don't drink out of the pitcher!!

or the milk jug!

Initially...my idea was to have the fish in his/her bowl on the table and to stand beside it spitting a rainbow shaped stream into the bowl...now that would have been neat!!! But it still turned out pretty cool :)

When an older buck finds a baby buck chasing his does he decides to take the youngster aside and give him his 4-Points of advice. Was fun watching this play out as they acted in slow motion with neither being hurt and the elder's antlers fitting perfectly around the younger's head and pinning his ears back. Shot 10/27/24 in Milwaukee County.

Hope you can stand some more chipmunk pictures because I still have lots to go!

Later ~ well, I had so many chipmunk pictures that I decided to do a calendar of Chipper ~ hope you like it!

Yes, we're still alive and healthy. And the kitty is growing like a weed, and getting more independent with each passing day. Our adult cat (Mittens) is actually quite protective of him, and they are practically inseparable now....so I expect I'll begin phasing Flickr back into my routine this week. Thanks for bearing with us as we dealt with the unexpected addition to our family. 💖💋

I will post some new pictures later this week, but in the meantime, here are a few photos from last month that haven't been posted. As I recall, Daisy was on her way to get an oil change after work. And she got a first person education in how women are treated differently at such places. As I fully expected, and to Daisy's dismay, they did their level best to convince her that our car was in desperate need of practically every service they offered. And though they always at least make that attempt, Daisy was surprised how hard they pushed it this time, forcing her to reject their advances multiple times. Ah well....welcome to my world, Miss Daisy! 😜💋💋

Our Daily Challenge: Black and White

We must live through the dreary winter

If we would value the spring;

And the woods must be cold and silent

Before the robins sing.

The flowers must be buried in darkness

Before they can bud and bloom,

And the sweetest,warmest sunshine

Comes after the storm and gloom.

Life Lessons from a Butterfly !!!

Let go of the Past....

Trust the Future.....

Embrace Change......

Come out of the cocoon....

Unfurl your wings.....

Dare to get off the ground....

Ride the Breeze.....

Savor the flowers....

Let your beauty show ......."

Patience isn't something I am great at, but I am trying. This picture is a sincere reminder that patiences does pay off. I have been looking for an opportunity to take lightning pictures over Lake Michigan for 9 years. I finally got my chance the other night, just to watch the storms die right before my eyes. In nearly 500 shots for a few hours on the lake I got 2 with lightning and this was one of them. If that wasn't enough of a life lesson, this was the only lightning the pop up "shower" produced. The storm only had one lightning strike and it was a spectacular double-strike. If you only have one shot in life, one chance, one opportunity, anything is possible with God's help. At first, I thought I wasted a night's sleep for one decent picture...but perhaps it was also a life lesson that was much more valuable. Picture was taken in Michigan city, IN on June 15th, 2013. July 2013 photo of the month.

Life lesson....White Castle is garbage.

What a difference a week makes. Returned to this amazing sunflower field about a week after it was flush with yellow petals and swarming photographers to find it nearly empty of life. Lesson learned: just when you think it's the right time, it's already too late. Oh well, there's always next year :)

There is not much cuter than burrowing owl babies ... and I feel that I short-changed my images of these cuties this year. Most of it was due to being away more than normal during those few months that they grow up.

So as I writing the recent blog on the burrowing owls, I realized that there were so many other images to share and that warm feeling towards them came back to me, so I thought that I would share.

The life of a burrowing owl growing up is a busy one ... and an entertaining one for those who care to spend some time with them and watch their youth play out before your eyes. This particular burrow consisted of the parents and 5 owlets, so the adults were quite busy ... getting food for themselves and their young, cleaning the house in the burrow, playing with their offspring, standing guard from any potential threats, issuing the call for burrow retreat, as well as disciplining their young if needed.

With so many young ones, sometimes the older of the chicks will step up and offer some life lessons to their younger burrow-mates. As they learn to play, to fly, to balance (a personal favorite of mine), to go after a potential meal, to scan the skies overhead, and other activities, they also take the time to share in some of the affection giving and bonding too.

