Monitor lizards are considered to be the most highly developed lizards, possessing a relatively rapid metabolism for reptiles, several sensory adaptations that benefit the hunting of live prey, and a lower jaw that may be unhinged to facilitate eating large prey animals. Recent work indicates that the Varanid lizards, including the Komodo dragon, produce venom. These latter two adaptations are shared with snakes, which are thought to have evolved from a sister group to the Varanidae as part of a larger venom clade. However, the venom in monitor lizards accumulates around the base of the teeth, and is not injected through hollows in the teeth as in venemous snakes.

Elgaria coerulea palmeri, SIERRA ALLIGATOR LIZARD.

I found these two going at it over a female that was nearby and these two were so fiercely involved fighting, that they never knew that I was there. The looser went away with the ego bruised but he never lost any of his limbs.

There were five baby lizards on this log altogether. Taken at Stockbridge Meadow, Melbourn

"The Green Crested Lizard is able to turn brown or grey when frightened, unlike true chameleons who can change to other colors."

This species is a bright green lizard, sometimes possessing a blue tint on the head. It is able to change colour, turning darker brown when threatened. There is a dark ring around the eyes, and a dark spot at the back of the head. The males have a crest on the neck. It has a very long and thin tail (75% of total length). The body length is of 13 cm, and the total length (body + tail) is of 57 cm. It is found in forests as well as parks and rural areas. In Singapore its range is declining, as it is in competition with the introduced Calotes versicolor (Changeable Lizard).
