The Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS), founded in 1974, is a non-profit Christian organization based in Victoria, British Columbia, which provides sail training and life lessons for 1,700 young people each year on tall ships and provides a valued link to area's maritime heritage. Pacific Grace was built at the S.A.L.T.S. Heritage Shipyard in Victoria, launched in October 1999 and commissioned in May 2001. She is based on the Grand Banks fishing schooner Robertson II, which the society operated from 1974 to 1995. After two seasons of coastal sailing, she departed in September 2003 on her first offshore voyage: down the coast to Costa Rica, west to Galapagos and Pitcairn, and back through the Marquesas and the Hawaiian Islands. From June 2007 to June 2008, she made a longer voyage, to the South Pacific, calling at: Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Guam, Okinawa, Shanghai, Osaka, Hawaii. Joey is giving me a life lesson

A large, erect dairy barn appears to have been well looked after. Before time and weathering destroyed crucial structural joints, a farmer clad this barn in metal extending its life by decades.

Behind the barn sits three empty silos, the only sound of life now comes from the coos of the pigeons scuttling around on the round roofs rather than from the whining noise of a blower sending silage up the piping. Lining the north side of the barn six vents are quiet, the fans inside shut off long ago. If an old farmer would step inside the barn now, every step would him back to scenes from long ago.

Scenes of milking cows eagerly stepping into open stanchions and quickly curling their long tongues into and around their nightly ration of ground corn while they were milked, newborn calves stepping lively in a smaller pen nearby and far off in another part of the barn might come the bleats of sheep waiting for their supper. All together these long forgotten sights, sounds and memories of a former life might flit in and out of his mind.

The small tribe that congregated in our home around our kitchen table for communal meals had two distinctive lives, one on the farm and occasional forays off the farm but it was the farm place itself that provided a base for us.

Back in the 1950s our daily lives were fairly simple as they revolved around animals, crops and each other although the importance of the order of those three depended on the time of day as well as the season of the year and also, how well we were getting on with each other any particular time.

I know there were probably some farm kids that grew up to be narcissistic and selfish individuals. But the path to a negative lifestyle like that was difficult to originate on the farm. From an early age, my dad and many others like him taught us farm kids the welfare of living animals took precedence over our desire to lay around the house, stay in bed until late morning or play ball instead of taking care of them. Their daily needs came first, sometimes even before ours.

We learned to take care of the land as it provided us with a living. Farm kids realized conservation and cultivation principles made the land more productive and the life of our family better off. We didn’t need non-farm activist groups telling us how to be good stewards as that came naturally to most farmers. It was very common in our part of the state for farmers to leave several rows of corn over the winter to provide food for wildlife. Many farmers allowed uncut grass to grow several feet on each side of a fence line to allow cover for pheasants and small animals.

It is easier now to look back to those days and realize that a farm was far more than a simple work center. It was a way of life that provided a platform that helped form life principles that served many of us well the rest of our lives.

This man could teach us a life lesson

I was in Parkanaur forest park one evening last year and only had my phone with me... ever the opportunist, I snapped these gorgeous rhododendron blossoms and was pretty pleased with the result.

Just a few days later and the petals were gone..... As always, nature has a way of teaching us life lessons... In a day and age when looks and beauty are counted so important (by the fashion/beauty industry - not by me!!!) it's wise to remember that these things only last for a while and that real beauty comes from deep within, it's the heart that counts!!!! and that's not just something "ugly" people say! :)

I will be off air for a while - have an important visitor from Canada coming to stay with me for a couple of days - so i'm busy making fudge, banoffee pie, chocolate cake and loads of other goodies lol

Have a great weekend everyone and thank you for your views, comments and faves :) :) :)

“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, some go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And baby, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soulmate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about.”

