Burghfield Lockdown

2 March 2015

From mid-March for over four months in 2020, we were in lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our only escape was along the country lanes behind our house. Fortunately it was a good spring and there was plenty of flora and fauna about.

25/Jan/2021. Lockdown Walk

At last, a glorious sunny, winter’s day. Very cold, even the slightly salty water at the head of the harbour had frozen, causing a few problems for the young swans. A good day to take today’s Lockdown Walk around the harbour and see what’s about. Nothing too exotic but everything looked good in the sun.

Mid winter so plenty of Brent Geese plus the usual waders: Curlew, Red-Shank and Turnstone around the margins, even a fleeting sighting of a Kingfisher plus a few very common species. So not one Lockdown image today but 15.

This week: Vienna had its epidemic lockdown #4. This time coinciding with the beginning of Christmas holiday season, Advent, we see a peculiar combination of festive emptiness, and crowds of people, where isolation would be imperative. Strange looks…

Johanna Krimmel Lockdown Tagesschau 2021

Lockdown 2020, just me and the spiders.

During lockdown I decided to dig out my camera and take it out with me on some of my daily walks. Lost a lot of motivation over the last few months but finally getting it back, slowly but surely. Lockdown has definitely helped me just get out and shot anything and everything.

In August, we recorded a Lockdown Conversation via Zoom with eight people of different faiths from Birmingham. Everyone shared their stories of faith during the pandemic and how lockdown had impacted on their experiences of worship.

We are very grateful to all the participants for giving up their time to share their stories.

In this extract, Julian talks about the advice given to churches to close at the start of lockdown, and the strangeness of holding services alone.

Whilst in lockdown I worked out a walk for my daily exercise. I soon realised that with a bit of tweeking i could walk the bounderies of Totterdown and according to some ancient rights this would give me the privalige to claim the title of ' Emperor of totterdown"!!!!

I moved to Bristol a week before my 18th in 1985. I stayed with friends on Richmond St and later moved to Knowle Road then Hillside St. After moving around south bristol and hotwells I returned to knowle road with my wife and 2 children around 2004.

Totterdown is a funny old place, its very small and dosnt really have an identity of its own although it tries very hard to.

Its not anybody’s fault, well, apart from the councilors who decided to bulldoze it down for a road that never got built.

I’ve always thought of Totterdown as a place people pass through. You know the phrase ‘it’s the people that make the place’. Well, in Totterdown, it’s not so much the people. Its what the people leave behind, it’s what they take with them. It’s the spaces in between. It’s the gaps and the decisions made and the passing of time.

Its easy to go to a place you dont know and photograph it with new eyes but Im not going anywhere at the moment so Im trying to look at totterdown with a fresh view.

Wikipedia says….

Built in the mid to late 19th century to house workers for the nearby railway industry, in the 1970s many of the Victorian buildings were demolished in anticipation of constructing a major junction of the Outer Circuit Road, although ultimately this section of the road was never built.[4]

Totterdown has more-recently become a popular area for the younger generation taking up work in the city centre. In 2016 it was named “fifth hippest place to live in the UK” by the Times newspaper..[5]
