10 Powerful Life Lessons from The Alchemist:The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one of the best-selling books in history. The story of Santiago, the shepherd boy on a journey to realize his “Personal Legend” has inspired people all over the world to live their dreams.

Here are ten of the most popular passages and lessons to apply to your life:

1. Fear is a bigger obstacle than the obstacle itself

“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”

Any new pursuit requires entering uncharted territory — that’s scary. But with any great risk comes great reward. The experiences you gain in pursuing your dream will make it all worthwhile.

2. What is “true” will always endure

“If what one finds is made of pure matter, it will never spoil. And one can always come back. If what you had found was only a moment of light, like the explosion of a star, you would find nothing on your return.”

Truth cannot be veiled by smoke and mirrors — it will always stand firm. When you’re searching for the “right” decision, it will be the one that withstands the tests of time and the weight of scrutiny.

3. Break the monotony

“When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.”

Gratitude is the practice of finding the good in each day. Life can easily become stagnant, mundane, and monotonous, but that changes depending on what we choose to see. There’s always a silver lining, if you look for it.

4. Embrace the present

“Because I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man.”

There’s no point dwelling in the past and letting it define you, nor getting lost and anxious about the future. But in the present moment, you’re in the field of possibility — how you engage with the present moment will direct your life.

5. Your success has a ripple-effect

“That’s what alchemists do. They show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.”

Growth, change, and evolution are weaved into the fabric of reality. Becoming a better version of yourself creates a ripple effect that benefits everything around you: your lifestyle, your family, your friends, your community.

6. Make the decision

“When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he has never dreamed of when he first made the decision.”

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the unknowns and finer details of your dreams. Actions will flow out of having confidence in your decision; sitting on the fence will get you nowhere.

7. Be unrealistic

“I see the world in terms of what I would like to see happen, not what actually does.”

Some of the greatest inventions would not have happened if people chose to accept the world as it is. Great achievements and innovations begin with a mindset that ignores the impossible.

8. Keep getting back up

“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.”

Because the eighth time could be your breakthrough. Some of the greatest novels in history were published after receiving hundreds of rejections. Thankfully, those authors never gave up.

9. Focus on your own journey

“If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

It’s easy to be influenced by others, but you’ll be miserable if you end up living someone else’s life. There’s nothing wrong with taking advice and learning from others, but make sure it aligns with your desires and passions.

10. Always take action

“There is only one way to learn. It’s through action.”

You can study, read, and listen until you turn blue in the face, but the full experience is when you take action, and let the rubber meet the road. Once you’re done aiming, pull the trigger.

This was probably one of the most heart-warming sightings we had in our recent trip to Africa. It was the dry season and the rains weren't expected until November. This riverbed had no water but the elephants knew which spots had water close to the surface so they could have a drink. This mother was teaching her baby how to dig underground for water. Taken in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. Another photo is in the comment box.

Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Life is kind of like a party, You invite a lot of people, some stay all night, some leave early, some laugh with you, some laugh at you and some show up really late. But in the end, after the fun, there are a few who stay to help you clean up the mess. And most of the time they aren't even the ones who made the mess. These people are your true friends in life. They are truly the ones that matter.

It should say "This Will be You, Even If You Study."

Yes, Barbie can be anything. She can be a super model, an astronaut, a teacher, a veterinarian, a secretary, film star, entrepreneur, the President and, for the first time ever in her illustrious career as a renaissance woman, she will join the minimum-wage-paying slow death that is the food industry.

She may be beautiful, educated and overqualified, but the job creators of corporate America never met a minimum wage employee without benefits they didn't like, regardless of qualification. So here she is. Soon she will able to stub her toes with the best of them, and while she works hard to get that toe hold in the fast food industry, she will be sure to remember everyday that the American Dream is waiting just around the corner.

Over the past couple of years there has been an attempt at "realistic depiction" of Barbies - or dolls - in general.

A couple of years ago I read about the idea of creating a handicapped Barbie sitting in a wheel chair.

Then there was the Barbie-Goes-Bald-Because-She-Has-Cancer Barbie that I saw being discussed by fans on social media.

There is also the "correct proportions" doll going around, which is a doll that has a body whose proportions are much closer to that of an average sized, real female human versus the rather unrealistic body proportions of Barbie and similar sized fashion doll.

