When we went to North Carolina's Outer Banks in early April, I finally made the climb to the top of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse (up roughly 150 feet via 214 stairs); the views made the climb quite worthwhile. This shot to the west shows Currituck Sound; the previous photo, looking NE, shows part of Corolla and the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse, built 1873-75 and first lit December 1, 1875, is still an active aid to navigation under U.S. Coast Guard jurisdiction. After the light was automated in the 1930s, the keepers' houses and overall property fell into disrepair. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse Complex has been beautifully restored by Outer Banks Conservationists, a nonprofit organization, over a period of about three decades at a cost of about $1.5 million; the lighthouse opened to the public in 1991, with restoration of the other buildings following. Currituck Beach Lighthouse Complex was added to the National Register of HIstoric Places in 1973 (73001333), with a boundary increase in 2000.
As I had little luck in finding waders sized for women's feet, I had to make do with a pair of Dawn's colorful rubber boots. Yes, the pattern is vibrant, especially when paired against the pants. Eventually, the water got warm enough for me to take them off.
First time to try photostitching in photoshop, it works! yey! Took the shot from a very windy place on top of the lighthouse. coooold.
Apparently, this was where Ponce de Leon docked and set up camp to defeat France, staying in Jacksonville, who was stealing their gold.

Continuing with photos from the top of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse last month, panning somewhat left from the previous photo provided this view of the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education on the eastern shore of Currituck Sound; unfortunately, I had to turn more toward the sun for this shot. The Center for Wildlife Education is part of the Currituck Heritage Park, which is on a small portion of the acreage of an estate built in the 1920s, part of which survives as the Whalehead Club (next photo). The Center for Wildlife Education opened in this 22,000 square-foot building in 2006.
The far end of the long boardwalk through the marshy area seen in the previous photo is on the right side of this photo, while the shorter (but still long) boardwalk near the Center for Wildlife Education is the one from which the lighthouse photo below was taken; the water end of that walkway is visible through the lighthouse railing on the left side of the preceding photo.

This shot to the NE shows the north end of Corolla (the road ends, giving way to beach -- on which 4WD vehicles can go -- just beyond the buildings); the next photo show Currituck Sound to the west of the lighthouse. With gray skies and a chill in the air, Julie and I went exploring Michigan's Upper Peninsula yesterday.
We crossed the Mackinac Bridge for breakfast at the Wild Blueberry Bakery in St. Ignace before visiting the Wawatam Lighthouse.
Then we headed up to the Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley.
We had a great time exploring the UP and are looking forward to our next visit!

This is Alyssa. We're in a "long distance relationship" right now; she transferred to UF and I'm at UCF. At home, we live one street away. Before she transferred, she was in Orlando and we were super close then too. And the joke with us is that we were both in LDRs before and this one we're gonna make work, haha.
