About thirty percent of Koreans self-report on the census as Christian, so you see churches everywhere; and all of them seem to feature a spire, topped by a cross; at night, red neon crosses can be seen in the lightscape of most towns and cities. As you can see, the steeple isn't architecturally necessary, but it seems to be felt to be an important part of a church's equipment, and so every free-standing church I saw, no matter how small, had one. This church was just down the street from where we were staying, one of three or so within six blocks. I didn't see any active Buddhist temples in the neighbourhood, but perhaps they don't stand out as much. In any case, only about twenty percent or so of Koreans report themselves as Buddhists, and the rest (about half) report as having no religion.
