Montana Rail Link EMD F45 No. 390 leads the road’s LM through the milepost 50 searchlight signals guarding MRL’s Second Subdivision main line between Craver and Reed Point, Montana, on October 3, 2005. I wouldn’t mind chasing this train again…

This image is Part II of my Pixel Shift series – the monochrome continuation of the color version (Part I).
As many already know from the first image, Pixel Shift tolerates no motion: not in the frame, not in the environment. I spent hours in -3°C temperatures waiting for one single moment without a passing train or a vibrating bridge.
In that brief silence, 16 perfectly aligned sensor-shifted exposures merged into this 250MP black-and-white interpretation – stripped down to light, structure, rhythm, and the steel heartbeat of Frankfurt Central Station.
Unlike the vivid color edition, this monochrome version presents the station not as a hub of movement, but as a monumental cathedral of machinery – frozen in time.

With the acquisition of Montana Rail Link by BNSF the sight of MRL liveries locos will become history. Dominating this wide angle view is MRL 500, a fifty year old veteran.
We always have a meal at the Darwin Sailing Club when visiting. Such a lovely spot and far less crowded than Mindil Beach.

Sweet evening light illuminates MRL 4406 and 4008 as they cross over Fish Creek on the scenic Montana Rail Link 4th Sub. The Day Gas local shuttles fuel between Missoula and Thompson Falls to bridge a gap in the Yellowstone Pipeline which runs between Billings and Moses Lake, Washington. A fleet of 154 tank cars were built specifically for this service in 1997.

Montana Rail Link’s Fourth Subdivision main line through Tuscor, Montana, awakens with the cantilever signal on the west end of the siding flicking to green, signaling a clear path west along the Clark Fork on July 5, 2022. The approaching BNSF westbound is still a ways off as illuminated beams from the searchlights project though moisture-laden air and the Milky Way.

A quintet of Montana Rail Link 45-series EMD’s roll downgrade after pushing a westbound BNSF freight over Bozeman Pass, glinting the day’s last light west of Livingston, Montana, on October 10, 2005. MRL F45 No. 390, along with a SD45-2 and a trio of SD45s head back home for the evening.

Montana Rail Link SD45 (rebuilt locomotive called a SD45-2) No. 328 heads back to Missoula light after setting out a “Jimbo” work train at Thompson Falls, Montana, on September 19, 2012. Unique caboose No. 1007 came from MRL’s sister railroad SRY Rail Link, and was originally from the British Columbia Hydro Railway.

It’s a rainy day at Montana Rail Link’s Helena Roundhouse, as MRL Machinist Kevin Leonard takes a call as he reflects on what these new EMD locomotives will mean to his job after changing the filthy air filters on Montana Rail Link SD70ACe Nos. 4305 and 4302 at Helena, Montana, late in the afternoon of October 8, 2005. The the sinuous 2.2 percent grade up Mullan Pass west of Helena, and the long, confining summit tunnel are very hard on locomotives.
In 2009, MRL enlarged the clearances of Mullan Tunnel to ease the situation a bit, but as long as heavy trains continue to climb Mullan Pass, the Helena Roundhouse will always have to care for the well-used helpers that call Helena home. Right? BNSF may try to change status quo, but will likely fail, as years of experience on the mountain have shown. Also likely is a former MRL machinist, now working for BNSF, sitting in this chair looking out the window wondering what will happen at Helena Roundhouse.
Frog Pond is half ice and half open water, and reflects a winter sky that has finally quit raining on the afternoon of January 27, 2020, as an eastbound BNSF coal empty cruises by at Trout Creek, Montana, on Montana Rail Link’s busy Fourth Subdivision.
The old railway track – and the Downs Link – were hidden away a little down the road and soon I was strolling along a path strewn with fallen leaves beautiful nestled in the South Downs just stunning and amazing views..

Montana Rail Link EMD SD70ACe locomotives used in helper service over Mullan Pass accumulated a ton of grime and soot working through confining Mullan Tunnel under the Continental Divide. MRL washed these units on a nearly daily basis, as this crew from R&R Mobile Services does on brand new No. 4305 at Helena, Montana, on October 8, 2005.

It’s raining, but I still shot the local anyway. On the afternoon of July 6, 2023, Montana Rail Link’s Helena local hauls eleven cars downgrade out of Winston for the lime plant at Townsend, Montana. The hardest part was aiming the camera toward the incoming rain, without getting the lens totally covered…
New England Central GP38 #3852 leads its train west across the bridge over Swan Creek on the very western edge of Saginaw, back in 2011. The Mid Michigan RR was using the 3852 on this day, which I've been told was one of the better units they'd get from the Huron & Eastern. 3852 became HESR 2027 after the G&W merger and left the property in 2017.

View along the Transporter Bridge abutment which led to the first pier. The buildings on the left were a ticket office and waiting room later repurposed as an electricty sub station.
The Widnes–Runcorn Transporter Bridge crossed the river Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal linking the towns of Runcorn and Widnes.
Completed in 1905, it was Britain's first transporter bridge and the largest of its type ever built in the world.
It continued in use until 22 July 1961, when it was replaced by a through arch bridge, now known as the Silver Jubilee Bridge in 1961.
The transporter bridge was then demolished though traces of the bridge can still be seen on the Widnes side of the River Mersey.
High Museum's elevators' walls are covered in metal links held together by cables. This is an iPhone close up of one such wall run thru the Circular App which was edited in PS.
