I try to attend PRIDE events in support of a friend I owe a lot to.
Way back when, a buddy named Sam Evans befriended me, in spite of my red neck and ignorance, and his patience delivered me from a life of hate and homophobia. We lost him to AIDS back in 1988 - but I will never forget his friendship and the life lessons he taught me.
if only we could all live authentically...follow our passions from childhood, and become the people who we are meant to be...
EVERYBODY HAS A CALLING
it seems my son's has to do with trucks and cars and vehicles of every kind...
been busy with life and of course the lifeclass.. thank you everyone for your kind comments..if you care to listen anymore, i am happy to share more of the class:
so many incredible lessons last week to talk about, but i will have to sum it all up
#3 is- WE BECOME WHAT WE BELIEVE WE WILL BECOME..
this is no secret.. many masters have talked about this ..the Buddha talks about this in the Dhammapada.. "We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, We make our world."
the wake up message- pay attention to your thoughts!!! what we experience is a direct result of our beliefs..concious or unconscious
lesson #4- THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREEEEE!
oh how i know this one all too well.. if you are hiding any aspect of who you truly are, you cannot live a full and authentic life
lesson #5 JOY RISING
it is in giving that we truly recieve... nothing better than giving another joy.. JOY is Godly.. ;-) service ..service ..service ..it's true... nothing in life will give you more good feelings or satisfaction other than the feeling you get from helping others..from changing the lives of others.. motherhood & fatherhood falls into this catagory by the way ;-) that is...if you are consciously parenting
lesson #6 is EVERYBODY HAS A CALLING..be who you are meant to be...
not that you have to save the world, or make tremendous amounts of money at your calling but that you at least get to express what you are truly passionate about in some way in your life..and through your joy you will effect the world-- whether it manifests through your work, as a volunteer opportunity, or as a joyful hobby ( hello fellow flickr friends) FOLLOW YOUR BLISS!!!!!
and tonight was
#7 AGING BEAUTIFULLY
as i grow older..been thinking about this one more and more lately.. i have admitted before how much of my self worth comes from my appearance, and i know how i need to work on this... because beauty fades... but if you cultivate your inner beauty.. your heart... the true you... you can shine on..and keep shining in different and more important ways
❤

Salt is an ionic compound, made of sodium and chloride atoms (NaCl). When a number of these molecules get together to form a crystal, they tend to arrange themselves in a cubic pattern. As a result, the salt crystals are also cubic. The ones that aren’t were the elder crystals rounded by ordinary surround friction. There is a life lesson there! 😃 Wisdom! #salt #NaOH #macro #naturephotography #chemistry #microscope #geometry #iphonemacrochallenge #lifelessons #wisdom #visualwisdom #science #nacl

Life Lesson #1:
Never let your “friends” talk you into doing something stupid. WHY? They aren't really your friends and, if you listen, not only is what they want you to do stupid, but so are you.
Be your own person even if it means standing alone and away from the herd...oops…crowd.

Todd Shea is the founder of Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) a Pakistan-based charity also registered in the US. Todd is a singer, musician and a songwriter who has traveled all over the World performing his music. Todd got his inspiration to play music during the dark teen age years he went through after his mother’s death. The difficult times that Todd experienced in his early years taught him many life lessons, and he developed strong feelings towards humanity and the desire to help people harmed by tragedy. Todd eventually began to use music to share his experiences and convey a healing message to help troubled teenagers to get through their own hard times.
On 9/11, Todd never knew that his life would take such a drastic change and he would find abilities which he wasn't even aware of before the unfortunate event which affected the entire World and destroyed thousands of families. Todd had been visiting New York for a musical concert but instead put his guitar down to respond to the tragedy he witnessed from his hotel room window. Since then Todd has been directly involved in many disasters, providing logistics and operational support.
Todd has been working with and supporting many missions and organizations responding to disasters. Todd’s experiences include volunteering after the disastrous tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2005 and in the same year he worked as a logistics coordinator and animal rescuer during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. He then worked to deploy a group of doctors to the Pakistan earthquake in October 2005. Since then he has been working in Pakistan to assist people who were affected by natural disasters and conflict. In 2010 he initiated a mission to deploy doctors in Haiti to help those affected by the devastating earthquake, in early 2011 he provided disaster relief services to tsunami victims in Japan, assisted in the coordination of relief during Hurricane Sandy in New York in 2012 and deployed to The Philippines to provide logistical support to several Humanitarian organizations responding to Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
In 2014, Todd and CDRS continued to operate a Mother & Child Health Center in Northern Swat and began a collaboration with Imran Khan Foundation (IKF) to provide Mobile Medical Teams and major health system support in Bannu for the people of North Waziristan who have been forced to flee fighting between the Pakistan Army and The Taliban, and for communities affected by the flood emergency in Puhjab and AJK. In 2015, CDRS plans to further expand their collaboration with IKF and work with many other partners on projects focusing on health, Women's Empowerment and the Welfare of Children.

This past spring, my wife planted a few things in a very small garden area to the side of the house. Along with tomatoes, peppers, basil, zucchini, among other assorted things, she put in four sunflowers. We thought maybe we'd get to eat a little bit from the garden as well as let the grandkids have a little fun with growing things.
Wow! That small patch of dirt is incredibly fertile! We've enjoyed way more usable produce than I thought we would. And grandkids learned that produce really comes from somewhere else, taken good care of by someone else, before it gets to the local grocery store! Life lessons can be a good thing. And did I mention that these four sunflower plants grew taller than the first floor roofline?! Kinda like Jack and the Beanstalk to the grandkids...
And for me, I get to capture the beauty of of this past-it's-prime sunflower as summer rolls into autumn… all it's lovely form and texture and detail and fading color.
Here's a life lesson: Don't decide to pick a fight with these guys.

