For the Macro Monday challenge "Paper" (September 28th 2020)
A small piece of handmade Japanese mitsumata washi paper. Japanese traditional papers are like no others - a sheet of the soft, flexible, strong washi paper is a work of art in its own right! Here I cut a tiny strip and tried to capture a little of its texture.

This is the second MM appearance of my Schleich Mini Eldrador "dragon snake" figure. The first one was for "Ficticious" in October '23. It wasn't easy to convince the proud fire creature to let me put it into a small kitchen container, get itself doused in water, and, the possibly worst thing: spend the night and half of Sunday in the freezer. But Bertie Wanda's shining example (and Flickr fame) were very convincing, so it played along. Not without hissing at me "Just wait what will happen to your freezer tonight. You might find it molten to pieces tomorrow!" before I closed the freezer door. No such thing happened, luckily, and when I took the tiny dragon snake out of the freezer, it told me: "I spent the night doing some internet research on ice baths and their health benefits. With all my inner fire, it was quite a refreshing experience." Such dignity... ;)
The image is a single shot, handheld even, to get the right angle. During the freezing process, the small figurine drifted towards the upper edge of the small container, and even though translucent, I didn't want to have it in the image. I also tried some focus stacking but the camera gave me an error several times. The half-frozen dragon snake with the bright ice texture layer on top was probably still a little too diffuse for autofocus to catch on properly during the stacking process. I could have combined the images in Helicon Focus, but liked this single image and thought that it was sharp enough. I hope you agree.
Illuminated from above with my natural light photo LED lamp, and slightly from the left/front with my LED Lenser flashlight set on "spot" to highlight the dragon snake's face and some of the ice texture.

The sun is rising behind the massive precipice of Khao Ta Mong Lai overlooking Ao Noi (Little Bay), Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Like a giant metal praying mantis looming out of the mist, this old beauty was constructed by Dorman Long, the famous steelmakers of history.

Female Boat-tailed grackle with snack for nest
Our drive to the cabin was a slow one as we left early in the morning and drove for three hours in heavy fog that was like pea soup. I have not seen such heavy fog last as long as this did. Even the fog in Newfoundland was never this bad when we were there. We were so relieved when the blue skies prevailed about an hour before we got to the park and we had great weather from noon on. I love this image because the cold blue tones of winter show up on the snow while the hint of a sunrise was trying to break through the heavy fog. Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday!
Like their diminutive Least cousins, American Bitterns believe (or perhaps hope) that sticking their beaks skyward makes them disappear into the surrounding reeds. I suspect it works as often as not, at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge near Surfside, Texas.

A female stands in water grooming in the middle of a small flock. While the males get a lot more attention, I find the females have a lovely subtle plumage, and the fall reflections on the water framed the scene well.
A larger group spent several weeks on the Lake in the fall, spooked and flushed periodically by Hawks and the occasional Bald Eagle. The species is a frequent fall visitor, and there are occasional northbound migrants in the spring.
A feature of the species that always seems striking to my eye is the short, beautifully coloured bill. It is often described as ‘goose-like’ and it helps them have greater pulling force on the underwater greens that form the core of their diet.
