A westbound Norfolk Southern manifest freight is dwarfed by the massive concrete silos of a grain complex along the former Wabash Railroad in Tolono, Illinois.
At 12pm, about 40 individuals attended a march and rally in downtown Portage, Indiana, a far east suburb in the Chicago metro area. Under the hot noonday sun and for over two hours, attendees braved the heat and humidity to listen to local leaders, citizens, a 15-year old high school student, a Vietnam War veteran, and activists speak about their experiences with what they perceived as racism in the community, the need for understanding and respect, and their commitment to growing the movement with their family, friends, and neighbors. Two individuals who were introduced as of the local Republican party took time to speak candidly and offer their support for "Black Lives Matter". Time was set aside for those attending to introduce themselves to each other and "break the ice". Refreshments and food were provided. Before the march began, attendees participated in a exercise called a "privilege walk" which was designed to bring attention to the ways in which they believed that one's background, ethnicity, and life opportunities have helped shape and either forward or retard their positive advancement in relation to their peers. After a short sidewalk march through the local area surrounding Founder's Square Park, the event ended, another of the many that have been held in the days and weeks after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

As frequent readers of my hat descriptions know, I've got several literary obsessions that pop into my hats sometimes.
One that up until this point has not made it is my absolute love of the work of Alexandre Dumas. At his best, Dumas is brilliant. He absolutely was the creator of the page-turner. Once you start, you just can't stop. And no matter how many you read (and there are lots and lots), you have no idea how they are going to end.
One of my favorites was The Chevalier de Maison Rouge. It's brilliant. It has everything. Buckles are swashed this way and that. People fall in love. Perils are at every corner. Riches and poverty. Did I mention love?
At the center of all of it is a pure-hearted chevalier in disguise. Ok, so I'm a girl and I can't really be a chevalier, and no one really can. But when I put on the hat, with the feathers floating in almost invisible breezes, I can live a piece of my fantasy.
This hat is high style. You've got to dress up to it, but it's not hard to do. The contrast between the colors is strong: butterscotch velour felt, black grosgrain, bronze feathers, black fluff. But these are colors we love together. You've got to know that when you wear this hat, you will be the center of the room. You can do it because everyone who's watching you wishes they were wearing your hat.
The hat is blocked over vintage millinery forms. The brim is slightly asymmetrical: the feather side rides slightly higher than it's partner. With the wire in the brim, you'll eventually form it to your tastes. Or rather in my experience, the hat will eventually form itself to you.
Every stitch is made by hand, as was the feather mount. It was great fun to make, and in the end I discovered that all those happy fluffy Muppets use ostrich fluff to get that movement. (Before I attached it to the hat, I danced around the house making it sing "menahmenah"). But no worry, once I did attach it, it immediately stopped being Muppet-esque.
The hat is lined with golden Thai silk that matches the golden pheasant feathers.

No matter what you think about the Nottingham style it was certainly distinctive. I must admit to not being a huge fan myself, and the bodywork by East Lancs or Northern Counties, as on this Atlantean, was to say the least unusual. Other distinctive features included the single leaf front entrance and double leaf centre exit. The enormous front bumper looked as if it had been removed from the rear, where there usually wasn't one.
Not so long ago Atlanteans were common place in Nottingham, and there were still plenty when I took this photo on 10 October 1996. Since then the Atlanteans and traditional livery have gone, and the tramway also runs in this locality.
This view is selected for DH73 who I hope will enjoy this view from perhaps his favourite era.
No matter what race track Nascar goes to each weekend, you will still see the #3 flag for Nascar great Dale Earnhardt, the father of current Nascar driver Dale Jr.
You will probably see some Rebel Flags too, even if you are at a racetrack that is not in the south. I know I saw some in Kansas....and that is not the South !

Webb may have found evidence for the long-theorized first generation of stars — as well as the most distant active supermassive black hole to date. GN-z11, a galaxy that existed 430 million years after the big bang, is giving up its secrets.
This extremely bright galaxy was discovered by @NASAHubble and is one of the earliest distant galaxies ever observed. Webb found the first clear evidence explaining why it is so luminous: a 2-million-solar-mass central supermassive black hole rapidly gobbling up matter.
Observers using Webb also discovered a pocket of pristine gas in the galaxy’s halo. Theory and models both suggest that clumps of helium like these may collapse to form Population III stars, the first generation of stars in the early universe. These stars have never been observed. They’d be made almost entirely of hydrogen and helium (unlike modern stars, which contain heavier elements) and be massive, bright, and hot. Finding them is one of the most important goals of modern astrophysics.

The box at the far left displays a map of the helium gas in the halo of GN-z11, including a clump that does not appear in the infrared colors shown in the middle panel. In the lower half of the graphic, a spectrum shows the distinct “fingerprint” of helium in the halo. The full spectrum shows no evidence of other elements and so suggests that the helium clump must be fairly pristine, made of hydrogen and helium gas left over from the big bang, without much contamination from heavier elements produced by stars. Theory and simulations in the vicinity of particularly massive galaxies from these epochs predict that there should be pockets of pristine gas surviving in the halo, and these may collapse and form Population III star clusters.

Light always matters in photography. Sometimes we don’t need the most expensive gear to get an amazing image, when opportunity presents itself all you need to do is capture it. Taken on a misty morning on my way to work today.
