Our local guide for this day apparently plucked this bunch of flowers to shield him from the sun. I'm not sure how it was supposed to do that.

TESFA (Tourism in Ethiopia for Sustainable Future Alternatives) runs treks through the communities of Meket Woreda, North Wollo. It's a great opportunity to get off the beaten path. We visited villagers at their homes, churches and farms, viewed beautiful highland scenery, and were swarmed by very excitable children at every turn--not one who wanted anything more than to shake our hands.

Descending from Mt Gumachi (3,805 m). Sinur - one of our local guides.

My local guide met me at the hotel at 4:50 am and we rode our bikes (I rented one the night before) out to this small karst called Chao Yang Dong : Face Sun Cave. Half way up the mountain is a cave that pierces the mountain with openings on the east and west faces. Long ago it is said there was a Daoist temple inside. We sat on a ledge and waited for the sun to rise.

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.

We hiked to the small village of Batad where we stayed a couple of nights and hired a guide to show us the ancient rice terraces said to be over a thousand years old. The technology to create such terracing is presumed to have come from the early Chinese, from the southwest part of China. We did note the similarity of these terracing to that observed in the Ping An region of China. To see the comparison, search my flickr site using the heading of "Ping An".

THE AGE OF FLOWERING PLANTS

ANGIOSPERM means "seed borne in vessel," while GYMNOSPERM means "naked seed," a reference to the lack of protective structure enveloping the seed. One reason that flowering plants were able to diversify so dramatically and spread during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic, or MODERN, the era was the evolution of new structures and tissues such as the carpel, a womb-like vessel that encloses angiosperm seeds and endosperm, a placenta-like tissue that nourishes the young plant as it develop within the seed, Today, angiosperm dominate terrestrial life on the planet. At an estimated 422,000 species, they compose by far the largest group of plants. They grow in greater range of environments, exhibits a wider range of growth habits, and display more variation in form than any living group of plants. In size, angiosperm range from tiny duckweed to eucaplytuses more than 330 ft (100 m) tall.

The explosion of angiosperm diversity has gone hand in hand with the proliferation of INSECTS, BIRDS, and OTHER ANIMALS that pollinate their flowers, disperse their fruits and seeds, and eat their leaves.

Peter & Bernard are having their "Honeymoon" in the US, and I was the "local guide of the day"...:-) We walked around the city & visited North Beach, China Town, and MOMA area. We even joined in a Dyke March walking to Castro! It was a blast!...:-)

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.

I was told by the local guide that these shrubs are called Fire Bushes, mostly because they produce a small seed pod with a fiber similar to cotton. The Bedouin people used this as a firelighter.

In this case I really liked to view of the sun 'caught' in the Fire Bush and the way the light hit the pockets of cooler air was just an added bonus!

Our local guide suggested that this was a skeleton of a 12 ft. King Cobra that had been run over on the roadway.

Local guide describes how red coloring was collected from insects and used to paint the pyramids red

Our local guide at the reserve knew the spot where this owl typically roosts, so we were able to get great looks from just a few feet away.

Our local guide in Banteay Chhmar, Kit Sokun, is showing Alex how to prepare the fried beetles for eating. We also tried the spicy crickets which I liked even better then the beetles. Our visit to Banteay Chhmar was part of our Hamline University study abroad trip to Cambodia.

Found by our local guide in a tree by the trail. Amazingly, it never seemed to blink its huge eyes the whole time we were watching.

Ingólfshöfði is a nature reserve that's home to thousands of nesting sea-birds, like puffins and great skuas. This birdwatching tour was taken with the group Local Guide, which hauls people across a massive black sand beach in a hay cart to reach the cliffs where the birds live.
