Vito's Life Lessons

Week 45/52

Snow is Awesome. Unless it's Yellow

Vito loves snow, rolling in it, eating it, fetching it, bouncing through it. He thinks it's pretty wonderful!

...when the sun sets...that will be enough to keep me satisfied...life lessons.

While the rest of the manatee have headed out into the St. John's, or ventured into the Gulf by now, this Cow and Calf have returned to the shelter of the spring run.

I don't really speak manatee squeak, but I figure mom is saying:

"Now that's your sit-on-top tandem kayak up there, you don't really have to worry about those... they make a little splash when those goofy looking things paddle them around."

Female Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus) glancing at the camera while flying over my head (~5-7 m) at the car park at Rogerstown. Perfect light and outstanding range.

The image is marred from somebody changing the setting of the camera minutes before I took this photograph without me realising in time. A life lesson, always check your camera settings as though you are about to get closer to an elusive and rare bird of prey than you will ever in your lifetime.

"honey, the world owes you nothing"

hard life lesson's to learn.

The sweathouse--a small place where the talk was big. Huge stories, great memories, life lessons. In the heat, in the dark, the fragrant vapors of the kowsch root steam. Sweating into the pine boughs on the floor. Far away in time and space, and yet always right there--a dream, an idea, a seed planted in my heart and rooted into my spirit.

Young men sometimes grow up much faster than they should and they see things that make this happen. Long ago, a 19 year old found these truths to be real and during a short stay abroad, learned valuable life lessons that haunted him through the rest of his life. During his short visit to a foreign seaport, he came away with memories that helped to shape him as a man, a son, a husband, a father and I imagine, helped him in his long career of work.

Moving forward twenty years, two brothers were playing with rocks they found in the back of their dad's desk. Laughing and carrying on as nine and ten year olds do, they made a lot of ruckus as they played with the rocks. After a short while, their dad came into the room and saw what the boys were doing. "You are never allowed to touch my stuff" he raged.....then proceeded to spank both of the boys very hard. Amid tears, the boys ran off.

Twenty five years went by again and during a Christmas visit, the dad, sons and other family members got together for celebration. This time of the year is always so special. Well, at some point one of the sons asked his dad if he remembered the spanking incident from 25 years before. The dad bowed his head and thought for a moment. When he looked up, he had tears in his eyes. Everyone was quiet, not knowing what was going on. Then dad then said that he had regretted the spankings, but "they were in order", he said. Then he mentioned that the rocks we were playing with were not rocks. He said, "they were memories of what can never happen again".

The rocks that my brother and I were playing with were small human bones.

They were from Nagasaki, Japan.

My dad was a medical corpsman on a troop transport ship that arrived to this once lovely seaport soon after the atomic bomb laid waste to the city. The bones were found by my 19 year old dad as he and his shipmates wandered through the carnage of a once bustling and beautiful city. He told me of the the sick and walking dead.

Tough memories.

Ultimately, the atomic bombs ended World War II against Japan. Many innocents paid the price for war. Many suffered. My dad, saw what he saw and it allowed him to grow into a man. He was a great dad and a had a highly successful civic minded career of helping others. When my dad passed over six years ago, I visited him on his death bed just hours before he passed away. I thanked him for being a loving dad and I apologized to him for my youthful blunders......including my stone tossing play with my brother.

Now, I have eight small bones from Japan, of someone, or people, young or old, male or female that are in my care. I have decided that they will be a part of the Sol Duc forest in the Olympics. They will find peace and quiet with ancient trees and moving water near. Solitude and joy will be a part of their long days ahead.

I hope they like my place for them, for someday, I will join them and perhaps we will become friends.

Such is my story on this day......

...to make a smiley face.

Life sure is hard for Peter Parker. Every triumph has an equally attributed loss, every battle a dire consequence. For our hero Peter Parker, this is a life lesson learned the hard way. Every day. If there's one thing we can say, it's that it's certainly not easy being Spider-man...

~Life Lessons Brought to you By A Flat-Coat~

It was 1am in the morning during a snowsquall and I just couldn't wait for the storm to pass, (who wants crummy old dirty snow pictures?). Hard to have a steady hand when you're frozen to the core so I ended up with black pictures and exposed them in Lightroom when I got home. (Life Lesson #1. Bring your tripod.) :)

See inside for the full fight!

A neighbor left this sign on her front porch last week.

"To the person who stole my son's pumpkin:

Thank you for the life lesson. This will teach him that sometimes people are mean for no reason and you have to just brush it off.

Because my son is 2-yrs-old and cannot read this sign, I will add:

You are an a------."

