I love this little dog to bits. Even when he's naughty. He's the dog always at my feet, on my lap, snuggling in the morning. He's a pretty special guy.

Life Lesson #1

If you don't have anything nice to say,

keep your mouth full.

LIFE LESSONS I HAVE LEARNED:

A truly crazy person can make a sane person feel crazy....and yes, unfortunately I have come across a few crazies in my life! The beauty of maturity is knowing when to walk away and free ones soul of negativity. Life is just to darn short to be around others who fail to appreciate it! I now live for myself, so that I have more to give to others. There is no pleasing everyone no matter how hard you try. Just don't forget to smile even when it hurts! :)

Projeto Paisagem - Vik Muniz - Rio+20

Vik Muniz projected on the ground a photograph that he made of Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro) from the Mirante Dona Marta, in Botafogo. And had the collaboration of the public that included their recyclable materials as plastic bottles, tetra pack cartons and aluminum cans in the picture until the design was completed with 65x60 ft. It was 1.3 ton of trash.

Born in São Paulo in 1961, Muniz has made a name for himself in the art world with his characteristic style of creating images using non-art materials. His works have included creations made from thread, wire, cotton, chocolate syrup, caviar, used computer parts and ripped magazine pages. He then photographs them, preserving the image of the work for display.

Life sure is hard for Peter Parker. Every triumph has an equally attributed loss, every battle a dire consequence. For our hero Peter Parker, this is a life lesson learned the hard way. Every day. If there's one thing we can say, it's that it's certainly not easy being Spider-man...

Doraemon (ドラえもん) Totally pinched from Wikipedia comes this explanation for the uninitiated:

Doraemon was awarded the Japan Cartoonists Association Award for excellence in 1973. Doraemon was awarded the first Shogakukan Manga Award for children's manga in 1982, and the first Osamu Tezuka Culture Award in 1997. In March 2008, Japan's Foreign Ministry appointed Doraemon as the nation's first "anime ambassador." Ministry spokesman explained the novel decision as an attempt to help people in other countries to understand Japanese anime better and to deepen their interest in Japanese culture." The Foreign Ministry action confirms that Doraemon has come to be considered a Japanese cultural icon. In 2002, the anime character was acclaimed as an Asian Hero in a special feature survey conducted by Time Asia magazine.

These items are from around 1998-1999 so not as easy to find anymore.

Included in this picture is a Doraemon Japanese Pencil Board (shitajiki -- 下敷き, literally under-sheet aka pencil board). Shitajiki are traditionally used to protect the surface underneath the paper from soak-through (which was an issue with calligraphy paint and rice paper) and from pen/pencil pressure. This one is an unusual shape being die-cut which makes it extra special, if not as useful.

More Shitajiki/Pencil Boards here.

Next to the pencil board is a character shaped package of printed gum while underneath is packages of Doraemon gum. The packaged stick gum is not boring either as seen in this random blog post (the ones above are unopened but it's a good bet the wrappers are similar).

On the bottom is a Furikake packet that comes in groups of 20 in a Furikake package as seen in green foil next to the packet (though flattened). More packets from the furikake package can be seen in the next picture. I'm sure, as is usual for character foods there was a premium with this but I can't remember what it was and it seems to have been separated from the rest, possibly long gone. UPDATE: Premium found, it is a scratch-off card (unscratched) and will be in a photo soon to come.

And on the right is a box of Doraemon character band-aids/bandages that can be seen out and unfolded. Stylish!

More Plasters.

More Doraemon FUN here.

These (and more) need a new home as I'm going to a different country for an extended stay soon so send me a Flickr Mail message (access through the arrow that appears near my profile photo when mousing over it) if interested.

PEPPERMINT LOUNGE

NEW YORK CITY

1965 was the year I graduated from high school.

It was also the first time I took a trip WITHOUT my parents! Our high school class trip was to the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, New York.

That’s me second from the left on the bottom left photo.

The 1964/1965 New York World's Fair held over 140 pavilions, 110 restaurants, for 80 nations (hosted by 37), 24 U.S. states and over 45 corporations and remains a touchstone for many Baby Boomers who visited the optimistic fair as children, before the turbulent years of the Vietnam War and many cultural changes such as increasing domestic violence associated with the Civil Rights Movement.

However, this story is about another trip I took to New York City later that year. When I graduated from high school dad told me to get a job or he was going to throw me out of the house. Don't know if mom would let him but I didn't want to take the chance.