LIFE LESSONS I HAVE LEARNED:
A truly crazy person can make a sane person feel crazy....and yes, unfortunately I have come across a few crazies in my life! The beauty of maturity is knowing when to walk away and free ones soul of negativity. Life is just to darn short to be around others who fail to appreciate it! I now live for myself, so that I have more to give to others. There is no pleasing everyone no matter how hard you try. Just don't forget to smile even when it hurts! :)
not always what we want....My client who has recently been diagnosed with cancer......losing her long thick red hair has made her feel naked and exposed and very insecure..... to me she looks beautiful.... I wanted to photograph her to show her she is the same woman..... strong and amazing.... she may have lost her hair.... but she is gaining perspective on whats really important.... and we can all learn from life lessons.....

Projeto Paisagem - Vik Muniz - Rio+20
Vik Muniz projected on the ground a photograph that he made of Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro) from the Mirante Dona Marta, in Botafogo. And had the collaboration of the public that included their recyclable materials as plastic bottles, tetra pack cartons and aluminum cans in the picture until the design was completed with 65x60 ft. It was 1.3 ton of trash.
Born in São Paulo in 1961, Muniz has made a name for himself in the art world with his characteristic style of creating images using non-art materials. His works have included creations made from thread, wire, cotton, chocolate syrup, caviar, used computer parts and ripped magazine pages. He then photographs them, preserving the image of the work for display.

Doraemon (ドラえもん) Totally pinched from Wikipedia comes this explanation for the uninitiated:
Doraemon was awarded the Japan Cartoonists Association Award for excellence in 1973. Doraemon was awarded the first Shogakukan Manga Award for children's manga in 1982, and the first Osamu Tezuka Culture Award in 1997. In March 2008, Japan's Foreign Ministry appointed Doraemon as the nation's first "anime ambassador." Ministry spokesman explained the novel decision as an attempt to help people in other countries to understand Japanese anime better and to deepen their interest in Japanese culture." The Foreign Ministry action confirms that Doraemon has come to be considered a Japanese cultural icon. In 2002, the anime character was acclaimed as an Asian Hero in a special feature survey conducted by Time Asia magazine.
These items are from around 1998-1999 so not as easy to find anymore.
Included in this picture is a Doraemon Japanese Pencil Board (shitajiki -- 下敷き, literally under-sheet aka pencil board). Shitajiki are traditionally used to protect the surface underneath the paper from soak-through (which was an issue with calligraphy paint and rice paper) and from pen/pencil pressure. This one is an unusual shape being die-cut which makes it extra special, if not as useful.
More Shitajiki/Pencil Boards here.
Next to the pencil board is a character shaped package of printed gum while underneath is packages of Doraemon gum. The packaged stick gum is not boring either as seen in this random blog post (the ones above are unopened but it's a good bet the wrappers are similar).
On the bottom is a Furikake packet that comes in groups of 20 in a Furikake package as seen in green foil next to the packet (though flattened). More packets from the furikake package can be seen in the next picture. I'm sure, as is usual for character foods there was a premium with this but I can't remember what it was and it seems to have been separated from the rest, possibly long gone. UPDATE: Premium found, it is a scratch-off card (unscratched) and will be in a photo soon to come.
And on the right is a box of Doraemon character band-aids/bandages that can be seen out and unfolded. Stylish!
~~
These (and more) need a new home as I'm going to a different country for an extended stay soon so send me a Flickr Mail message (access through the arrow that appears near my profile photo when mousing over it) if interested.

You may have thought I didn't see,
Or that I hadn't heard,
Life lessons that you taught to me,
But I got every word.
Perhaps you thought I missed it all,
And that we'd grow apart,
But Dad, I picked up everything,
It's written on my heart.
Without you, Dad, I wouldn't be
The man I am today;
You built a strong foundation
No one can take away.
I've grown up with your values,
And I'm very glad I did;
So here's to you, dear father,
From your forever grateful kid.

B.W. Webb hosts his third annual Seven Cities Football Camp from Woodside High School in Newport News Virginia. It wasn’t very hard to spot B.W. Webb because the Tennessee Titans cornerback and former William and Mary standout couldn’t stop smiling and/or dancing.
With the early fall-like weather and the hundreds that showed up for his third annual Seven Cities Football Camp, there was plenty of reason to do both. Webb, who played at Warwick High School, welcomed more than 400 youngsters, ages 8 to 18, for a day of life lessons and football skills.
“I’m loving it, man,” said Webb, who was joined by a handful of NFL names, including Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Redskins linebacker Lynden Trail and free agent quarterback Michael Vick. “We’re just out here having a good time giving back.”
Webb, who grew up in Newport News, understands how important and impactful his mere presence can be to all of the kids hoping to follow in his footsteps. “We all grew up here and we know it’s not the easiest place to grow up,” said Webb.
“Sometimes, being a kid growing up in this area, you get caught up in the wrong things. So, we try to show them that we came up in this area. We’re doing well in our lives now, we set ourselves apart from all the bad things that was happening at the times we were growing up. So, to all the guys out here, we’re living testament that if you follow your goals, everything will work out.”
Vick was only too happy to help out his fellow Warwick alum.
“These kids deserve it,” said Vick. “We were all kids at one point and we all were inspired to become professional football players. Not everybody out here is going to make it, but we give them the hope and the inspiration and the opportunity to do so. The thing I try to instill in all of them is making sure they tackle their academics first and athletics second.”

As much as Mac loves his little brother, I think there was a bit of a realization as all (or at least most) of the attention was on Lennon for the day of his party. For the first time, the party wasn't for Mac, and I'm sure he was a little hurt and a little confused.
If growing up comes from learning some "life lessons", then even though it was Lennon's birthday, Mac grew up a little that day as well.