Recently, a doll came out with stickers for acne scars, cellulite, stretch marks and scars.

So, seeing this image of Minimum Wage Barbie in a McDonald's costume really amused me. I think it is pretty clever.

I guess there is a sincere logic in creating this tongue in cheek depiction of Barbie as a minimum wage employee of the fast food industry, given recent creative attempts at teaching children the facts of life. This one, unlike the others, however, doesn't focus on looks. It tries to get beyond that skin deep beauty, down to the things Barbie has alleging to be doing when she is not busy being pretty.

I have personally very little use for menstruating dolls with scars, or dolls with handicaps and disease or showing the side effect of medication. I am not really sure why that is needed as some kind of a child toy and what kind of a message it expects to send. Everyone appreciates beauty. And kids playing with pretty things will not make them not understand the reality of a balding head due to chemo therapy.

Life Lessons // Stokesby, England #igersStokesby #igersEngland It sure is a special thing. On Friday I had my first session with a psychotherapist. It was great. Not quite sure what to expect but open to the experience, it was good to have a first consultation where I could explain what's been going on over the past few months. I walked away with a smile on my face and went walking around the city for the rest of the day. I was happy at having taken the first step, and relief as well having chosen somebody whom I felt comfortable talking with, and who has the knowledge, experience and professionalism I was looking for. It got me thinking over the weekend a bit and this morning I could feel myself becoming nervous during yoga, knowing I had my first main session coming up after lunch. A double session meant it was 3.30 when we had finished. Happy and relieved I felt better afterwards and headed back for home. There are certain processes we are working with to overcome the trauma and unfortunate events I have experienced, and I found the process quite interesting and insightful. We were making progress, and with his help, understanding and support I could feel, and he could see, my motivation coming back. On the drive home time just zoomed by, then I was greeted by this sky. I saw it as a reminder about the afternoon's conversation, and the beauty of life. Therapy comes in many shapes and forms, and unfortunately sometimes has a stigma attached to it. If you are struggling through something and need help, seek it. The acknowledgment that something is wrong, and that something can be done about it, can be seen as a first step in coming to terms with what you are dealing with. I have so far found therapy and healing amongst friends, family, nature, quietness, reflection and amidst precious, pressure-less time. There is a lot to learn in this life. Screw the stigma and if you need to, be honest and go do, it's a path to a better you..!! via Instagram ift.tt/1TBfBTZ

if only we could all live authentically...follow our passions from childhood, and become the people who we are meant to be...

EVERYBODY HAS A CALLING

it seems my son's has to do with trucks and cars and vehicles of every kind...

been busy with life and of course the lifeclass.. thank you everyone for your kind comments..if you care to listen anymore, i am happy to share more of the class:

so many incredible lessons last week to talk about, but i will have to sum it all up

#3 is- WE BECOME WHAT WE BELIEVE WE WILL BECOME..

this is no secret.. many masters have talked about this ..the Buddha talks about this in the Dhammapada.. "We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, We make our world."

the wake up message- pay attention to your thoughts!!! what we experience is a direct result of our beliefs..concious or unconscious

lesson #4- THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREEEEE!

oh how i know this one all too well.. if you are hiding any aspect of who you truly are, you cannot live a full and authentic life

lesson #5 JOY RISING

it is in giving that we truly recieve... nothing better than giving another joy.. JOY is Godly.. ;-) service ..service ..service ..it's true... nothing in life will give you more good feelings or satisfaction other than the feeling you get from helping others..from changing the lives of others.. motherhood & fatherhood falls into this catagory by the way ;-) that is...if you are consciously parenting

lesson #6 is EVERYBODY HAS A CALLING..be who you are meant to be...

not that you have to save the world, or make tremendous amounts of money at your calling but that you at least get to express what you are truly passionate about in some way in your life..and through your joy you will effect the world-- whether it manifests through your work, as a volunteer opportunity, or as a joyful hobby ( hello fellow flickr friends) FOLLOW YOUR BLISS!!!!!

and tonight was

#7 AGING BEAUTIFULLY

as i grow older..been thinking about this one more and more lately.. i have admitted before how much of my self worth comes from my appearance, and i know how i need to work on this... because beauty fades... but if you cultivate your inner beauty.. your heart... the true you... you can shine on..and keep shining in different and more important ways

To me a well lived life is similar to a symphony rather than a solo. My point takes nothing away from a solo, as a single voice performance makes its own life-lessons. But every life is like a center-stage solo in the eyes of our Creator. One person at a time, we are all being judged on our own act (Romans 14:12). Our individual performances are part of something much greater. We aren't here just to sing our own song.