When I visit the burrows alone, I wonder what others who might see me. I sit there very still and observe them ... OK, I laugh a lot along the way too ... and take images when my mind becomes aware of the fact that I have gotten lost in the moment of joy in watching them executing their adorable antics. LOL

Some people long for the spring season when the blossoms emerge and a new beginning starts, but I long for the return of those fuzzy headed comedians to finally pop up and being the process of discovery. It's the best therapy that I know.

Thanks for stopping by to view and especially for sharing your thoughts and comments.

One of three new pieces I will debut at WonderGround Gallery on Saturday February 1st 2014. I'll be there Feb 1-2 from 2-5 both days. Come say hello - jmaruyama.com/blog/2014/01/22/life-lessons-from-princesses/

For the title, I wanted to conjure up some pretentious rubbish with a life lesson for laughs but meh. oh wait; Don't delete old shots with decent composition; one day you'll figure how to use them. Yeah that'll do lol The first time shot under this bridge has worked for me and another step up in b/w processing.

... pay no attention to the pesky "weeds" in the garden,

there will always be those popping up,

much better to focus on all the pretty flowers.

“Of course it’s not fair. This is a street fight, kid. You’re trying to end the fight as fast as you can, and you’re trying to teach anyone that messes with you a lesson. There’s no cheating here. There’s just laying on the ground spitting out teeth, or walking away laughing. You want to put the guy down, and make it memorable, really fuck their shit- Ah, crap. Sorry about the language kid, I keep forgetting you’re.. how old are you again?”

“I’m twelve.”

“Geez yeah, twelve. Maybe I shouldn’t have showed you that stuff with the brick..”

“It’s fine sir, you have been very instructive. This was really great. My ride is here so I have to go, but I hope I can come back and learn more from you. will you be here next week?”

“Yeah, sure, I’m here most days, kid.” The boy paid the man triple what he asked for, thanked him again and walked to the waiting limousine.

“Did you learn anything valuable, Master Bruce?”

“I did, Alfred,” the boy replied, his eyes narrowing. “I learned there are no rules.”

Vito's Life Lessons

Week 40/52

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain...

---------------

I saw these hay bales on the way to a cool beach spot that a friend told me about. I couldn't resist trying for a photo. The moody clouds in the background totally made the photo. I love the way it turned out. My beach photos paled in comparison!

Dear friend,

Here are some lessons I’ve learned living in Hanoi:

1. YOU DON’T NEED MUCH MONEY TO BE HAPPY

The apartment Cindy and I currently live in only costs $380 USD a month.

All my worldly possessions that I need (laptop, headphones, Ricoh GR II) fit inside my backpack.

I wear the same outfit everyday.

Life is simple. Why do we make it so complicated?

I think the purpose of life is to create art, and to share that art with others, to empower, uplift, inspire, or connect with them.

If we have enough to feed ourselves, to pay rent, and money for transportation, what else do we need money for?

2. APPRECIATING YOUR LOVED ONES BACK HOME

The only thing I miss about America is my friends, family, and loved ones.

To remember to photograph our loved ones. To photograph death; realizing that we should photograph our loved ones while they’re (still) alive.

3. NEVER STOP HUSTLING

If we’re not growing; we are dying. We need to grow, advance, to evolve, and to become the best versions of ourselves.

In order to uplift the souls of others.

CONCLUSION

That is how I could distill my life lessons living here in Hanoi: the importance of focusing on your creative work, the importance of being close to loved ones, and to never stop learning.

Thank you for always being with me on my journey.

This is our next steps:

- After 1 month (left here in Hanoi), move down to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in the south of Vietnam.

- Spend a few months in Saigon

- Move to France

- Live in Paris/Marseille for several months

- Cindy is done with her research — then time for her to start writing her dissertation

- Spend 1-2 years writing dissertation somewhere abroad (maybe Paris)

- Move back home to California (probably Cindy’s family’s house in Garden Grove)

- I’ll keep you in the loop with everything.

Thank you thank you thank you, for supporting me and @hapticindustries in this journey of life together.

Be strong,

Eric

A young boy feeding grains to pigeons at Gangaur Ghat, next to Lake Pichola, in Udaipur.

