Blue Ridge Southern's afternoon local T73 heads out of Canton with a small consist of cars for the various industries in Waynesville. Power for the train is WAMX GP39-2 #3939, which started life as Deleware and Hudson 7606. It would later become Boston and Maine (Guilford) 366 and Union Pacific 2745/1245 before ending up on the BLU.

I was out in the mountains for the weekend attending orientation at my future home, Western Carolina University. You can certainly expect to see more BLUposting in the future, as it is the closest railroad to the university. The mountains are so incredibly cool, and offer endless opportunities for photos that I can't wait to experience.

Recently I was getting frustrated with the lack of focus and softness in my images and couldn’t work out of it was my kit or my settings.. luckily these kites came out and allowed me to practice and adjust things until I got it right.

BNSF's Cody Local (R-PWR8162-24) with a pair of former Burlington Northern SD70MACs, three loads from CertainTeed Gypsum & Ceiling in Cody, a former Santa Fe Ortner hopper, and a caboose (shoving platform), roll underneath Highway 14 in Garland, Wyoming. The local runs a round trip between Cody, Wyoming, and Frannie (the connection to BNSF's Casper Subdivision).

MARC HHP-8 #4915 brings a local into the station at Halethorpe MD as the sun sets on May 5, 2023. The Alstom built electric locomotive is a rare beast as MARC is the only railroad left that operates them. Amtrak's have been out of service for a few years with some of them being rebuilt to be used as cab control cars, replacing Amtrak's aging fleet of former Metroliner MU cars which are currently cab control cars.

Yet another fresh Spring day.....same spot....more green!....I think this record of these will last some time yet

On a beautiful summer morning, NS P92 or the “Yadkin” heads south through rural Rowan County on Norfolk Southern’s N-Line. This is some classic Southern Railway branchline railroading. Dark territory, small towns, four-axle EMDs, and carload freight serving local businesses harken back to an era before the railroads began to shun smaller shippers in favor of intermodal and unit trains. Apparently this line was charming enough to warrant an inclusion in Dovetail Games’ Train Simulator a few years back, bringing this lovely branchline to a wider audience. The Yadkin wasn’t a bad job to work in real life either, and I caught it a few times during my time as a conductor. A Monday-Friday schedule and fairly straightforward customers made this one of the better jobs covered by the Charlotte/Greenville crew district. Gold Hill, NC, 7/14/2020.

Now having entered the Jefferson Canyon on their trip to Whitehall, MRL’s 844 Logan Local is consisted on just 3 cars and their two units on that Thursday

Man this was a good night! We need to do this again.

Here is another scene from this fun little photo shoot to raise some money for a good cause in support of N.E. Rail Preservation and their efforts to stabilize and restore the Eagle Bridge depot. Many thanks to Hal Raven (swinging the lantern) who organized this and provided his 1943 ex US Army Alco S2 masquerading as a Delaware and Hudson locomotive just like the ones that once plied these rails along with his former Penn Central caboose now painted and lettered as Greenwich and Johnsonville. And of course I must call out the supremely talented William Gill of Trains at Night fame who provided the lighting.

This is MP A136.9 on the old Delaware and Hudson Washington Branch as measured from Albany the long way around via Catleton, Whitehall, and Mechanicville. At right is the former Cambridge Steel Plow building and the former D&H freight house both preserved by the Hubbard Hall Center for the Arts and Education.

What a great night in a beautiful little community with just good people. I wish all nights could be this perfect!

We were sitting enjoying the view over the lake when a lovely White-plumed Honeyeater appeared on the drinking fountain and proceeded to slate it's thirst. In the time that it took to go to the car to get a camera, this bully had disposed of the Honeyeater and taken over the fountain.

BNSF are not very concerned with appearances so the local residents add a little touch of color.

Didn't see a train all day today so here is a shot from last year along the Devils Lake Sub. Traffic is sparse so you shoot what you can get.

Although it was the same unit, I feel pretty lucky to catch a HH twice within a week. P75 returns to Andrews Yard from the C-Line in Cayce, SC. March 28, 2020.

We should have known that the John Brothers Piano Company was going to be playing in the gallery at Local Language when we saw this piano. But it was the horn that lead us back after we circled the block.

CN 5432 east, operating as local L528, splits the classic searchlight signals at Rosedale West, on CN's Yale Subdivision.

The nuances that make this image special are fairly esoteric, and may not mean much to those who haven't visited southern British Columbia in the past quarter century.

Since the spring of 2000, CN and arch rival CP have jointly operated their parallel mainlines down the Thompson, and Fraser Canyons as a shared 'Directional Running Zone'. The agreement allowed all of the westbound traffic from both roads to operate over CN's Ashcroft, and Yale subdivisions, between a point near Ashcroft to the east, and Matsqui Junction to the west. Conversely all eastbound traffic is routed over CP's Cascade and Thompson subdivisions between Mission at the west end, and near Ashcroft at the east end. The arrangement has greatly benefited both railroads, as the total train capacity for this important traffic corridor is virtually unlimited now. Under E. Hunter Harrison's reign at CN in the mid 2000's, 5 sidings were removed on the CN side, signaling that this arrangement was permanent in their eyes. When EHH gained leadership at CP, he completed the task of gutting infrastructure at that railway too, and removed 10 sidings on their side of the canyon. The message was clear; the DRZ is here to stay.

For photographers, this operational change was met with mixed emotions. The upside being that one could now set up on the 'CP' side of the river in the morning and shoot all the eastbound traffic in optimum light, and then switch over to the 'CN' side in the afternoon as the sun shifted to favor westbound traffic. The downside to this is that for much of the DRZ, both lines run on a north-south bearing, so the time with optimum light for eastbound traffic on much of the route is limited to a scant few hours during the longest days of the year. The main point of regret though, is that on both lines many classic locations and angles were rendered effectively useless. CP has shown an appetite to run an occasional train against this current of traffic, to the effect of one or two movements per year. CN has been rigid to adhering to this doctrine though, unless the CP line has been out of service due to rock slides or other force majeure, or for the occasional work train movement.

Cue my surprise when it became apparent that CN was running their rarely used L528 symbol to pick up a cut of 32 cars from a manifest train that had been set out for reasons unknown to me at the Rosedale Siding, 22 miles up the single direction DRZ on the Yale Sub. The single light SD60 did not do justice to most of the 'old' eastbound angles on this stretch of line, but it makes a nostalgic stand in for an eastbound train taking a run at the grade and curves up the Fraser Canyon ahead.

BNSF's Golden local works the yard in Golden, CO on a beautiful fall day. A pair of spiffy SD40-2s, both being former Santa Fe units, provide the power.