"Repetitive/Repetition"

Moments before the angry Pacific decided to show me who is in charge. The seawall, in front of me, is about as tall as I am. Thirty seconds after this photo was taken a monstrous wave crashed over. With water up to my knees and splashing over my head I bunkered down, facing shore, with my camera and tripod held tightly against my chest, I just took the saturating sea life-lesson. When the quenching subsided, I waddled away and proceeded to the nearest exit. My pockets were filled with sand, my clothes were soaked through, and my ears were ringing. I nodded to the pelicans, I'm sure they were laughing, and scurried up the goat trail that led me here. Lesson being: Always get insurance for your camera rentals. (No cameras were harmed in the making of this tale)

A rather hurried visit to Mt. Saint Helens, but one we couldn't complain about. The sun was shining, the temperatures mild and the wild flowers already starting to bloom.

There's something about viewing an area of destruction and watching it restore itself, that makes me believe we humans need to better follow the rhythms of nature for our life lessons.

With today being Friday, I set out to take a photograph of a fence. The sky was interesting with lots of clouds and the sun peeking through but I just couldn't find an agreeable composition. I was just about to leave when I noticed this discarded shoe left under a bench, it called out to me. I did not move it, just left it where it was and took a few shots. You never know what will give you inspiration, I'm often surprised at the subjects that make appealing images. Another life lesson learned, you aren't always going to get what you go after, sometimes you're left with the trash and that's ok, just make the most of it.

Kennedy & K2 Sons Of Beaches Early Morning First Day Of Spring 2024 - IMRAN™

There are always life lessons in everything we witness - even if we do not know it right at that moment. The ebb and flow of tides, and time, wait for no one. Fate can spring a surprise on us in any season.

I am not an early morning person. March 19 was the first day of spring, 2024 when I happened to be awake for 24 hours. So, I went for a walk with my precious German Shepherd Dog Kennedy, and always delightful still-puppy-ish K2. We found ourselves savoring the very low Tampa Bay tide at the beach outside my blessed home in Apollo Beach.

Both dogs enjoyed running around on the wet & cold sand, because it was still very windy winterish weather. Then, Kennedy sat to savor the scene, as he always loved doing - his ears still alert for any sound or command from me. Even the playful K2, who had just turned 4 the previous month, seemed to be “growing up” - and learning to sit and enjoy nature like Kennedy.

Moments of joy, moments of tranquility, moments of memories.

A baby woodpecker was practicing food finding skills on my pecan tree. They listen for sounds of bugs hiding under the bark then use their tongue to go after them. Pecan trees are good sources since they have soft wood. It is easy to pry under the bark for the goodies.

Life is fragile. I have heard the story of a person diagnosed with cancer and passed away in a month’s time.

Yet life is strong and tough. Many living beings survive in tough conditions.

It looks contradicting. The lesson is like what is being said in Buddhist teachings.

There is no constancy in life. There is no norm or constant rule in the world.

Don’t ever think these norms are always happening.

When you work hard, you will be rewarded.

When you study hard, you will get high grades.

When you make great arts, you will be recognized as a great artist.

When you love, you will be loved.

Some people say we should live like life ends tomorrow.

Do what you want to do before it is too late. May be this is a hug to yourself?

Happy Thursday!

"Collecting Dust"

Photo: Reylia Slaby Photography.

This is part of the Life lessons series.

Of recently, I've been doing so many things. It seems impossible to not be doing something all the time. In a way thats a good thing and a bad thing. A bad thing because it's super difficult for me to relax, a good thing because I am doing something.

I often see people put their dreams on hold, and let it collect dust. That is never good because later on you can come to a place in life when you think it's too late. But that is not so. The young woman in the photo thinks it is finished, but do you see the path falling before the her? There is still a lot more walking to be done. And once you brush off the dust, the walk is very interesting indeed.

A video for the behind the scenes is coming up soon! Keep an eye out for that!

Thank you Johnna for having a photo-shoot with me, and for always picking me up when I want to give up.

Always,

Striking out in last inning in a losing cause...has to learn to get over it. Edited using Silver Efex Pro to which sepia added.

i came home to find he'd been working in the garden... clearing weeds, raking. it turns out they aren't ready to give it up. after a long walk they worked again until it was too dark to see. i love when they work together and feel good about hard work. life lesson.