While tourists who were disturbing the birds to take pictures were rudely shooed away by locals, no one said anything to this boy who - in his enthusiasm to feed the pigeons - walked straight into them. Sometimes it's to do with intent, not the action.

Actually, we called him Daddy .....never "Father, Dad, or Pops." Those names did not seem to fit him. He was our leader, our example, our provider--definitely the man of the house. I have few tangible reminders of Daddy, but many great memories and life lessons learned. I recently picked up this old booklet entitled simply "Time". He used this and similar books to record his hours worked (primarily in construction) and to calculate his weekly wages. Times were hard back then, but Daddy managed to raise 7 children on meager wages. We never seemed to lack necessities. What we lacked in "extras" was made up many times over with love and nurturing.

Happy Fathers Day, Daddy.

This is based on a drawing that I did about three years ago, that I entitled "Stressed out" and I think a few of you have seen it. It feels really nice to come back to an old idea and try to re-do it. Especially when you know how you felt at the time. I still remember how I did...

Everything felt like it was pulling me. But not just pulling, pulling in all directions. Back then I thought it was just my age, but now I know that it was...life. It doesn't get any easier. Things will always be tugging at you. But ah, there will always be more than one thing. And sometimes, it's hard. Especially when you don't know how to juggle what you have in your hands. And even if you do, there will always be something that will knock you down, and give you that feeling of being overwhelmed with all these responsibilities.

This piece was created by using about 10 separate pictures and putting them together in photoshop. I have been loving photoshop for my conceptual shoots these days.

Thank you so much to Sarah and Megumi for helping me create this image!!! You are both so amazing!

Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

We are taught growing up not to stare at people and things whose appearance is removed from the expected or the norm, and not to snicker at or find pleasure in that odd appearance.

I grant permission to discard all your childhood life lessons and revel in the oddity that is this variety of fruit fly. Both males and females have the stalked eye morphology (yes, those are their eyes at the ends of those appendages), but in the males it is ridiculously exaggerated. The span from eyeball to eyeball in this case is around 35mm (1 1/3 inches).

Jay Clark and I were just hanging out waiting for work when a friend of ours girlfriend walked up and told us her custom Davidson was just stolen.

We told her we'd radio some other guys to keep an eye out.

Minutes later Jay and I rode over a few streets to get some work and a we see this crack head rolling down the sidewalk on a bike way too small for him.

As he rides by we see it's her bike.

At the last second Jay tackled him.

I got over him and took him out again as Jay took the bike back.

He didn't know what was going on.

And couldn't believe he went from riding a bike to being on the ground with two dudes standing over in seconds.

He explained he found it in an alley pretty much in tears.

But really he stole it from her works alley entrance.

Some other words were exchanged and he ended up apologizing and asking us not to call the cops.

We told him to get the fuck out of here and told him not to steal bikes and if we catch him again it's gonna be a lot worse.

We gave him a life lesson on what happens when you steal a bike and messengers find out.

There are 40 of us with radios and bike knowledge on every street in downtown.

Do they really expect to get away with this kinda shit???

I called Marie up and took the bike up the hill and hand delivered it.

She couldn't have been more happy.

She really lucked out!!!

On my 5th day of observation, I saw a parent kite fly to the feeding tree with a cicada but there were no babies waiting for snacks. The parent took off again just as Brother arrived. Brother was too late; the parent flew off with food still clutched in one foot. Hopefully life lesson learned, you snooze, you lose.

My last impression and point of view from 2016. A difficult year for many, but also a useful one for those being tought by hard moments & able to get life lessons. Happy 2017!

Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.

Gold is precious nowadays since currency value is depreciating. Even a government can default on payment or print money notes as they wish and people will have very little confidence on the paper bills.

Autumn gold is precious too. If you are in the autumn of your life and want to show off the gold to others, what will it be?

Will it be the wealth you have earned, your career, your friendship, your amazing stories of life (like the movie Big Fish), your faith in human nature or your creative art of photography?

This is golden maples seen in Van Dusen Garden last weekend.

Happy Tuesday to you!
