Chinese imperial roof decorations or "crouching beasts" were statuettes placed along the ridge line of official buildings of the Chinese empire.
These are often made of glazed ceramic and form an outward marching procession. Here we see the imperial yellow glaze reserved for the emperor.
At the tail of the procession will be an imperial dragon, representing the authority of the state.
At the head of the procession will be a man riding a Phoenix, one legend suggests that this represents a minion of the emperor who grew greedy for power and was hanged from the roof gable for treason. Another version of this figurine is an immortal riding a fenghuang-bird or qilin. Yet another intrepretation is that this is a person serving the emperor, being watched by the following beasts.
In between will be mythical beasts, usually an odd number of them. The mythical beasts are set to pounce upon the man and devour him should he stray from performing his duties with faithfulness and rectitude.
The maximum number of beasts is nine, including evil-dispelling bull, courageous goat-bull, wind- and storm-summoning fish, mythical lion, auspicious seahorse, heavenly horse, lion, and chiwen (a son of dragon).

October 3, 2009 - A low-angle view of the Heian Shrine's torii gate in Kyoto. Somehow it doesn't look quite as tall as it is from this angle.

As most other ducks and unlike other bird species, Mandarins start their courtship already in autumn. Drakes perform a series of ritualized behaviours in impressing the females, who will choose their favourite mate for the coming season. Repetitive dipping and drinking as shown in this picture is part of a Mandarin's display, among other more or less elaborated postures and gestures.

Helsinki Cathedral (Finnish: Helsingin tuomiokirkko or Suurkirkko, Swedish: Helsingfors domkyrka or Storkyrkan) is an Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki, located in the centre of Helsinki, Finland. The church was originally built as a tribute to the Grand Duke, Nicholas I, the Tsar of Russia and until the independence of Finland in 1917, it was called St. Nicholas' Church.
Helsinki Lutheran Chathedral is a distinct landmark in the scenery of central Helsinki, with a tall green dome surrounded by four smaller domes, the church was built in 1830–1852, in neoclassical style. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, to form the climax of the whole Senate Square laid out by Engel, surrounded by a number of buildings all designed by him. The building has a Greek-cross plan (i.e. a square central mass and four arms of equal length), and is symmetrical in each of the four cardinal directions, each marked by a colonnade and pediment. Engel had intended to place a further row of columns on the west end to mark the main entrance (opposite the altar at the east end), but this was never realised.

View of Khara-Khoto ruins, located in Ejina Banner, Alxa League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China.
Khara-Khoto (Chinese: Heicheng, "black city") has been identified as the city of Etzina, which appears in The Travels of Marco Polo. The present banner Ejin Banner is named after this city.
Khara-Khoto is the largest existent fortress along the ancient Silk Road. It was first built in 1032 and later became a trade center of Tangut Empire (1038 – 1227). The place is named after the Eji Nai City (Black Water City) in Tangut language.
The walled military town was first attacked and taken by Genghis Khan in 1226. The ancient town continued to develop and flourish under Mongol Empire. In Yuan Dynasty (1271 – 1368), the city was expanded.
In 1372, the last general of Yuan Dynasty named Khara Bator was surrounded to the armies of Ming Dynasty ( 1368 1644). After the defeat, the city was abandoned and left in ruins.

St Pauls Cathedral London.
I had a great time shooting the buildings in London, makes a nice change from my usual landscape/seascape's. I was up there for the landscape of the year winners awards. It was nice to be able to put a face to some of my Flickr contacts. I shot this from one of the many bridges crossing the Thames. I used my 70mmx200mm with a two times extender to compress the lights and Cathedral. It is a two shot focused stacked image, one for the lights one for the cathedral.

Two shot stitched pano. Canon 5D111 24x105 f@16 30sec ISO100
I shot this yesterday, about 6.30pm, on the beach at Bedruthan Steps north Cornwall. The light was harsh, and the sky very blue,
So it was a bit of a struggle to get any thing useful. But I quite liked the mono conversion.
The best thing about last night was meeting up with five Flickr contacts. I had a really enjoyable evening talking photography, taking shots on the beach. And having a laugh.
Thanks a lot guys, I really enjoyed the evening.
