and animal life.

As the legends speak, an enemy clan disguised themselves as the Red Lotus and destroyed one of Sakura's villages. It caused retaliations and despite multiple pleas from the real Red Lotus clan, the Sakura clan closed its gates forever.

The feud continued for thousands of years till only very few knew of the history of both the clans. However, are the Gods and goddesses tired of this long never ending story? Is that the reason why they somehow brought both heirs to the throne to meet?

There is no such thing as a coincidence, they say. She was out on a mission, disguised as a commoner. No one would realize she was actually part of the upper world. He, on the other hand was riding as a soldier, no colors, no announcements of his true linage and no companions. They crossed paths during a rest stop at the same Inn located in between their territories.

There was injustice in view, some travelers were harassing one of the servers. She interjected, demanding it to end, due to her petite frame, she was not taken so seriously. When the brawl started, she was outnumbered despite trained to defend herself. Lucky for her, he walked in just in time and they fought side by side, just like their ancestors before them.

On discussions about each of their missions, they discovered they were of enemy clans. They should have ended each other then but considering they already fought side by side, it was difficult. A secret friendship was in order. They kept in touch through sneaky letters. They met outside their territories. There was so much discussions about the future of their clans. So much hope for a truce and an alliance once again. Only time was in the way.

She packed the best textiles and herbal tea for him to take back to his family. He would always play a tune for her and bring her the red lotuses from his lands as a symbol of hope for the future and betterment of both their people.

To give you a little encouragement in the midst of these horrific fires going on in Australia, meet one of the dogs saving koalas from Australian wildfires - a true story:

abc7.com/5829669/

Thursday, January 9, 2020

As Australian wildfires endanger the lives of thousands of koalas, one dog is stepping up to save her fellow furry friends.

Taylor, a four-year-old English Springer Spaniel, is trained to sniff out koala fur and droppings, said her owner and professional dog trainer Ryan Tate.

To date, Taylor has rescued eight of the country's iconic marsupials from wildfires, which have destroyed more than 2,000 homes, claimed at least 26 human lives and potentially killed thousands of koalas.

Some of these animals were hospitalized, and others were taken to areas deemed safe, Tate said.

Tate and his skillful pup have been traveling along the east coast of Australia for nearly three years. Over her lifetime, Taylor has found more than 50 koalas.

Tate said when the air is still, koalas' scents descend from treetops to the ground, so when Taylor smells an animal, she will sit below a tree and point up.

In more difficult conditions, like the recent fires, she's also trained to find their droppings, and fresh poo is a good indicator that koalas are nearby.

Hello again my flickr friends, I’m stll in the midst of a very hectic schedule/preparing for our move & has very little time to post here. I’m looking forward to returning to flickr in mid October. In the meantime, you can follow my work on my blog.

As Dr. Jane Goodall said: "We are in the midst of 6th great extinticion of plants and animals (...) My reasons for hope? 1. Young People (...). It's our duty to educate young people so that they can make a real difference."

With hope of understanding, peace and love, I wish everyone a good Earth Day.

i'm in the midst of an on-going, early spring clean (yeah...) and came across some old negatives sitting in a box right at the back of a shelf. wanted to take advantage of them and saw the perfect photographic opportunity. the sky was a cloudless blue and the sun was strong. the whole room was lit up and beautifully sun-kissed. i propped the negative on the floor and shot straight into the light.

real life has over taken my flickr life completely. boo-hiss. not good. seriously missing my little camera (and the sound of that shutter....getting withdrawal symptoms) and of course all your streams. will catch up this week end ♥
