Considering these were shot on £1 shop "Mexican Fandango" Kodak 200asa print film, and given a bog basic 99p Tesco Supermarket scan, I'm v. pleased with the results, and especially with the extreme light-weight and compactness of this bit of kit, and the remarkable performance of this ageing diminutive KMZ Industar 50mm, it's lovely bokeh, and amazing close-focussing ability.

I just knew this inexpensive little russian jewel wouldn't let me down.

Not doctored in photoshop; this is the neg scan. I've been experimenting with a polarizing filter. I'm not sure what setting I had it on here but like the results. This is a very low-res scan. It was still afternoon so this would likely have been underexposed (the metering gave too much weight to the sunlight probably). I probably had the polarizer on its "darkest' setting. So I guess I can get this effect by underexposing the surroundings and further darkening it with the filter which flattens that light reflection.

The subject here by the way is the famous Wyndham Arms in Merthyr Tydfil - voted "Britain's Hardest Pub" by the viewers of a notorious Sky Television series - though it's actually an utterly friendly, hospitable and lovely place to have a pint or two in, by Merthyr standards.

East window of St George's Roman Catholic Church, Whitchurch, Shropshire. The central light appears to represent Our Lady of Fatima, appearing to the three Portuguese children below, flanked by St Anthony and St Francis respectively.

This is a sight that evokes memories for me, from attending masses here during childhood visits to my grandparents who lived nearby. My parents were married in this church before this very window in 1958.

This humble early 20th century brick building is unlikely to inspire many to explore further but it does hold a treasure of some significance in it's only stained glass window, behind the altar, the work of one of the foremost 20th century artists in the medium.

Although seemingly unknown and unrecorded in academic circles, this appears to be a forgotten work by noted Irish stained glass artist Evie Hone, who's work is well known at Lanercost Priory (Cumbria), Immaculate Conception RC in Mayfair, and most famous of all the enormous east window of Eton College Chapel. This one, however, appears to have slipped through the net altogether, and been off the radar ever since.

Hone is recognised for her bold use of colour, painterly approach and expressionist style, highly individual and immediately recognisable, thus on remembering seeing these windows in childhood I wondered if there might be a connection. (I'd last seen this window years before starting to study stained glass, but I was still reminded of them every time I saw images of Hone's work elsewhere).

The window was installed in the 1950s, a year or so before my parents were married in front of it, so I asked my mother if she could remember anything about them. She replied that she just recalled them being the work of 'some Irish woman', which was all the confirmation I needed!

These images don't do the glass full justice. I've only been in the church once since childhood whilst I was using slide film, thus these low-res scans will have to do until I can get back to take digital images of this special, lovely glass.

Postcript Dec 2010: Having just read the obituary of Irish stained glass artist Patrick Pollen who died earlier this month it now appears likely that he was the author of this glass, not Hone, although he was hugely influenced by her, having been drawn to the medium by seeing her Eton window. The article mentions "three windows (lights/lancets?) in a chapel in Whitchurch".....!

For some reason this chocolate-chip 1982 cereal from the Cap'n Crunch stable didn't hang around for very long. The premium in the boxes were these sheets of stickers, and there were also maps of Crunchberry Island (which were available in all flavors of Cap'n Crunch cereal). Chockle The Blob, as you can guess, was sort of a Shmoo-like entity that could take the shape of anything. I liked this cereal and it tasted better than Cookie Crisp.

Wikipedia says recently the cereal was brought back but not in its original form... no word on whether Chockle joined it.

Posted for the amusement of Waffle Whiffer and friends. This was a low-res scan done long ago; I took another photo recently.

BONUS: This image was used (without requesting permission or being given a heads-up) on BuzzFeed in a Forgotten Cereal Mascots story. Fine by me, but I hate to be surprised.

First roll of film from my brand new (1949) Zeiss Ikon Nettar 518/16 folder (6x6 Mediumformat) Taken with Reala 100 and Sunny16 rule and of course "guessomatic" for distance. Only minor adjustment of contrast and 50% USM- 0,8pix -0threshold. Camera performed quite well and far above my expectations. This is a low-res scan. I think I have found a new camera to keep in my pocket at all times. The limitations are of course the shutter in bright daylight. The lens is a Novar Anstigmat 4,5/75 mm in a Pronto shutter. I think I will try some Ilford XP2 for lowlight conditions during next week some time. The motiv is a barge/punt ? at a small lake in Volda- Rotsetvatnet.

Not much left at Pielet Bros. Ex- Chessie GP30's, Conrail GP35's, and a couple SP SD9's can be seen. Sorry for the low-res scan.

low-res-scan

After a rescan of the 35mm films on which I shot all my Russia photos, this picture was the only one which came back corrupted. Hence this upload is still the low-res scan from a few years back.

I would have removed the photo, but it's just too funny.

"Manhattan, NY: Carl Schurz Park (Our birds, heavy as bronze)" GJC, 2012.

Rolleiflex, 120-film low-res scan.

One of the reasons I haven't been posting many photos lately (and one of the reasons I don't have a social life) is because I'm in the midst of making a film. Here's a little preview. Don't get too excited, it won't be done until April...

Many thanks to Southen for the tips on location here. It's one thing lugging a DSLR up into abandoned buildings, but bringing 60+ lbs of 16mm camera equipment, lenses, film, huge tripod and tripod head, etc. up 13 floors was quite an experience.

This is a low-res scan of my 16mm film, we use this to review footage and make sure everything looks clean. So far so good, but that's the reason it doesn't look hi-res.

Tried using film (Kodak Portra 400) and am now clear on why I shoot digitally! Of the roll of 36 there were only nine I would show anyone else, and only three that I think are of any merit beyond that level. Cost $29 for 4x6" prints and low res scans. I do not think that the image quality is anything I couldn't do in Lightroom especially using something like VSCO Film. What do you think?

Minolta SRT-MCII f1.4 58mm lens with polarizer. Portra 160 film shot at 160 with no over or under exposure. The low res scans are a little light. The actual prints are a bit darker with deeply saturated colors, excellent skin tones and contrast. Given these shots were taken at around 11 AM on a cloudless summer day I certainly can't complain. Ambient light only, no flash or fill of any kind.
