Brussels, Galerie Ravenstein

An important pedestrian link between the ville haute and ville basse (uptown and downtown Brussels), the Galerie Ravenstein leads to Gare Centrale. It is incorporated in a huge office building, four storeys high. Its original aim was to give a new boost to the neighbourhood, which was heavily affected by the destructive works for the Nord-Midi (north-south) junction. Designed as a shopping gallery which could house 81 shops, it was built between 1954 and 1958 in the International style, according to plans by the architects Alexis and Philippe Dumont, who designed the nearby building which houses Shell’s offices."

This is one of several pieces of art that I have on the go at the moment and I've decided that it's time to work towards completing this one.

Well, these are strange times and demands on my time and energy mean that I'm not always in the best place for creativity ... so when I do get into the flow, it's about as good as it gets!

This piece still has a way to go ... the mandala shape is to be cut out of the backing board rather than my original plan to make it as a square. More fine detailing will go into decorated areas such as in and around the mirror points in the outer heart shapes and the inner circle.

As all good art often does, this piece has evolved and the process of designing and making it is practically a meditation in itself.

A birthday gift for a friend!!

This mandala is on the wall of the small Interweave studio which is used by members of the local arts community in Inveresk.

A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols (usually in circular form from the Sanskrit मण्डल meaning 'circle'). Carl Jung "hypothesized that the circle drawings reflected the mind's inner state at the moment of creation and were a kind of symbolic archetype in the collective unconscious."

One of the resident monks, Geshe Sangpo, was invited to Elon University to create a mandala. Gelshe Sangpo chose to create the Tara Mandala as she's the bodhisattva of compassion and wisdom. Geshe Sangpo is one of few monks in the U.S. who has been trained in creating mandalas of this type. The basic pattern is on a template, but Geshe Sangpo puts the colors down by memory using specific tools in this practice.

Originally mandalas were created from crushed precious jewels. Later sand was used and colored. Now quartz is crushed, colored and used to make mandalas.

When the mandala is finished, there is a closing ceremony where the pattern is brushed into the center representing impermanence - a teaching in Buddhism - all that exists is impermanent.
