DEARBORN, Michigan - Starting up an urban garden on a vacant lot in your community won't solve all the economic challenges of the community, but can be a key piece to the puzzle. That was the key message Wednesday during a seminar on green initiatives during the Michigan Municipal League's 2010 Annual Convention in Dearborn. The session panelists were Erin Caudell of the Ruth Mott Foundation and Jacky and Dora King of Harvesting Earth Farm near Flint, Michigan. View a clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKTvhxbIn74) from a Michigan State University documentary about the Kings. The Kings started an urban garden in 2006 by turning an abandoned trash-ridden lot into what's now a vibrant urban garden that is selling its produce to the local community. The Kings, both karate instructors, also tie in the gardening program to their karate school - King's Karate. Karate students work the urban garden to learn life lessons and the importance of healthy eating.

Caudell gave a how-to lesson during the work shop and explained how help is available for people interested in starting an urban garden. For details about the League and what we do go to mml.org. This is a photograph of my Father. He has truly been a rock in my life, providing me not only the means to have a great life, but a way in which I can enjoy it as well. Working two jobs and sacrificing countless hours of his life for the well being of me, my brother, and my mother, he has given me an ultimate role model. He is someone I can always look up to and always be proud of knowing and loving.

They say you are a product of your environment, and to this I can fully attest. He has taught me a vast array of life lessons and shows me what it takes to be a real man. Without him at my side and without his careful persistence in teaching me the right way to live, I would surely not be where I am today.

I stand, a very proud man, knowing full well that my father has done everything in his power (and so very much more) to teach me the tools of life.

This photograph is dedicated to my father, Eric. To the memories we have etched into eternity, and to the ones we have yet to experience, I write this with love.

C&C Welcome!

Enjoy,

This is a shot taken at sunset on the evening of the 20th Dec 2013 at 7:48pm.

My family and I took a road trip to Cape Town in December 2013, I had planned to do loads of travel and landscape photo shoots over the 3 week break.

We had previously stayed in Simon’s Town, originally established as a harbour and later became a Royal Naval Base, it is a magical and historical place, and I’d go back in a heartbeat!

This time however, we stayed in the quaint village of Kommetjie. From a photographic perspective this offered some advantage, both Long Beach and Noordhoek Beach are easily accessible from where we stayed in Kommetjie, and best of all, no more than 15 minutes away on foot.

I fell in love with Cape Town’s abundance of natural beauty, it’s just ridiculous how beautiful the landscape is, you’re so spoilt for choice as a landscape photographer you almost don’t know where to point your lens!

On this particular evening, I took off in the direction of Long Beach and headed up toward the historic Slangkop Lighthouse which is situated at the edge of the water right next to the Table Mountain National Park.

The cloud cover and light looked good, in fact so good that I managed to pull off at least half a dozen shots before I decided to put some ‘black glass’ on the front of my camera and set up for some longer exposures.

This shot is one of the results of my adventure on 20th December 2013 from our amazing Cape Town adventure

My family and I took a road trip to Cape Town in Dec 2013, what an adventure it turned out to be!

Sometimes in life we get so caught up focusing in a particular direction that we forget to stop every now and then and look around, human nature I guess. Well the same is true in photography, you set your mind on a goal, that one shot you're after, and you lose perspective of your immediate surroundings, on this particular day I was 'hunting' for a particular shot so bad that I almost missed this one.

I guess the life lesson in this is to just slow down, call a time out and catch your breath, and take it all in before you put your head down and get stuck in again!

4 generations, but no stories. DO NOT wait to talk to the people you love.

Template is Katie Pertiet; papers are Stampin' Up and quote is from Pintrest.

Karma comes in many forms sometimes askew from our expectaions ...

Any single parent knows the seemingly unending challenges in raising children by yourself.

I am a single father to three of the most amazing girls that I've ever met.

I've tried to raise them to be compassionate, considerate... to be responsible and to have good judgement... to understand that their actions can make some difference in our world... that they have within them the power to make changes to our reality...

Today I am so filled with pride.

On May 20th my daughter came home with a brood of tiny ducklings in her tee shirt.

She had tears in her eyes.

Mama duck was killed by a car and the ducklings were milling about their mama's smooshed body waiting for some miracle that would never come...

They must've just hatched because they were so tiny and helpless... cute with their fluffy yellow and brown down and their tiny little duckbills...

My daughters decided that they'd raise these little fuzzballs...