So my high school friend John R and I traveled around by bus applying for employment at various places. Now let me tell you about John R, a.k.a. “Roz". He was my best friend in high school and we played on the Junior Varsity and Varsity soccer team together.

I was the goalie (with the circle) and Roz is fourth from the right in the back row.

We applied with the Philadelphia Electric Company, the Philadelphia Gas Company, Frank’s Beverages (founded by Jacob Frank in 1885 ) and Sears.

Sears called me and I started working in their warehouse as a catalog order picker in the automotive supply section on July 5, 1965. This was my first full time forty hour per week job and I was hired in at a minimum wage that was $1.25 per hour at that time.

Working for Sears in 1965.

Luckily for me, dad drove past Sears going to work every day so I rode with him in the morning and he would pick me up on his way home. That was fine until I started night school in September at Spring Garden Technical Institute, which was located near downtown Philadelphia, for a mechanical drawing diploma. It was at Spring Garden, which was established in 1851 , that I would see a microwave oven for the first time in 1965.

On school nights, two nights during the week, dad would drop me off at Sears and after work I would take public transportation, a combination of bus then subway, to school. Classes were from 6 pm to 10 pm. I would get home about 11 pm from school using the elevated rail called the “El" and riding a bus.

Here are two stories from riding public transportation in Philly. I would leave work at 5 pm, take a bus and then catch the Broad Street subway (which opened September 1928 ) to school. When I would come up the stairs to the street level from the same exit each night there was a man wearing dark sunglasses selling pencils from a tin cup. It appeared that he was blind. Maybe I threw some change into the cup some nights and maybe I didn't. I had seen him twice a week from September to December. But get this. One of the first “Life Lessons” I would learn – Things are not what they always appear to be! One night I walked up the steps from the subway exit and as I walked past this man I nodded my head at him to acknowledge his presence. Guess what? He nodded back! Well I thought everybody needs a “con" and he certainly had a good one going for him so why blow his cover. This of course was one of the first coming of age lessons on the streets and there would be many more in the next few years.

The second story is certainly not a “Life Lesson” but a good story nevertheless. Coming home late at night I really didn't want to eat a large meal before going to bed so I would have a beef pot pie and a glass of Hawaiian Punch. I really enjoyed this meal and this is what I ate each night after school for two years. BTW, this meal will appear in a future story because I had told this story so many times to people I met.

Traveling on public transportation took a long time as both the bus and rail cars would make stops every few minutes to allow passengers to get on and off.

I needed a car. So I started to save what money I could from my weekly paycheck that cleared about $40.00 after taxes. The agreement with mom was I would give her 25% of my net pay which left me with nearly $30.00 each week to spend or save. My goal was to buy a car on my 18th birthday in November.

On my 18th birthday I had saved a total of $200 dollars and my friend Darryl C drove me to a used car dealer not far from where I lived. We found a 1956 Buick that cost $200. Not wanting to look like this was the first time I bought a car I asked the salesman what was my guarantee and without missing a beat he replied “Son, I guarantee it will drive off this lot!”

I had my guarantee so I gave him $200 in cash (at 18 I knew nothing about having a checking account since I didn’t have any bills to pay) and I now had my first car that I could drive to work and school.

With my first car – a 1956 Buick.

Don't ask me about auto insurance either because I do not remember but I did have it. But more importantly for me I now had the means to travel on my own, without my parents, and I certainly was not going to drive to Wilson, North Carolina or Shamokin, Pennsylvania!

For anyone who was 18 years old and living near New York City THAT was the place to be since legal drinking age at that time was 18 and guess who was now 18!

I asked my friend Darryl C and his friend Lexie G if they wanted to go to New York City with me one Saturday night and they both said yes.

Of course we didn't know anything about New York City except I did listened to Joey Dee & the Starliters sing “Peppermint Twist” which hit #1 on the Billboard U.S. Chart in 1961 so the Peppermint Lounge was our destination.

We left Philly early one evening and drove north on U.S. Route 1 which is a major north-south U.S. highway that serves the East Coast of the Unites States.

It runs 2,369 miles (3,813 km) from Fort Kent, Maine near the Canadian - US border south to Key West, Florida making it the longest north-south road in the United States. I have always wanted to drive the entire length of this road but have not done so to date. Maybe one day?

The 45 rpm of “Peppermint Twist” by Joey Dee & the Starliters

On the way to New York City we stopped at a gas station that night in Princeton, New Jersey and the three of us bought Coca-Cola in bottles from a vending machine that was outside the building. The gas station was closed and we didn't think anything about it at that time.

