Lower Cascades (in my own backyard) - Here, instead of emphasizing the falls, I have used an HDR/Panoramic technique to emphasize the massive rock walls and sky. In the film days this would have been next to impossible. The most impressive part of the image can't be seen on the web and that is the amazing detail produced by using such a technique.
This scene greets the shivering hiker, and immediately one forgets the cold water torture to get here

Can't tell if this paste up was used for artistic or commercial use. .
Yesterday we set out for Upper Cathedral Lake, but since I get lost easily we ended up at Lower Cathedral Lake…I think. The lake was frozen, the air was cold, the wind was brutal, the elevation was rough, the sunset was amazing (but it was behind me), the hike back was dark. All that said, it’s hard to complain about a place this gorgeous.

Church of the Annunciation, Nazareth, Israel
"The church was established at the site where, according to Roman Catholic tradition, the Annunciation took place. Greek Orthodox tradition holds that this event occurred while Mary was drawing water from a local spring in Nazareth, and the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation was erected at that alternate site.
The current church is a two-story building constructed in 1969 over the site of an earlier Byzantine-era and then Crusader-era church. Inside, the lower level contains the Grotto of the Annunciation, believed by many Christians to be the remains of the original childhood home of Mary. Under Roman Catholic canon law, the church enjoys the status of a minor basilica.[1] A historically significant site, considered sacred within some circles of Christianity, particularly Catholicism, the basilica attracts many Catholic, Anglican, and Eastern Orthodox Christian visitors every year."

The church has a very beautiful and inspired interior and it is known for its mosaics from around the world.

This is the Lower Falls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, on a rainy day. The area is referred to as "Artist Point", but apparently there were some mistakes made in the naming of it, according to this link: www.yellowstonepark.com/artist-point/ . A beautiful location, regardless of the name :)

The two ponds on the property are often a subject of my photo shoots since moving here to western Illinois. One is situated immediately in front of the house whereas this one is down hill from it... so I call it the lower pond. :D This was taken earlier this year before the leaves on the trees began to spring forth.

Shot handheld with a simulated ND. The trunks around it were burned in a wildfire and are blackened.
Another day for waterfalls. Lower Latourell Falls is in the Columbia River Gorge area. These falls are 249 feet. It was a nice quick loop hike up to the Upper Latourell Falls.
Also did the hike to three McDowell Creek waterfalls a couple hours south near Sweet Home, OR.
The wonderful Cotswold village of Lower Slaughter (Slaughter comes from the Anglo-Saxon 'Slough' meaning 'Muddy Place") - where low stone bridges cross the River Eye.

I have always struggled trying to come away with a nice comp of the 25' Lower Falls at Old Mans Cave, especially with it's large splash pool and hardly any foreground. I decided this morning to spend some time hoping to come away with a decent photo before making the spectacular exit from the gorge, climbing up a series of stone and stairs, passing underneath a seasonal waterfall, and then up through a tunnel to the rim.
Thirty foot drop at the lower falls at Cataract, Indiana. A half mile trail connects the two falls. The fishermen were trying their skills. Sunny but cool, perfect for a hike.
Rains the week prior to my arrival had got the waterfalls going again, something rare for this time of year. It's not a torrent, but enough to be pretty...and not get soaked.
Thanks for sticking with me on this full week of Yosemite. I'll start switching things up a bit next week. I've barely started to post any of my local fall color shots, I've got lot's more Yosemite, and heck I've got more from WY. I also gotta explain how I lost my 100mm Macro....(sniffle)...that'll be fun.

Hike to Deadwood Lakes Wednesday July 19 from Chinook Pass, Washington. The lakes are in Mount Rainier National Park but the hike starts outside the park on the Pacific Crest Trail just off of Highway 410 and then cross country or if found an unofficial trail. The trail is easy to find once the ridge top is reached north of Highway 410. Wildflower bloom is at peak and the mosquitoes are tolerable but doing well at the lakes. I didn't attempt to determine distance but total round trip is probably slightly less than 4 miles and elevation gain and loss is probably slightly less than 1000 feet each way making this an easy day hike. However those with no hiking experience and off trail navigation skills should probably avoid this hike. The shoreline of the upper lake is very wet meadow and should be avoided. The north side of the lower lake is dry and easy walking. IMG_1644