They researched and they learned all about the care of ducklings... they took turns staying up late to adjust the lights that kept them warm... they'd read next to them and watch for signs that they were too cold or too hot.

Every day they'd feed them and clean their pen.

In the first days we lost a couple and the house was filled with tears.

It was a heartbreaking time.

Dad had to have the sensitivity to let them absorb this lesson... that there is no substitute for the skill of a mother duck in raising her chicks... that the girls were doing their best... that nature was 'culling' the weakest chicks so that the strong could survive...

And dad had to leave the room for a few minutes after trying to teach them that one.

They had to raise these ducklings and I had to raise them.

Still the tears flowed and there were a couple of duck funerals in our backyard... one of my daughters got really upset and claimed 'this is all my fault!'

I let the lessons sink in and I encouraged them as much as I could... I never did anything more than capture the ducks when they got out...

They knew that they were doing this on their own.

As the little ducks grew the joy of watching them grow overcame the sadness of the early loss and their waddling around the yard made us all laugh and smile...

Each day the girls took care of them... each night they put them to bed in a tiny pen in our shed... in the morning they'd put them in another pen theyd built in the yard... give them baths with the hose and feed them...

The little ducks grew and they grew so fast and pretty soon we all knew it was time to let them go.

I had told them in the first days that if they could raise just one of the ducks to maturity that they'd done a good job.

They raised four.

Today we let the last one go... 'Feathers.'

She'd become quite 'imprinted' on us... she was the one I'd run into in my bathroom... she was the one who thought she was a person... she was the one who'd walk into the house if the door was left open... she was the one who expected a seat at the dinner table...

We drove in my truck to the pond near our house and my youngest daughter insisted at the last minute on carrying Feathers in her arms so she could give her one last hug.

There would be no more baths with her duck friend.

There were some tears as we said goodbye and Feathers waddled into the water...

She let out some quacks of joy and she looked really happy.

Then she ran across the water and joined her siblings who'd been in the pond for two days.

She started eating right away.

My daughters tears dried up and they became filled with pride as Feathers started swimming and cavorting with the others...

They knew right there that they had done this...

I told them how proud I was of them and gave a round of hugs and took some pictures.

The proudest one at the pond right there was me.

It's moments like this that make all of the challenges and all of the struggle so worth it... these moments are the payoff.

Moments when you see the product of the way you've raised your children.

These girls will make a difference in our world.

They already have.

JAZZ ROOTS: JAZZ IN THE KEY OF ELLISON, GRAMMY® winner Kurt Elling is among the world’s foremost jazz vocalists. He won the DownBeat Critics Poll for 14 consecutive years and was named “Male Singer of the Year” by the Jazz Journalists Association on eight occasions. An international jazz award winner, he has also been GRAMMY® nominated a dozen times. “Elling combines authenticity with stunning originality,” is how The Wall Street Journal describes his talents, while The Guardian has called him “a kind of Sinatra with superpowers.” Elling’s most recent release, The Questions, vividly exemplifies his ability to respond to the world around him with both urgent immediacy and a unique perspective. Co-produced by NEA Jazz Master and acclaimed saxophonist Branford Marsalis, the album searches for answers to the culture’s most divisive social, political and spiritual issues in the songs of Bob Dylan, Carla Bley and Leonard Bernstein, and the poetry of Rumi and Wallace Stevens.

Opening the evening will be vocalist René Marie. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, Marie borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. “We are thrilled to present the celebrated GRAMMY®-winning vocalist Kurt Elling, who will breathe new life into beloved jazz standards with his unique combination of robust swing and lyrical insight,” said Liz Wallace, Arsht Center vice president of programming.

“Kurt Elling is a brilliant and fearless artist. He takes the listener on a journey from poignant beauty to overwhelming excitement. A Kurt Elling show is ‘must-see’ for me!,” said Shelly Berg, JAZZ ROOTS Artistic Advisor. “Rene Marie will not disappoint in the opening set. I try to attend PRIDE events in support of a friend I owe a lot to.

Way back when, a buddy named Sam Evans befriended me, in spite of my red neck and ignorance. We lost him to AIDS back in 1988 - but I will never forget his friendship and the life lessons he taught me.

So a few weeks back, me and m'man Allistair hit Spike TV's VGA awards. I learned some valuable life lessons there. First off, I was more than a little surprised to see how many hot chicks were in attendance. I certainly remember the time when video games were a definitely a massive strike against you when it came to girls. (granted, some of them were hookers used for a segment on the show).

