The bottle cap, small bit of fishing gear, and ferrous stone above the pipe came from the Kenosha, Wisconsin marina on the 20th. The pipe and the rest of the stuff below it (very old beer can, metal ring, bottle cap, and big metal thingy with rubber wheel jammed in) were from the pier on the south side of the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, IL.
These little but potent magnets are so easy to make, it can get rather addicting. I made several sets with themes tailored to friends and family's interests and lives. I will be giving these as gifts for the holidays, and am considering making them as wedding favors for my wedding in July.
Many people buy Altoid-style tins to put these little guys in, but I have some other ideas. I don't want to spend the money for the tins, plus my environmentally-conscious self worries that people will just toss the tins out after putting the magnets to use. Whenever I can, I try to recycle objects around me for my projects, rather than buy more stuff and add to over-consumption. Besides, it's more challenging, and often cheaper, to come up with alternative creative ideas! I will be sure to share any (good!) ideas I come up with for wrapping/presenting the magnets.
This set is for a friend who often travels to Japan and is very fond of Japanese culture and art.

Magnet Kitchens' Linton is a design that combines the best of both contemporary and traditional styling, with its classic yet simplistic painted timber finish.
480 magnets. Each 20-magnet pentagon has a 30-magnet pentagonal pyramid mounted on it. This is the standard 50-magnet pentagon unit. Magnet poles are aligned parallel to the perimeter of each pentagon. Adjacent pentagons have poles aligned in the same direction at the edges (as evidenced by square instead of triangular patterns at the edges). Each pentagon is mounted rotated by two magnets, leaving triangular holes at each vertex.

Meadow Blazing Star has often been called the "ultimate Monarch magnet". In May, I happened to find it being sold at a local garden center. It needed to be apart of my native garden, no doubt about it.
Two months later, it's taller than I am and just started blooming two days ago. Today, I found two Monarch Butterflies in my native garden, the first two Monarch Butterflies I've seen in my garden this year.
I love the chaos that occurs when you combine paperclips and magnets ... this is a particularly strong magnet (almost removed my thumb once when I wasn't paying attention) and it's a lot of fun ...

We collect a magnet from every place we go. Magnets are easy to pack and don't cost as much as some souvenirs. Plus they are great conversation starters and great memories. Now that we have filled up the surface of our refrigerator, we have started covering the metal doors on the kitchen cabinets. 3/15/12
