You don’t like it and neither do I. While New Zealand has got off lightly compared to other parts of the world so far, today we find ourselves at home again, livin’ in lockdown. Why don’t we like lockdown? Because it restricts our freedom. I’m sure, where ever we are in the world, we’re looking forward to the end of lockdown, but will it really bring the liberty we crave? Srila Prabhupada comments:
“The need of the spirit soul is that he wants to get out of the limited sphere of material bondage and fulfill his desire for complete freedom. He wants to get out of the covered walls of the greater universe. He wants to see the free light and the spirit. That complete freedom is achieved when he meets the complete spirit, the Personality of Godhead.”
Because Bhakti yoga involves mind and sense control it is often misunderstood to be restrictive, oppressive, much like lockdown is unappreciated by some. During lockdown we are encouraged to accept short term restriction to increase our freedom in the long run; we all want liberty, but if we act freely now we’ll end up crippling our freedom in the future. Similarly, the serious yogi regulates the mind and senses, protecting him or herself from activities that hamper the attainment of true freedom, complete freedom. Bhagavad Gita explains:
“A person free from all attachment and aversion and able to control the senses through regulative principles of freedom attains the ultimate goal of yoga.”
From mid-March for over four months in 2020, we were in lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our only escape was along the country lanes behind our house. Fortunately it was a good spring and there was plenty of flora and fauna about.

During lockdown, I set about making some portraits of my neighbours here on the canal. I made a print for everyone. Some were longlisted for Rankin’s 2020 on Sky Arts, but I don’t think they made the final cut.

In August, we recorded a Lockdown Conversation via Zoom with eight people of different faiths from Birmingham. Everyone shared their stories of faith during the pandemic and how lockdown had impacted on their experiences of worship.
We are very grateful to all the participants for giving up their time to share their stories.
Annie talks about her work with the Christian Music Ministry, and how they have adapted to bring music, and hope, to people of faith through technology.
During lockdown I decided to dig out my camera and take it out with me on some of my daily walks. Lost a lot of motivation over the last few months but finally getting it back, slowly but surely. Lockdown has definitely helped me just get out and shot anything and everything.
