BCD Mtg - Clearly a very beautiful place to live!
Clearing, insulating and boarding our loft revealed some forgotten puzzles:
Waddington 4000pc - "English Country House" no 104A Timbered with tiled roof brick chimneys (probably late 1980s -1990s) 144 x97cm
Arrow Connoisseur 4000pc - Thatched Cottage and Church Tower - no 5549 (probably late 1980s -1990s) 145x98cm
Arrow Connoisseur 3000pc - Autumn Wooded Riverbank Scene – no 5601 (probably late 1980s -1990s) 118x89cm
Thatched cottages have long been a staple subject for UK jigsaw manufacturers - reflecting the conservative and nostalgic tastes of their target market and the times.
This information about Waddingtons comes from Tom Tyler's book:
Pg19 on Waddingtons, Leeds:
“The largest press is the Sheridan. The Samco, a smaller version is widely used while the older Oyster presses have been replaced by their modern equivalents built by Hawks Technical & Bobst (Fig 13). The Sheridan press is double-sided & its two operators have to work in synchronisation. .. some of the presses in use at Waddingtons in the 1990s were nearly 30 years old.”
Pg 31-2, Pg 42 “By 1939 the Waddington catalogue was listing four types of jigsaw puzzle … third was the Waddington Giant Jigsaw – ‘the most delightful puzzles on the market’. The largest interlocking cardboard jigsaw ever produced, 439 pieces.’ (21x15in)… In 1955/56 Waddington produced their first 1000pc jigsaw
… at the end of the 1960s, Waddington bought larger Sheridan presses … By this date (1987) there were 4,000 – as well as 3,000 and 2,000pc - puzzles in the range. By the end of the 1980s … also of interest were the four wooden laser-cut puzzles, but by 1991 these had been discontinued as Waddington’s felt the quality was unsatisfactory. Waddingtons set up a new factory in 1996 and the cover for that year’s catalogue shows the new 3-D Puzz series… Sadly Waddington’s factory in Leeds closed in 1997 after nearly 100yrs as a family firm…

Loft Town now has it's own football team but sadly as they do not have a ground yet nor any opponents all they can do is train and wait.
Here they have just been presented with a trophy for being the best dressed football team in Loft Town.
