The full album, visit wallies.be/galleries/thumbnails.php?album=13. - Petra is an archaeological site in Jordan, lying in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is famous for having many stone structures carved into the rock. The long-hidden site was revealed to the Western world by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. It was famously described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate prize-winning sonnet by John William Burgon. Burgon had not actually visited Petra, which remained accessible only to Europeans accompanied by local guides with armed escorts until after World War I. The site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 when it was described as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage.The ancient Nabataean city of Petra was recently voted as the seventh wonder of the ancient world.

Today was a full day with our local guide Randy out on the land. We started by visiting a Thule culture archeological site where we saw excavations and a reconstructed dwelling, along with lots of Arctic Poppies and some Loons on the pond next to it. Next we travelled north past the airport to the Tupirvik Campground, and on to 3 Mile Lake, where we stopped briefly. The next stop was at 5 Mile Lake, where our guide Randy set up a base with a windbreak tent, to enjoy tea and bannock. From this base we set out on a 6 km hike over the tundra to a pond noted for family of Eider Ducks. Returning from that pond, we spotted the remains of a Musk-ox calf, and took in some view from a bluff above the river that drains 5 Mile Lake. Following the shoreline back to base, we saw a family of Brant Ducks. We returned to Resolute Bay for dinner, then reconnected with our guide Randy for some exploring of the coastline SE of the hamlet of Resolute Bay. To end the day, our last stop was a visit to the memorial of the August 20, 2011 crash of a First Air B373. An episode of the TV series "Mayday" featured this sad disaster.
Our local guide Gerry taking photos of our group in front of the Tiananmen Gate tower. The people behind are fascinated by us - foreigners! They are probably from a remote region of China (in Beijing for a once-in-a-lifetime visit to the capital) and rarely see westerners.

A local guide and I camped for two nights right next to the Mbwelesu crater, perhaps 15 meters away from the edge, to maximize our chances of a view inside given the near-constant rain. Lighting courtesy of the lava lake.

A trekking porter nicknamed 'Beckham' I met on my trek to Everest Base Camp.
Funnily enough, we kept bumping into each other over and over again on the trek. When I descended down to Lukla after I had reached the Base Camp, I met him again, however this time he had gotten a shorter haircut and got rid of his mustache and sideburns.

Candirejo is based on 2 Javanese words: Candi and Rejo. Candi, also known as the word indicating a temple, in Javanese means Rock, as where Rejo refers to Fertile. Thus, a Fertile Rock. Considering soil in this area being full of rocks, it´s not hard to understand why it´s called Candirejo. Being in close distance to the Borobudur, this village makes a perfect location for an overnight or two. Candirejo offers Homestay accomodation. More information here.

A few hours drive outside Beijing, China (through some rather windy roads!)... definitely the non-touristy area, this part of the wall is aging gracefully and rarely sees anyone.
July 7, 2023 - João who is our local guide is explaining the infant drop into the monastery. "The Monastery of Saint Mary of Arouca was founded in the 10th century. It began as a men’s monastery, but in the middle of the 12th century it was handed over to the Benedictine nuns and has been exclusively for women since then. This monastery was the home of D. Mafalda, daughter of D. Sancho I and beatified in 1792.
The monastery was completely rebuilt in the 18th century, following the total destruction of the previous one. The church dates from between 1704 and 1730. A fire hit the monastery in 1725, forcing it to be rebuilt in parts. In 1798, the work had not yet been completed.
In 1886, the monastery closed due to the death of the last nun and all its assets passed to the Public Treasury. By then the monastic spaces were abandoned and in a state of disrepair.
The Royal Brotherhood of Queen Santa Mafalda was created in 1886 and became the main driving force behind the founding of the Arouquense Museum of Sacred Art, which was inaugurated in 1933 in the old monastic facilities.
In 1935 the monastery suffered a fire and subsequent reconstruction work.
Between the beginning of the 20th century and the end of the 1940s, several proposals were made by the central government to occupy the Arouca complex. It was only in 1948 that a consensus was reached, with the former monastic structures being ceded to the Salesian Institute with a view to setting up a college, which remained there from 1960 to 1982.
The monastery of Saint Mary of Arouca was elevated to the category of National Monument in 1910."