The apostle Paul gave us a view of this bigger picture when he wrote, " For in fact the body is not one member but many. If the foot should say, 'Because I am not a hand, am not of the body,' is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, ' Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,' is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased" (1 Corinthians 12:14-1).

The human body is like an orchestra. Individual members, important as they are, work for a pupose greater than themselves!

Together the members of a symphony create carefully composed and orchestrated moods. Some are quiet & reflective, while others build with great energy & resolve with a flourish. At the direction of their conductor, the members, well-rehearsed, move as one.

In the wisdom of God, the members of the body of Christ are also designed to resonate and move with one another. When one hurts, those who care share the pain. When one does well, the love of friends & family gives many reasons to be happy (1 Corinthians 12:25-27). In view of such resonance & rhythm, the apostle Paul urged members of God's family, " Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep " (Romans 12:15).

When the people of Christ care for one another, they move like the rising and falling emotions of a symphony. This is by our great Composer's design. As explained by the lyrically beautiful yet profound words of Solomon; " To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven; a time to be born, a time to die, ...a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance, ...a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace " (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8).

To produce contrasting moods and grand sweeps of symphonic harmony a well-trained orchestra moves together through complex notes, chords and such. So, too, the music of God is heard not only in the cooperation of many people, but also in the blending of many spiritual notes, facts, and principles. Every word and principle of God stands on its own, but not alone. Without truth, faith is presumption. Without patience, hope is impulsive. Without love, eloquence is noise (1 Corinthians 13:1).

Without a director, the members of an orchestra could be playing their own song! Even in the same symphony they could be on different pages.

So too, the people of Christ need a great Director who can turn their individual contributions into shared music. With the music of many, the apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians, " Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him " (Colossians 3:16-17).

Without the leadership of Christ, we would be left looking for a leader worthy of our complete confidence. Apart from His direction, the church would be little more than a group of individuals stumbling through a piece of music no one really understands.

Yet, in the noise of our individual lives, Christ stands among us, ready to be our great Conductor. The composition is His, the music is His and the orchestra, conceived and bought at a great price, is also His. Together we are rehearsing for a presentation far greater than any of us have yet imagined.

Father in heaven, in our quiet moments we hear the sounds of a great symphony in the distance. Forgive us for thinking that our one-person performance is all that counts. Please help us not to miss our part in the greater symphony- no matter how much or little You ask of us. Amen.

saw this on my fb feed earlier this morning and it struck me as extremely metaphoric. thank you to whomever created this.

An excellent life lesson for baby birds is watching for predators while you eat. That's mom behind the baby. Little girl still has a bit of baby fuzz on top of her head.

•Year 1

•Just a Friendly Neighborhood Hero

•…and Avenger(?!)

•My Darkest Hour

•This is somethin’ else…

•Back to Basics (life lesson: never throw away your old clothes)

•My inner demons have a face now… a very punchable face

•A little bit older and a little bit wiser… so what’s next?

"Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently…they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."

I just watched Jobs, yea a bit late, but I did. Honestly I thought it was amazing and just super inspiring. There were so many great quotes and life lessons in that movie. I'm one to always look at these incredibly talented people and know they do have so much talent and worked so hard to get to where they are, but still I always contribute a little bit to luck. But maybe there is no luck in the world? Because on top of these people being insanely talented and working incredibly hard, what I contributed to luck is really them throwing themselves, 100% entirely, into whatever it is they are doing. Plunging in, head first, without caution. And we all need to learn to do that. I always think I will never be lucky enough to change the world, to leave a footprint or even be noticed. But shit, that's what I want so badly and now...now I'm feeling like it may be possible. We cannot be afraid of failure, In fact we must embrace failure, we must risk it. Because honestly, we have to risk it all to get to the best place. And risking it all does include failure. Because let's face it, you are going to fail again and again and again. But each time you will learn something, and eventually, you will achieve greatness. We need to stop even thinking of things as failures-thats something I have learned (or more like am trying to learn and remember) from Brooke Shaden. Why? Because like I said, you always learn something from that failure, and if you are learning something, then it isn't really a failure. Another thing I would like to remember from Jobs is to stop looking at things and trying to be better. But instead to look at something/someone and strive to be different. I think thats important.

