From a geological standpoint, Iceland is a very young country, still in the midst of its own creation. Shaped by the forces of nature, the, barren landscapes demonstrate the creativity powers of the four basic elements—earth, air, fire, and water—in a dramatic way. Active volcanoes, bright green valleys, glacier-cut fjords, black sand beaches, and roaring rivers are the most distinctive features of the Icelandic landscape. And although they are very accessible, they still remain virtually untouched by human civilization. In a fast-paced world of sprawling development, Iceland's pure nature and empty expanses stand out as a luxury.

Despite the name, “ice” only covers about 10% of the land, but still represents the largest glaciers left in Europe. It represents a source of pure water and symbolizes the purity of Icelandic

'In the midst of a flat and yellow land, dotted with meteorites and erratic boulders, I saw from a distance the spires of a city rise, slender pinnacles, made in such away that the moon in her journey can rest now on one, now on another, or sway from

the cables of the cranes.'

After viewing a lovely Hydrangea blooming in my August garden,

for some reason I can't get this old English folk song out of my head. I remember the Sammy Turner version from the late 1950's and it's playing on an endless loop in my head.

When I am king, dilly, dilly, you shall be queen ..."

We are in the midst of another arctic outflow and it's been snowing like crazy. This was in the back yard a couple of days ago after 25cm (10") of snow, with the sun shining. Got up this morning, and there is almost that amount all over again and still coming down.

I've been off Flickr for about a week - I have a lot going on. I hope to get to your latest images today :)

In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I am drawn to this peaceful seagull that I saw resting in the harbor of St. Ives, Cornwall when I visited there some years ago.

-The Valley of Unrest- by Edgar Allan Poe (1845)

"Once it smiled a silent dell

Where the people did not dwell;

They had gone unto the wars,

Trusting to the mild-eyed stars,

Nightly, from their azure towers,

To keep watch above the flowers,

In the midst of which all day

The red sun-light lazily lay.

Now each visitor shall confess

The sad valley's restlessness.

Nothing there is motionless --

Nothing save the airs that brood

Over the magic solitude.

Ah, by no wind are stirred those trees

That palpitate like the chill seas

Around the misty Hebrides!

Ah, by no wind those clouds are driven

That rustle through the unquiet Heaven

Uneasily, from morn till even,

Over the violets there that lie

In myriad types of the human eye --

Over the lilies there that wave

And weep above a nameless grave!

They wave: -- from out their fragrant tops

Eternal dews come down in drops.

They weep: -- from off their delicate stems

Perennial tears descend in gems."

Standing in the midst of Teddy-bear Chollas staring into the sunrise is an amazing experience. The cold desert is aglow with warm sunlight, and the cacti appear to be aflame.

Fortunately, although this was taken at the same time wildfires ravaged the northern and central California coastlines, there were no actual fires near Joshua Tree NP.

Our hearts and prayers remain with all of our neighbors to the north who have suffered tremendous losses, during these difficult last couple of weeks.

Awesome Quite Lovely Beach With Very Less People

Seen during a photo walk with IG-ers at a pond (Reinheimer Teich) midst absolute nature. The weather conditions were as optimal as they should be: the warm light of the rising sun, very cold ambient temperatures and as it was warmer than the air, the water was steaming. Out of nowhere this curious swan appeared and patiently he did us a big favor...

This hardy species of the merganser family will winter further north than any of the other members and will stay with us during the winter months as long as the water stays open. They prefer fresh water to salt water.

Alaska to Newfoundland is their breeding territory and they don't seem to have a nesting preference using anything from man-made boxes to nesting cavities to nesting on the ground.

They do tend to be one of the more social waterfowl species and can be found in huge flocks on lakes and do accept other species of diving ducks midst their own numbers.

Lots of open water is an asset to them when they go airborne as they require a running start across the top of the water for a distance. Once in the air they fly a straight line to their destination.

Females like this one make good use of their long body toting their ducklings around after they hatch.

On the lucerne midst flowers in bloom,

Who sings praises to morning?

It is the girl with golden hair,

The beauty with lips of cherry.

For, love, in clear summer sunlight,

Has soared with the lark and sung now.

Your mouth has such colours divine,

My dear, so tempting to kisses.

On grass in bloom, talk to me, please,

Girl with fine curls and long lashes.

For, love, in clear summer sunlight,

Has soared with the lark and sung now

In the midst of eternal turmoil, when you begin to feel the beauty of the light shining through the darkness, you can bow to the eternity of creation. But as you begin to discover the balance of light and dark, your mind will begin to suffer between the good and the bad. Even if the path you walk causes you to be expelled from the magic gardens of heaven, you will keep walking...

Accompanied my son to the Houston Zoo on a sunny Saturday, chockablock with parents with children of all ages learning something important about the diversity of life. That's an important mission for a zoo; preserving species in the midst of the sixth (anthropomorphic) extinction is another. I took my camera. Looking at my photos later I resolved not to photograph captive animals. But the expression on this gorilla's face, which summed up my predicament (and his or her predicament), had to be posted. What's the right thing to do?

Thanks a lot for your visits, comments, faves, invites, etc ... Always very much appreciated !

...that we are in the midst of climate change, we notice from the weather, which is becoming more and more extreme. The conversion is still taking place gradually and is manageable for us. But then tipping points can suddenly appear.

A single tipping point can set off an entire chain reaction - similar to dominoes. If one of them is tilted, this element pushes the earth towards another tipping point...

In the midst of all our chaos and uncertainty, one thing remains the same. Spring is here, and the trees are greening beautifully once again. Here, a coot dives to find food while gulls gently swim on the water. All so peaceful ... this is my food. Food for the soul. I hope you like it too.

I feel immensely privileged to live so close to this beautiful Local Nature Reserve. It was almost deserted when Marnie and I were there.

In the midst of the COVID19 lockdown (2019), the globally acclaimed muralist ROA finished this masterpiece on the façade of the GUM (Ghent University Museum).

This new Science Museum is located in the heart of the city of Ghent, ROA’s place of birth, and an important part of the natural history collections are hidden in the depositories underneath the museum. Therefore, ROA was able to find his source of inspiration literally just a few metres from his artwork.

You see a magnificent pile of skeletons, including that of an elephant, a rhinoceros, a grizzly bear and an okapi.

This work of art, which is spread out over about 290 m2 of museum wall.

ROA is known for his impressive black-and-white wall paintings featuring animals, with or without skin, fur or hair.

He creates vibrant, detailed murals, that bring wildlife back into the heart of the city. With his work he points out the disappearance of the habitat of animals in places where man has settled. He invites us to take a closer look at the natural world we are all a part of.

His work can be seen all over the world and he is counted among the very best contemporary street artists.

I also found a video (by Ranto) of the making of this great mural.

And .ilona. found another video about ROA.

Enjoy ;-))

In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.

And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.