Not sure exactly which month we made this trip but it was a cold winter day and it did get colder during the night. Snowflakes started to fall. We arrived in Manhattan, parked and started to walk around. It was near freezing and all three of us had our heavy winter coats on. We seen a U.S. Marine walking without any jacket on and thought he was one tough dude. Asking directions to the Peppermint Lounge we found our way there, parked once again, and went inside.

Whenever I’m walking in freezing weather I always think about how tough United States Marines are.

The Peppermint Lounge was a popular discotheque located at 128 West 45th Street. When the Twist craze hit in 1960 to 1961 celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn, Truman Capote, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Liberace, Frank Sinatra, Norman Mailer, Annette Funicello and even the elusive Greta Garbo would be there to listen and dance to the house band – Joey Dee & the Starliters.

But when Darryl C, Lexie G and I arrived “in the Winter of‘65” (sorry Joan Baez) it was a dump. We drank a few beers and went back to the car to drive home. By then about four inches of snow was on the ground but I knew we would be safe since that 1956 Buick was built like a tank and just about as heavy as one!

Driving back home I experience a strange occurrence that I never experience before or since. When I pushed the brake pedal down the pedal didn't move back up when I removed my foot. I'm following the existing tire tracks in the now six inches of snow on the road and I realized the brakes have frozen. Thus I tried to time the traffic lights so I wouldn't have to stop. There was little traffic during this winter storm but when I did have to stop I would put both feet under the brake pedal and pull it back up. We did make it home safe and sound.

A few days later my parents received a phone call from the New Jersey State Police and wanted to speak with me. Gulp! What had I done? Seems as if that gas station we stopped at in Princeton was robbed Saturday night and someone had written my license plate number and gave it to the police. I told the police what we did and why we stopped and nothing else ever became of this.

I wish I had adequate words to describe how grateful I am that Owen will grow up watching a father who has found his passion and pursues it with all that he is...what an amazing thing for a little boy to witness firsthand.

(Happy Father's Day, Zeb. I am so glad Owen has you for his Dad.)

Life lessons on a grave in Melbourne General Cemetery. Easy to miss if you are walking past in a rush. Hard to forget once you have paused to bend down and read the words.

I learnt an important life lesson today. 'Does a bell make a sound if no-one is there to hear it?' Well the riddle is unravelled...

Should you find yourself cycling up a long and steep hill, lycra-clad, lobster-pink and not a little sweaty, then you really are going to look like a total plank if you reach the top of that slope to be greeted by two young ladies (when I say greeted, what I really mean is gawped at with disdain), to then find yourself accidentally ringing your bell, rather than changing gear. Honestly, the two levers are right next to each other!

It highlights quite clearly how one thing can be interpreted in vastly different ways: on the one hand "who does he think he is? Riding up that hill and announcing what a stellar athlete he is with a 'bing'! What a fat, sweaty, idiot!" and the other "gah, why did I ring my bell, right then? What a fat, sweaty idiot!" Oh hang on, those are actually quite similar...

I've also learnt that my cat has no idea what work is, of course she's not particularly employable (unless there's a vacancy for someone who likes lying around on a cushion having their tummy tickled, whilst being fed scraps of smoked salmon) but she also has no idea about my work either. I work from home sometimes and she believes that this is for her benefit. I regularly take part in important conference calls and she thinks it's quite apt to leap up and miaow into the mouth piece, quite suddenly and before I can activate the mute button. My colleagues already consider me eccentric but mewing and animal noises, perhaps go beyond that simple description. She also thinks there's enough room on my lap for a lapcat and a laptop. There really isn't.

I've been struggling for ages to pin down what art is, what its whys and whens actually are, or at least what its direction of travel actually takes you towards.

I then saw a quote, new to me but surely well-known and famous: 'Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced.' -Leo Tolstoy

Like a flea jumping about all over the place and suddenly pinned down with a thumb, this phrase had it all, like walking full-force into a door.

It seems like we are all on a quest to connect things together, to see the joins that were not visible before. Art is simply one expression of that journey we all share.

In anything we do, we want to do it better and more succintly, to use that momentum to drive us to understand, whatever it is, just that little bit more each time that we try.

So surely art is no different from simply being alive and travelling in a forwards direction, it is nothing more than a way to describe that journey, like a simple page in a diary or a snap of a happy day on the beach.

As we live life we make connections between seemingly disparate things, and discover they were actually joined together all along. And now I think that good, great and exceptional art helps you make those connections in your head, as the artist reveals all those links they discovered within themselves and distilled them into blobs of paint or whatever medium is their choice of expression.