I want to make people feel. Thats my goal. If just one person can look at one of my photos and feel, whether it be feeling what I felt for that image or something entirely their own, then I have been successful in that photograph. That goes to my art photography and photojournalism. I don't want to have just "pictures." Anyone can take a picture. I want to have "photos." It takes talent to take Photos.

I have photo ideas built up like crazy because I'm scared to take them. I'm scared they will fail, not be as great as they should, I don't know how to go about them, etc. But I need to get over that. How will I ever know if I don't try. I have a picture that I am so psyched to post, which I will in a couple days, but the thing is...I almost never had that photo. I almost didn't go out to take it that day. I almost gave up editing. Because when I was first putting it together it was looking very fake and I didn't like it and I was about 5 seconds from just quitting. From giving up on that photo, but I decided to give it a bit more time to see it through. And I am so insanely happy that I did, because I really am happy with it— i dont get to say that very often. But thats what I mean, I almost never knew what I had because I almost didn't try. How do we know what weve got if we won't see it through?

I want to dream of something impossible, and make it happen. I want other people to look at me and say I'm mad. Because all the best people are.

*this image is actually just me messing around with some extra out-takes from the other photo I mentioned earlier...the one I'm excited to post.

I hope you all have an inspired day, go out and change the world. Make something. anything. make something new. Go dive full force, head first, all in, 100% into your dream. If you do, you'll make it. If you don't, you'll never know what you could be.

Life lesson: Do not judge people based on one picture you see

Circa 1990 Film Era

One of my Life Lessons just before the "Talk" how babies are made. "Ask your mother ." She's the expert ! My job was done . LOL

Life Lesson #1:

Never let your “friends” talk you into doing something stupid. WHY? They aren't really your friends and, if you listen, not only is what they want you to do stupid, but so are you.

Be your own person even if it means standing alone and away from the herd...oops…crowd.

Danbo learnt a valuable life-lesson today - cardboard Amazon boxes and rain don't mix well.

Just an excuse to try out my latest eBay bargain - an old 180mm f2.8 prime :-)

(Life Lessons from Street Signs)

I missed Bootie. He was gone three years ago.

He is a lovely cat. This is my archive picture of Bootie in 2011.

Have a good weekend friends!

I did mention my home is haven for cats. :o)

My neighbor’s cats love to come and have treats or play with us. Now we have this new kid in the block. My wife gave him the name Bootie (I spelled it wrong as Booty).

Bootie is still scared of me. I have to take the picture far away with my Fuji compact.

The problem is that Bootie does not get along with the other cats hanging around i.e. Grey Grey and Shanghai.

There is life lessons from the little bear called Winnie.

And there are life lessons from cats too. Boys do not get along with boys. Girls do not get along with boys.

There is something called personality!

P.S. My wife corrected my spelling of Bootie's name.

LIFE LESSONS I HAVE LEARNED:

A truly crazy person can make a sane person feel crazy....and yes, unfortunately I have come across a few crazies in my life! The beauty of maturity is knowing when to walk away and free ones soul of negativity. Life is just to darn short to be around others who fail to appreciate it! I now live for myself, so that I have more to give to others. There is no pleasing everyone no matter how hard you try. Just don't forget to smile even when it hurts! :)

Machel-I will surely miss your wonderful photos on flickr-I hope at some point in time you can find your way back, but until then enjoy all that you do and you will always "bee" remembered here by so many people who enjoy your wonderful work, inspiration, education you gave us on mushrooms and other things in nature and life lessons, and your company. Keep in touch with us.

Projeto Paisagem - Vik Muniz - Rio+20

Vik Muniz projected on the ground a photograph that he made of Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro) from the Mirante Dona Marta, in Botafogo. And had the collaboration of the public that included their recyclable materials as plastic bottles, tetra pack cartons and aluminum cans in the picture until the design was completed with 65x60 ft. It was 1.3 ton of trash.

Born in São Paulo in 1961, Muniz has made a name for himself in the art world with his characteristic style of creating images using non-art materials. His works have included creations made from thread, wire, cotton, chocolate syrup, caviar, used computer parts and ripped magazine pages. He then photographs them, preserving the image of the work for display.
