Dark Matter 2, digital collage (70x100 cm)

March for the Black Teenager Mzee Mohammed who Sadly Died while in Police Custody in Liverpool last week.

Desc:Out of the 40+ applications received, and out of the top 20 who qualified for an interview. Pictured here are those selected to receive a financial scholarship from the Sacramento Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. All of the recipients were scholars who heavily participated in events and activities doing public service in the Sacramento community. I believe the lowest GPA was a 3.6. This is one of my favorite committees; I serve on in our chapter. Seeing these young people keeps me encouraged that our tomorrow has hope of it being bright for generations to come.

This photo depicts "Black Lives Matter in Hawaii" stickers being sold not only to show support for the movement, but also to take action by pledging to donate the profits to a BLM organization. The photo was taken at a nearby cafe (15 minute drive) called "Coffee Talk". It was so encouraging to see local businesses show their support and stance towards the BLM movement. The topic of Black Lives Matter comes up quite frequently in my immediate community, especially since my church has done sermons series and led discussions on racial reconciliation and justice + mercy. However, I do feel as if there could and should be more intimate and transparent conversations. This is not simply a topic that will die down and eventually disintegrate.

People gathered outside the Minnesota Governor's home to speak about Emmett Till and demand justice for black lives taken from them. Emmett Till was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after being accused of offending a white woman in her family's grocery store. This day would have been his 80th birthday.

Two classes of students at the Newhouse School launched a project in April examining housing in the city of Syracuse. The work was inspired by a recent report — Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing — by Central New York Fair Housing (CNYFH), a major nonprofit that works to assure equal opportunity in where we live and how we live. The report indicates much remains to be done to assure equal access in Syracuse, which has been rated the ninth most segregated city in the U.S.

The student project, which continues to be updated, profiles a number of city residents, and also explains in depth how CNYFH and others advocate for housing rights.

The project debuts in timely fashion. April is National Fair Housing Month, which celebrates the passing of the Fair Housing Act. View stories at myhousingmatters.com. The project was administered by Newhouse professors Steve Davis and Emilie Davis in the Department of Newspaper and Online Journalism.

Through a collaboration including Newhouse’s Urban Affairs Reporting class, an Advanced Editing Class and CNY Fair Housing, we put faces on the data from the report to tell real people’s stories — residents directly touched by the identified disparities.