Or perhaps:-

"Dog sculptor, how do you sculpt this enormous block of stone?"

"I just take away all the bits that aren't dog."

Because of these things I aspire to paint. I've probably mentioned it before. Great painting, for me, seems to distill so much more than any other medium I've witnessed.

Emotion, narrative, sorrow, symbolism, joy and so much more condensed into something that does not require a plaque to tell you what to think. Line, form and colour, skillfully applied, to convey so much depth and description. I don't know if that is at all possible with other mediums, and especially not with mine.

That doesn't mean I am not going to try, as I mature and learn and grow, my art comes along with me and I want to strive forward to reach a point when my art begins to draw together much more, will make you think, ponder and contemplate. After all these are the things that make me tick, make me feel alive, drive me to learn and develop and evolve. And just like great painting I want my art to grow strong and not need a written description, it should explain whatever it needs to, to whoever wants to look at it and let each person take away whatever they wish.

Perhaps it is a confidence thing. To have enough of it to let it speak for itself. Perhaps that will come with maturity and the time to make more connections between whatever disparate things I find.

What is life without drive and fascination and a journey with which to set yourself on? Whether I ever reach there, who knows, but it is assured you never will, if you put don't put one foot in front of the other.

I made this for my exhibition and it's been there for a few weeks now. I haven't seen it since but my partner said they've dried, cracked and grown a little mould. She added they looked pretty good too :-). Drop into the gallery if you are passing by and let me know how they are changing.

My self-confidence doesn't allow me to keep quiet (ahem, as if you hadn't noticed) but perhaps it will one day soon. But I believe there's a few layers to see here and I'll stop and leave it at that. Except to say that I put them in with no conscious effort and it was revealed gradually afterwards.

Despite not planning their inclusion, I still believe they are manifestly there and I am beginning to learn the power of intuition and, too, of the unconscious mind.

A few years ago I was unaware of those things but maybe they are all a fundamental part of the whole maturing process.

So that one day I may find the confidence, to speak without any words.

Too many life lessons for a little girl today. She's exhausted ;)

You may have thought I didn't see,

Or that I hadn't heard,

Life lessons that you taught to me,

But I got every word.

Perhaps you thought I missed it all,

And that we'd grow apart,

But Dad, I picked up everything,

It's written on my heart.

Without you, Dad, I wouldn't be

The man I am today;

You built a strong foundation

No one can take away.

I've grown up with your values,

And I'm very glad I did;

So here's to you, dear father,

From your forever grateful kid.

Life lessons learned:

Life Lesson #9

You believe in something called abundance mentality, an expansive outlook that puts forth that there's plenty to go around...so we should all be open to sharing the wealth -- and serving as inspiration for others to garner wealth We should all be thinking largely and liberally.

All of this reminds you of a kind of corny story...

"Did you hear about the farmer with great ears? Each year his yummy yellow corn won blue ribbons in corn competitions. When asked his secret by a journalist, this farmer replied "I share my corn seed with all my neighbors." The journalist baffled, asked, "Huh?!?!" The farmer smiled and explained: "It's like this..the wind picks up pollen from ripening corn and cross-polinates it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, they lower the quality of my corn. Meaning if I want to greedily grow the best-est corn ever, I must help my neighbors grow their best-est corn too."

You know the kernel of wisdom in this story: We're all connected. What's good for you is good for everyone. If you live with abundance mentality then you will indirectly (as well as oft times directly) help others to live with abundance too.

(Life Lesson #9 taken from The 7 Lively Sins, how to enjoy your life, dammit)

B.W. Webb hosts his third annual Seven Cities Football Camp from Woodside High School in Newport News Virginia. It wasn’t very hard to spot B.W. Webb because the Tennessee Titans cornerback and former William and Mary standout couldn’t stop smiling and/or dancing.

With the early fall-like weather and the hundreds that showed up for his third annual Seven Cities Football Camp, there was plenty of reason to do both. Webb, who played at Warwick High School, welcomed more than 400 youngsters, ages 8 to 18, for a day of life lessons and football skills.

“I’m loving it, man,” said Webb, who was joined by a handful of NFL names, including Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Redskins linebacker Lynden Trail and free agent quarterback Michael Vick. “We’re just out here having a good time giving back.”

Webb, who grew up in Newport News, understands how important and impactful his mere presence can be to all of the kids hoping to follow in his footsteps. “We all grew up here and we know it’s not the easiest place to grow up,” said Webb.

