I just can't get into museums. I'm not sure why. I love what they stand for, I think all the facts are interesting, and am fascinated by the art that goes into them. But I just can't get excited when I'm in one.
Today, my cousin was in town, and she and her friends wanted to go to the museum. When you're showing someone around New York, you go to the places they want to go. It's being a good host. Also, when you love a place, you want to make it as easy as possible for someone else to love it to. We don't all love things for the same reason, but love is love, and it's nice to share.
So I found myself at the Museum of Natural History. I was tired. It became clear very quickly that I was not going to read the little plaques next to each exhibit, so after a bit of wandering, it was time for some photography. I sat in the dark room next to the primates, the cages lit with scenes of the animals they contained. These were beautiful, and I really could find appreciation for the work that went into making them. Alright, so I found something I like about this place, but I still wasn't in the mood. I started watching people as they moved throughout the rooms, many as impatient as me, some kids just excited to be somewhere new, others absorbed into the screens of the cellphones. However, a few seemed absored into these exhibits. For them, time slowed down as an alternate world seemed to dance through their heads. I couldn't tell you what it was, other than to say I wanted to go there, for they seemed fascinated and happy.
As I watched these people, my impatience melted away into something different. I could not hate this place, only envy it. There was clearly something here which I didn't get, but which was wonderful.
I don't hate museums. I just can't sit still long enough appreciate them. I do seem to like the people who appreciate them. There's something to that statement.
today at preschool it was pajama day and they played st nikolaustag and st nikolaus left oranges and peanuts in their shoes with a few chocolate coins and a toy while they played in the tubes (indoor playground like habitrail for kids)

the multi cultural celebrations and fun things for the kids to learn from all over the world (on tuesday they made potato latkes and had some dreidel games)
my son was willing to help grate the potatoes but he said he did not eat the latkes because they were not like ours (i do a mix of sweet potato and russet potato-so all i can figure is he wanted some orange shreds in it)

My Dad is tractor-crazy- can't pass a farm-supply shop or even Sears without turning in to check the equipment, from tiny tillers to monster machines useful only on monster fields. Despite having only a small garden plot now, he still wants a new tractor to plow it. The heart wants what the heart wants. I think this is the only tractor Mom's gonna okay at this point, though.

The Ryedale Society of Model Engineers has its HQ at Gilling East in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. A scene from day three of its 2025 August Bank Holiday Weekend Main Line Rally.
The event ran, each of the three days, from 0800 to 1700. According to the society's website: "During this time, the Gilling railway is operated as per full size practice with steam and diesel outline models hauling timetabled trains around the double track main line. The track is controlled in the Giling station area by a 30-lever signal box with automatic signals on the outer sections. A second thirty lever box controls operations in the Erimus Yard."
Also from the society website, rsme.org.uk: "The RSME is a group of like-minded model railway engineers of wide-ranging ages and experience. Members come from all over the country. Most live within 30 miles of the club, which is in the village of Gilling East, but others come from hundreds of miles away. We have our headquarters in our clubhouse behind the village hall.
"Our main activity is developing and running our fine miniature railway. Most of our railway is multi-gauge (3½", 5" and 7¼") but the emphasis is on 5" gauge. Our track is laid at ground level, and we like to emulate main line practice in the construction and operation of the railway."
The S5's sepia is usually too yellow or red for my liking. But in this case, the sepia was the best looking version of this photo. At Graue Mill, Hinsdale.

Hamburg is a major international and domestic tourist destination. The Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2015.Hamburg's rivers and canals are crossed by around 2,500 bridges, making it the city with the highest number of bridges in Europe, and with 5 of the world's 29 tallest churches standing in Hamburg, it is also the city with the highest number of churches surpassing 100 metres (330 ft) worldwide. Aside from its rich architectural heritage, the city is also home to notable cultural venues such as the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls. It gave birth to movements like Hamburger Schule and paved the way for bands including the Beatles. Hamburg is also known for several theatres and a variety of musical shows. St. Pauli's Reeperbahn is among the best-known European red light districts.

Like many in Michigan we've experienced an influx of these finches over the past few days. Dark clouds and light rain made for challenging photography, but I couldn't resist trying to get a few shots with the flowering crab apple tree in the background.