Life lesson. It is said that no rewards come to those who do not take risks. This little gal is proof that in nature, even the littlest things take risks. Who knows how the edge of this stainless steel mug has enticed Ms. Ladybug to walk on the never-ending edge, drown to one side or fall the equivalent of 530 stories to the other. Is she thirsty and a confident swimmer? Is she new to life and ignorant of its dangers? Did she end up here by accident? Or is she on in years and finds this little jaunt exhilarating – akin to mall walking. Who’s to say. Does it change your perspective on life? Are you inclined to take risks and live on the edge?

I woke up early (again) with a plan of heading to West Seattle to take some sunrise photos. I'm on vacation until January 2nd, so I guess I can do whatever I want until then. Anyways, I arrived before sunrise and waited for the light to paint the sky. Sure enough, the deep purple, pink and blue light painted the sky. I think I got some pretty decent shots that I'll share later. I took a few sunrise photos from different vantage points, and the last batch I took were from the pier in this photo.

As I was packing up I turned around and saw the fisherman and had a "Yes!" moment. I always wanted to take this photo. It's one of those that's been bouncing around in my head for awhile but I didn't plan on taking it today. I quickly hightailed it off the pier not wanting to disturb the fisherman and walked to this spot. I got lucky in the sense I didn't have to monkey around with changing lenses nor jockey for a better vantage point. I was hoping that the fisherman kept the fishing pole in the shot.

Photography is filled with life lessons. You set out to do one thing, but something better presents itself and you have to be ready to take advantage of it. You probably shouldn't follow this life lesson if you're one of those people in a relationship.

Was engaged in the most mundane of tasks last evening, refilling the washer fluid in my car. It's one of those things I never think of until I'm driving and promptly forget when I return home, only to have the experience repeat the next day. I was feeling rather self congratulatory for having remembered this time. However my smugness dissipated the moment I closed the hood and happened to glance up at the sky. It was brilliant pink, one of those impossibly intense hues that happens every so often at sunset. Problem was the sun had already set several minutes ago and this color wasn't going to last much longer. I wondered how on earth this could have happened without my noticing it. I'm the one who watches the sky around d here, and this one got right by me. Ideally I would have already been in position and shooting the sunset, not standing in my driveway like a doofus holding an empty jug of washer fluid. I raced in and grabbed the camera, jumped on my bicycle, and pedaled off to my go-to place for sunsets and night photography. By the time I arrived the color had pretty well leached out of the sky. Just a dull band of pink remained on the horizon. And it was already so dark I was well past the point of hand holding the camera. I had debated about bringing the tripod, but left it behind at the last minute figuring I wouldn't need it. So that's my story. I did capture some rather grainy images that I'll never post. And it was nonetheless an enjoyable life experience, as well as a valuable life lesson. I'll be much more attentive to the sunset sky tonight; won't be caught off guard like this again. And on the bright side, my windshield is now crystal clear.

This photo shows what can happen with pitch-perfect timing of sundown. Incredible depth, rich shadows, gleaming highlights, and a general sense of drama. Such a fine line between this and the utterly muddy shots that follow just a few minutes later.

Another image I shot from when I went to Birmingham the other day! Thank you to @richjjones for the really good advice and life lessons, I learnt a lot from this day! I hope to shoot more and better composed images in the future. One big thing I took away from that day is that setting your camera aside and exploring your subject is better than just rushing to take the image!

It's been months since I saw my brother. I was so surprised that we both turned into blonde. It feels like we had just hung out yesterday.

During this brief meeting, he gave me a lecture on love:

Bro: "Did you love him? "

Sis: "uh...."

Bro: "Kimmy, ever since I've known you, you're reluctant to love...you will use every word but love... it's okay to love... it's ok to give your heart to someone... but you just have to be careful..."

Sis: "But, I wasn't sure if that was love."

Bro: "If you feel it, it's love... you never know whose life you could change for the better...and what harm is there in doing that?"

Bro: "Did you love him, then? "

...teaching me a life lesson
