In the lush surrounds of Puerto Nariño, Amazonas, I was fortunate to encounter the radiant Masked Crimson Tanager (Ramphocelus nigrogularis), a vision of scarlet amidst the green tapestry of the Amazon. This image was crafted with the intent to not just document, but to accentuate the stark contrast and vivid coloration that nature has so artistically bestowed upon this bird.

Through my lens, the challenge was to isolate the tanager's intense reds against a busy, yet beautifully muted background, without losing the bird to its environment. Strategic use of natural light and composition allowed me to capture the detail and texture of the bird's plumage, highlighting the juxtaposition of its striking mask and the iridescent sheen of its bill. This image is a celebration of life in its most vibrant form and a testament to the rich biodiversity that thrives within Colombia's unique ecosystems.

Masked Lapwing

≠===================≠

Nesting season is over for these birds, so its mostly a token flypast and loud cry effort.

This one had the spurs well on display.

A little tootle to Hartlepool to see this vagrant.

A well behaved bunch of birders all keeping their distance from each other(and the bird).

A new one for me.

Most Sundays, Japanese youth who like to dress up in visual kei, cosplay, gothic lolita, and other over-the-top outfits hang out on the bridge in front of Meiji Jingu Shrine and pose for the numerous photographers and tourists.

Added to the Cream of the Crop as my most fav'd and most viewed photo.

Found on most playing fields and parts these are noisy birds, especially in defence of chicks

Male is iridescent green on breast, head, and back; female is brown. Namesake dark mask is usually obvious, especially on females. Nearly identical to Collared Trogon but very little overlap; Masked is almost always found at higher elevations. Where both are possible, look especially at tail pattern on males: large white tips on underside of tail feathers, otherwise dark with very fine white barring. On females, look for evenly barred undertail with large white tips combined with contrasting black face

Sylvan Heights Bird Park

Scotland Neck, North Carolina USA

Sylvan Heights is home to breeding populations of some of the world’s rarest waterfowl. In some cases, fewer than 250 individuals of these species remain in the wild, and the collaborative captive breeding programs taking place here may be their last barrier against extinction.

Masked Lapwings are found in Australia and New Zealand, the masked lapwing is a relatively large bird mostly found in wetlands as well as on beaches and other coasts; this species is highly adaptable and is usually seen in developed areas as well, They nest on open ground and will jealously guard their territory against any intruders

An odd-looking Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) in Seletar Country Club.

Note: The Masked Lapwing is not a local species, but a native of Australia. In 2005/2006, some Masked Lapwings escaped from the Singapore Zoological Garden and became free ranging within the zoo vicinity. Later, a number of them established a self-sustaining, breeding colony at Seletar Country Club. The Masked Lapwing is now considered a feral species of Singapore.

It'd just finished chowing down a worm, I did get a photo of it while it was pulling out the worm but most of the bird was in the shade and you could barely notice the worm.

Masked Tityra was on my to-see list, and I did see them every morning. But they are quite skulky and like to keep their distance. Even when I was able to observe them unnoticed, they usually stayed hidden in the canopy and never gave me a good photo opportunity.