I'm thinking about starting up a project called "Life: 101"

It's basically illustrated life lessons.

Kelley has a book on it, and I really wanted to do my own version with different life lessons.

so these photos are kinda the begining. :)

Butterflies can teach us so much about change, growth and embracing our best selves.

Let your inner butterfly dance upon the breeze with these life lessons.

Let go of the past

Trust your future

Embrace the change

Come out of the cocoon

Unfurl your wings

Dare to get off the ground

Ride the breezes

Savour the flowers

Put on your brightest colors

Let your beauty show

Don't cry over spilled milk.

For an assignment for school, we had to do an indoor off camera flash assignment with a speedlite and obviously get creative with it, so I came up with this obvious concept. A very literal version of the saying don't cry over spilled milk :D The purpose of the assignment was to properly expose the subject while underexposing the background to create a dramatic lighting effect.

One day my photography friend was discussing with me about Buddhism and photography. He mentioned one of the popular Zen Buddhist teachings in the following verse. It describes the three levels of learning in Zen Buddhist teaching.

Level 1: Seeing mountain as mountain, seeing water as water.

Level 2: Seeing mountain NOT as mountain, seeing water NOT as water.

Level 3: Seeing mountain STILL as mountain, seeing water STILL as water.

We recognize that the same analogy applies to photographic learning process too.

At the very beginning, we are snap shooters. Everything in the world is interesting and they are just what they are. Mountains as mountain and water as water.

Once you are more experienced and learned, you see the scenes as a display of tones, colors, shapes, lines, textures and other compositional elements (e.g. frames etc). Therefore mountains NOT as mountains anymore, water NOT as water anymore.

When you move up to next level of learning, then all the compositional elements are serving you as tools of expression. Mountains STILL as mountains, water STILL as water.

I think this is the stage most difficult to be described.

It reminds me the words of Diane Arbus.

“The thing that’s most important to know is that you never know. You’ve always sort of feeling your way.” - Diane Arbus

I guess I was still in level 2 and seeing things as textures, tones and shapes when I took this picture with my compact camera during my Canadian Rockies trip.

It was taken at a small creek near Bow Lake. I always like to shoot scenes that people could not identify the location. You may say this is somewhere in Vancouver!!

Happy Monday and happy week ahead!

This is me in my closet showing off all my thrift store finds (Savers is the best thrift store). I never realized how much clothes I had from there until now!

With the image I'd also like to share a little life lesson, popularity doesn't mean S#%@ once you leave highschool and enter the real world. I wasn't at all popular in school but now I'm happy and happily married with two dogs and my husband and I are 22 and 24 we our own house, I've run into some of the more popular girls I went to school with and you know what their not any better off or happier than I am, in fact some of them are worse off. Hope this gives hope to any teens out there who feel like they're a nobody just because their not popular, once you graduate no one will care about what you wear, what music you listen to, the time you dropped your tray in the cafeteria, got stuffed into a trash can (true story) or made the mistake of cutting your own hair and who knows maybe one day you'll be happier than them too.

Finally got my camera back ...took it for a little spin to a fountain that the kids love to play in and caught this little life lesson in progress .

Vada loves to AROO at people! can be funny but then it can be annoying xD But she looks cute when she does it!

So I have learned a life lesson today about the person who gossips to you will gossip about you! so don't trust anyone! lol

i wish i could use this for her 52 week project because this is SO her but I'll think of something better :]

-Looks are not everything

-Probe deeper for the truth

-Family is important

-Take time to feel the air flow beneath your wings

-Rogaine only sometimes works

My superbly talented actress friend, Cassie Bradley, in 'Every You Every Me", written by Barney Norris and directed by David Mercatali, at Salisbury Playhouse. This is from March last year.

The play was about reality, mental health, exam results, Kurt Cobain...and the provision of mental health services for young people.

Cassie is currently appearing in the National Theatre production, "Husbands and Sons" which is currently at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.

2024 vacation in Vancouver, Canada.

As we pulled up to the school drop-off lane in the Audi R8 and the 5th grade greeters fought over who would open the door to let my 6 year-old son out, my son said, “These kids must think my life is awesome because I come to school in three cool cars.” I explained to my little kindergartner that even if we didn’t have those 3 vehicles, his life is still awesome. He said, “Yeah.”

This was probably one of the most heart-warming sightings we had in our recent trip to Africa. It was the dry season and the rains weren't expected until November. This riverbed had no water but the elephants knew which spots had water close to the surface so they could have a drink. This mother was teaching her baby how to dig underground for water. Taken in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. Another photo is in the comment box.

Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.