Second, nerds are alive and well. This scrawny kid behind us was the epitome of NERD. Skinny, XL shirt, wispy mustache and a high-pitched voice, with which he used to constantly make nerd comments throughout the show. All he was missing was the snort-laugh.

Third: Barry Bostwick hates nerds. While we were sitting in the balcony, I glanced over a few seats and saw Barry sitting there, by himself with this look on his face that suggested maybe his doctor had given him a prostate exam a few moments earlier. He just squiiiirmed. (he had a small segment on the show, which explained why he was there at all.)

Four: 50 Cent can't read. BIIIIG teleprompter with lots of baaaad jokes. 50 Cent just says, "here's an award and the winner is blah". And leaves. Awesome.

Fifth thing: the writers on the show think nerd jokes from the eighties are still funny. "All your bases" type jokes. You guys suck. Seriously. At one point, some shitty band who was presenting actually apologized for some crappy joke they read off the teleprompter.

Six: Sam 'The Man' Jackson has NO shame. HE is a NERD. And cool as hell. He actually took Barry's seat later in the show, which was awesome. Oh, and we were both on TV when Sam did his intro to crapfest band AFI. What a bunch of no-talent ass clowns. But we got to sit by Sam Jackson so that was cool.

Lastly, Tenacious D really does rock live. Pyrotechnics and all that good stuff. They played "The Metal" and had the big Metal-Monster stomping around on the stage. The whole stage was actually a huge LED display and they stomped a portion of it out and they had to fix it in the middle of the show. Awesome.

We left early to get food, but we didn't miss much, that's for sure.

NEEEEERDS!

'Whenever a calamity strikes upon you, never complain.' - His Divine Eminence RA Gohar Shahi

One valuable life lesson I learned today.

While long exposures will get rid of the small ripples in the water, as you can see in this 10s exposure shot, you still need something close to an absolute wind-less situation if you want to take a shot like this, lest the FRIGGIN BOATS move around during exposure!!!!1!!11!!!1!!!! XP

Title is a rehash, but for some reason, whenever I take one of these shots at Jamaica Pond, this Daniel Lanois song pops into my mind.

Colin Adams

Listening to his father playing guitar (an exceptional guitar player who supported the Rolling Stones & Chuck Berry in his youth) and his Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles record collection left a lasting impression on Colin Adams. Playing keyboard in front of the school aged 10 he drifted away from playing music until forming a band with Steven Perrott and starting to record their own material. This re-lit the fire and began Colin's musical journey. Colin has turned to his Scottish roots for his solo work with vocals displaying a distinctly Scottish accent compared to his early releases with The Rolling River Band. The music continues in the same style as The RRB’s sound with a modern fusion of folk, rock, country and blues but the vocals sound more natural and let you know exactly where Colin is from.

"From playing live as a solo artist it just kind of happened - I'm Scottish so it wasn't so much a decision but just began to sing it that way and liked how it sounded. With the RRB on hold and having built a home studio in my attic I decided to put it to good use!" The first release as a solo artist and under the "Colin Adams" title is Bonnie Scotland and was recorded in "The Attic" during one evening in August 2011. The EP consists of 3 traditional Scottish songs, Bonnie Ship The Diamond, Loch Tay Boat Song and Wild Mountain Thyme and pays tribute to Scotland and the songwriting skills from a bygone era. The EP is available for FREE on the music page.

The first full album, Life & Lessons To Be Learned, also recorded in "The Attic" isn't so much of a solo affair but more "The Colin Adams Band" as all the tracks feature Paul Lamberton on guitar. "It's been great to record the album and jam with Paul. Songs that were originally written for playing solo have just been given such dynamics and hopefully this is just the start and we can continue to play and record together for a long time. It was also good to get my music buddy "Scud" involved too. The album is based on life and the highs and lows it brings. Good times, bad times, meeting new friends, losing others. We all have crazy stuff going on in our lives that we deal with day to day, some more than others but we all just have to try to make the best of the life you have. Many of these highs and lows have impacted on the songs and stories told within my music."

The new sound mixes the Johnny Cash, Josh Ritter and John Prine influenced style with a little bit Frightened Rabbit, The Corries and Dougie MacLean thrown into the mix. The lyrics are filled with romance, sadness, humour and Colin's outlook on Life & Lessons To Be Learned.

