Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse stands on a dramatic headland east of Seal Rocks village. Completed in 1875, it is the first lighthouse designed by colonial architect James Barnet and one of only two towers in Australia with an external stairway. It was originally built to guide ships along the rocky coastline, after a number of incidents, including the shipwrecking of the SS Catterthun and the Rainbow. Despite the coast being illuminated by the lighthouse, 20 wrecks have occurred since the lighthouse was built.

It seems like an age since I’ve been out and captured a good sunset, I seem to keep missing them at the moment so here’s a shot of Godrevy from a few weeks ago. I do love a bit of drama on the Cornish coast!

Pendlebury Lighthouse, Saint Andrews-by-the-sea, New Brunswick. I have many photos of this during the day, but this is the first at dusk, and I like the lighting.

Constructed in 1833, St. Andrews Lighthouse is the oldest remaining mainland lighthouse in New Brunswick and is commonly referred to as Pendlebury Lighthouse, the name of the family that tended the light for almost 100 years (from the 1840s to the 1930s).

Race Point Light is a historic lighthouse on Cape Cod, in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It was first established in 1816, the third light on Cape Cod (after Highland Light (1797) and Chatham Light (1808)). The original light was a 25 feet (7.6 m) rubblestone tower that featured one of the earliest rotating beacons, which distinguished it from others on Cape Cod. In 1858 the light got a fourth order Fresnel lens and, in 1874, a second keeper's quarters. In 1875, after significant deterioration of the original tower, it was replaced with an iron tower lined with brick. The original keeper's house was rebuilt as part of the project. The station was electrified in 1957. The larger keeper's house was removed in 1960 and the other was updated.

The station has been restored by the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, and both the keeper's house and the whistle house are available for vacation rental.

Race Point Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Race Point Light Station on June 15, 1987, reference number 87001482.

Cape Schanck Lighthouse photomerged from 6 photos. It's a giant file with tremendous detail, however it is limited here on Flickr. Photo taken in October 2015.

All of my photos on Flickr are limited in size to protect my images from being stolen and used elsewhere. If you're interested in purchasing a high resolution print from me, please message me and I would be happy to accommodate the request. I will have a website in 2015 that you can order directly from. Thank you.

One of my favorite Great Lakes lighthouses, due mainly to it's location. Unfortunately, this is one where you can't climb the tower. I believe it's because of insurance regulations, not because it's still active. Many other active lights let you climb up. I hope that someday the Alcona County Historical Society will work this out.

Some facts about Sturgeon Point Light:

Built in 1869, 70' high, still has a 3 1/2 order fresnel lens. In 1913, it was converted to acetylene, and put in "no keeper" status, meaning it was unmanned, and in 1935 the light was electrified. Even though still an active light, in 1961 the property was deeded to the State of Michigan by the U.S. Government. In 1982, the Alcona Historical Society restored the keepers quarters.

For starters to appreciate the scale of the waves zoom in on the two guys standing in the water. Yikes!! A cold front came through on this July evening, and conditions were perfect for the photo op. The lake levels were even low enough to expose beach that isnt always exposed. Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse in Fairport Ohio. This charming forty-two-foot tower, with its attached two-story keeper’s cottage, sits near the end of the west breakwater that shields the man-made harbor of Fairport. The harbor, in turn, protects the mouth of the Grand River, which has served as one of the region’s most important commercial hubs

This is the original lighthouse at a lovely little seaside town not far from home called Burnett Heads. A new (ugly) concrete light was built in the 70's and this original building was relocated to a site closer to the centre of town.

Rattray Head Lighthouse situated on the East Scottish coast between Fraserbrough and Peterhead.

The 120-foot (37 m) Rattray Head lighthouse was built in 1895. It was built by the engineers and brothers David Alan Stevenson and Charles Alexander Stevenson. In February 1982 it became unmanned and self-working.

The lighthouse is accessible by way of a causeway that is usually underwater being only visible at low tide. It is wide enough for a vehicle to cross.

Compare and contrast to the Heceta head Lighthouse in the comments below. Gosh, they look like twins! Some information on the massive lighthouse building undertaken in the mid to late 1800s: www.pbs.org/legendarylighthouses/html/pnworgl.html

Originally powered by a kerosene concentric wick lamp and featuring a Fresnel lens prism floating on a mercury bath. The prism was rotated by descending weights, the light was electrified in 1961 and fully automated in 1995. The light flashes twice in 30 seconds, and is visible to 27 nautical miles. (Wikipedia)
