It was 12:30 pm when we met Nahim , our local guide, at the village of Wadi Ram (???? ???), a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. The wadi has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times including the Nabateans - leaving their mark in all kind of forms, nowdays the valley is populated by Bedouin tribes. Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. by fall Nahim set the Jeep in the direction of the camp whose located on a small hill observing a large territory of the Wadi. Lavender is one of the major crops on Hvar. Our local guide grows this and other herbs herself (the bus ride from Stari Grad to Hvar town sounded like her infomercial). Fires have devastated much of the land in the past few years, so much of this is newly planted.

We had three real local guides who were invaluable in finding water at the camps, however at this pass they told the porters this was as far as they had ever been and with world ended not much further away (seriously!). I wondered what the trouble was, we almost had a porter strike until I found this out and quickly sorted it out. Hilarious!

Crocodile by The Shifted Librarian

Local guides always take you to a restaurant or souvenir shop for a break, and ours took us to a floating restaurant with crocodiles in a pen. It was very strange, especially knowing Cambodia's not-so-distant history.

Very very sad, just a week after of our trip, Chu died in an accident in Bahia Solano... this was one of the most eager guys in the field with a vast natural knowledge that was absolutely lovely...

Ben Freeman just emailed me: "Alexa and I are saddened to learn of Chu's death. It was our pleasure to spend a week with him in April 2010; his intelligence, warmth, and supreme love and knowledge of his surroundings were obvious to anyone who shared a meal or walked in the forest with him. Whether in town or in the forest, Chu was a master of his environment; calm, perceptive, and completely tuned in to his surroundings."

Day 5 - A day on the tundra - Ben and Larry ready to hike across the tundra by Ben

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.

River Buddies is all about taking kids fly-fishing (who lack the opportunity) on the Henry's Fork with local area guides.

Not only did the kids get a day on the river, but left with all the tools needed to continue the sport at home.

This combined effort between Martin Reed and local guides, the Henry's Fork Foundation and the numerous sponsors and contributors to this event make it a priority to repeat every year for our youth.

The Zavikon Islands are a pair of islands in the Thousand Islands archipelago on the St. Lawrence River between New York and Ontario, near Rockport, Ontario.

A popular tale among local guides is that the bigger part of Zavikon is in Canada, while the smaller part is in the United States, and the foot bridge between them is the "shortest international bridge in the world

As you walk the easy trail climb to the Washington Monument, the trail has signs with key points to his life.

The local guide called this stone "the plan" of this building. A small section is broken off but one can see the pillars, the roof and for me it looks like an eye with and eyebrow in the center...

Hong Kong Island. Victoria Peak at night. Our local guide 'Gary' and Tammy. Gary doubles as a professional singer. Then, extra harrowing ride down the mountain, complete with cows in the road.

On the late bus ride to the airport Gary sang to us - John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads', Don McLean's 'American Pie', and a Chinese folk song.

Background music in stores, malls, stations, etc, often included American music, notably the John Denver song. I had to wonder just what they know and think about West Virginia, pickup trucks, levees, and mountain mommas.