“Sometimes, being a kid growing up in this area, you get caught up in the wrong things. So, we try to show them that we came up in this area. We’re doing well in our lives now, we set ourselves apart from all the bad things that was happening at the times we were growing up. So, to all the guys out here, we’re living testament that if you follow your goals, everything will work out.”

Vick was only too happy to help out his fellow Warwick alum.

“These kids deserve it,” said Vick. “We were all kids at one point and we all were inspired to become professional football players. Not everybody out here is going to make it, but we give them the hope and the inspiration and the opportunity to do so. The thing I try to instill in all of them is making sure they tackle their academics first and athletics second.”

Patrick - Age 7

Life lessons learned:

Early life lesson for the boy

As much as Mac loves his little brother, I think there was a bit of a realization as all (or at least most) of the attention was on Lennon for the day of his party. For the first time, the party wasn't for Mac, and I'm sure he was a little hurt and a little confused.

If growing up comes from learning some "life lessons", then even though it was Lennon's birthday, Mac grew up a little that day as well.

Just a small list of things I feel I had to write.

1. Remember the life lessons you know.

2. No matter how hard you try to work in a relationship, remember that you can always be let go.

3. You make mistakes in life, you go through them and try to remember the better parts of life. If you can't remember a single one, there is a whole part of life ahead to change that.

4. Being a child has its ups, being an adult has its down. The best thing to do is combine, don't be too serious, don't be too goofy. Learn to embrace every stage of life now.

5. No matter how much you want to leave, sometimes things hold you back. It is an indication that your life is not as free as you'd like to believe. Things can change, that part of your life can change.

6. I have learned that there is nothing more beautiful, no photograph, no word, no song, than the feeling of being loved. It can make a world of difference.

7. There isn't any reason to be mean to people once you've told yourself you don't like them. There isn't a purpose for it and it benefits no one.

8. Despite your political beliefs, no candidate is better, smarter or more deserving. They are humans too, they are you and I and they live in the same communities and cities and states we do. They don't make you better smarter or more deserving simply because you side with them.

9. There is no such thing as peace, everything is a war, a fight, or a struggle. Peace is a thought, an ideal theory. Without the war the fights or the struggle you will lack the concept of how beautiful the world can be when people come together to try and destroy those three ugly words. Peace is a struggle, it is a war and it is a fight. Struggle with it, Fight for it and raise a war for it.

10. There is always going to be someone better at something you love to do. You are not them, your life is not here to try and achieve same status or surpass that person. You are here to be yourself and make some sort of dent in this world as your own.

11. We are ALL connected in some way. Blood, Friends, Family, there is no need to try and seperate one another. If you believe in a God then you should know we all had the same man and woman roam this earth. If you believe in something else then you should know that it only takes one person. That person can be connected to us all.

12. Learn to respect and speak out when you feel something in your heart telling you to speak out. Don't ever close your mouth simply because you are told it's inappropriate, who are other people to judge what is right and wrong when no one is perfect.

Life lessons learned:

Remember what Poli told you about your tyres and make sure of it!

2015 Victoria Pride Parade

No matter who we are, or how we dress. No matter whom we love, or the genders we identify with; we are all loved, we are all family. Victoria is invited to dress up, and play ball, or cheer-lead from the sidelines. Rules are bent, mustaches are smudged, and heels get a little dirty in a fun, sun filled afternoon celebrating diversity, and having fun.

I try to attend PRIDE events in support of a friend I owe a lot to.

Way back when, a buddy named Sam Evans befriended me, in spite of my red neck and ignorance, and his patience delivered me from a life of hate and homophobia. We lost him to AIDS back in 1988 - but I will never forget his friendship and the life lessons he taught me.

I'll be forty in forty days and about a month ago I thought, "Hey, I'll do a photo countdown the forty days leading up to my birthday. You know. And stuff."

Then I forgot about it until I looked in my notebook yesterday and realized I had about 10 hours before I was to start this awesome idea.

Except, I had no idea what the awesome idea would be.

So instead, I took this photo and started thinking about all the lessons I've learned in my 349, 498 (sort of accurate) hours of being alive and decided my awesome plan didn't have to be huge and grandiose as 10 hours is not enough time for grandiose unless you're Oprah.

So this is it. I took a photo and it reminded me of a lesson I learned when I was still sleeping in a crib (taking into account that I slept in a crib until I was 5):

Never poop in the tub while your older sister is in it. While you may forget it and there will be no lasting damage done to your delicate psyche, your poor sister will never forget and will take pleasure in reminding you of it at every other major family get together.

And it's just gross.

(I will admit some of these life lessons might be on the weak side. But still important in their own small way.)