That's why they call it the present:)

Life lesson: His grandmother lost her battle with cancer before he was born. His brother and I visited most days. Until then I have never been so close to someone facing something so terrible. Kris was an amazing woman. She handled every discomfort, fear, and agitation with grace. I learned a lot of things about myself and about life through our conversations. One thing I have kept close to my heart is the belief that every day is a gift. Our time here with each other is finite. None of us know what tomorrow will bring, but we all can make the most of right now.

My son has recently been constructing presents out of boxes he finds around the house. Then he places small gifts inside and uses the boxes as a mailbox to deliver his goodies to various family members. The first thing I saw when I woke up this morning was one of these boxes filled with pipe cleaner bracelets. He brings me so much happiness. Here is a silly grin to share with all of you:)

When life gets tough, keep your head low and keep moving forward...

Stand on your own foot and don't trust whitey.

U.S. Marshals Service personnel alongside local law enforcement officers joined the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation in providing mentorship opportunities to more than 100 at-risk youth in support of its annual Badges for Baseball mentoring program at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., June 16, 2022. Badges for Baseball was created in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice and pairs kids with law enforcement mentors from local communities to play baseball and learn important life lessons about teamwork, communication, self-esteem and leadership while building healthy relationships between inner-city youth and law enforcement. Local Police offered a procession of Tribute to Bristol’s own Gary Powell on Friday, March 2, 2018. As Pastor Sheets pronounced to the family and friends of Gary Powell on Fri. March 2, 2018, “This is not a funeral - this is a celebration of the life of a man who left an impression on everyone he met.” Family, friends and all whom he met in his journey on Earth learned a life lesson from him. His wife Linda Powell and his children, grandchildren and stepchildren will attest that he was also a well-loved man. He was the local Coin Man who could teach you something you didn’t even know that you needed to know. He was retired from the Bristol Police Dept., and he loved his old police car so much that he bought it when the Town sold it, and would drive it in the Homecoming Parade. At the family luncheon held Friday afternoon, the family raised their glasses of his favorite diet Red Pop in a joyful toast of love for him. Just the Facts: Gary R. Powell, Nov. 30, 1940 to February 24, 2018. He passed away at The Maples in Goshen, IN. He owned the Interstate Coin Exchange in Bristol and was a retired Reserve Officer of the Bristol Police Department. Memorial contributions may be given to the Bristol Indiana Police Dept. Reserves.

Life Lesson # 19

What's so deadly about Envy? Envy is a truth barometer for recognizing one's deepest desires...a zeal that creates a drive for improvement. No deadly sin in any of that, right?

Envy awakens your spirit to perk up to the lies your ego and upbringing have been whispering in your spirit-deaf ears about what you really want.

Envy gives you the change to find out what you truly -- and you-ly -- want.

(which brings us to...)

Life Lesson #20

When you're around people who have less, you tend to strive for less. But when you're with people who have what you crave, your spirit gets enlivened to find ways to hanker down and get what you crave.

(Life Lesson #19 & 20 taken from The 7 Lively Sins, how to enjoy your life, dammit)

Inktober 2025 Day 29 (life) lesson #mastoart #art #sketch #inktober #acrylic #marker #lesson

Holy Schnikies, what have I gotten myself into this time?

I guess I forgot to add some small object to the picture, for size reference - but this thing is massive. This is like a full loaf of sourdough rye (more on that later...) with about a pound of deli meats - pastrami and corned beef on the bottom layer, and roast beef, salami and turkey on the top layer, along with lettuce, tomatoes, cole slaw and russian dressing.

Right off the bat, I realized I prepared all wrong by practicing with Sarge's combination sandwiches, which are served on regular slices of rye bread - each half of this thing's got three ultra-thick slices of seeded sourdough! That bread's going to fill me up and expand in my stomach -

But, I decided that I had nothing to lose - even if I couldn't eat the whole sandwich, I'd learn a lot about the process, and maybe pick up some tips on how to defeat this beast next time.

LIFE LESSON #2: Never eat anything bigger than your head.

If I could sum up the life lessons my mother taught me into three things it would be these:

1, be kind to everyone, even the annoyingly awkward girl in your grade that you don’t really want to be at your birthday party. Put yourself in her shoes, how would it feel being the only person in your grade not invited to the party?

2, never leave the song ‘brown eyed girl’ or ‘man I feel like a woman’ un-danced.

3, always follow the rule of thirds in a photograph.

Well, sorry Mum, the first two stuck but I just love to blatantly ignore the last rule.

What is something you wish you were better at?

I wish I were better at making the right decisions. Going to Wilsons Prom today wasn’t the right decision but it was soooo pretty and fun!

Life lessons learned:
