My guest today is my good friend Samantha Walters. Sam is an actor who has worked professionally in Manitoba’s theatre and film industry and is also a Speech-Language Pathologist, which as you can imagine gave us a lot to talk about. In this episode, she shares her journey which is packed full of stories, experiences, and life-lessons. She has a 4 year Major in Theatre and Film from the University of Winnipeg where she focused on the Performance for Stage side of the program. At the end of her acting degree, she did Canada’s National Voice Intensive program which is six-weeks where you learn the power of voice and speech. At the time it was in Vancouver, now it is in Toronto and is designed for artists/actors etc. She also has a Masters degree of Clinical Science for Speech-Language Pathology which she received from the University of Western Ontario in London, On.

As a kid, Sam asked a lot of questions and was a curious child (which I believe is one of the strengths that has helped her continuously grow over the years and assist in carving out her path). She was involved in dance, gymnastics, figure skating, Girl Guides of Canada, swimming and was exposed to acting in grade 4. At only 16 years old, she decided to focus on her acting career and after auditioning for a documentary about the Vaughn Street Jail, made her first pay cheque of $1,500. She acted at the Manitoba Theatre Center and was part of the Back Stage Pass program which opened up more doors for her down the road. She was extremely proud to act in the ‘Immigration Stories’ play which was put on by Sarasvati Productions (I highly encourage listeners to check them out) and this idea is absolutely beautiful. Currently, she is working as an SLP and as an acting coach for youth at Expressions Film Studio in Winnipeg.

A few side-notes worth mentioning before we dive into the episode. First, the format for the podcast is very much a past-present-future look at my guests and for most of them, this is the first time in a long time they’ve had the opportunity to reminisce and share their story. The reason I’m pointing this out is we do at times bounce around in time-frames because certain key moments pop-up randomly during our conversation. I bring this up as Sam is goal oriented and a perfectionist so this bouncing around in time-frames causes her to at times wish she had prepared a timeline map of key-points she could use to help guide her story. I just wanted to say that for Sam, and other possible future guests that this Podcast allows for bouncing around and doesn’t have to be perfect. There are a lot of gems in this episode which I think people will find valuable…plus, we’ll do a round two. Second, my dog Oscar comes in and out of the interview a couple times (he doesn’t bark, just comes up to Sam to say hello so if you hear some panting than just hang in there, it doesn’t last long ha-ha) Lastly, I also should mention, when we recorded the episode I had totally forgot I had dinner plans so I had to cut our interview short towards the end. We could have continued talking for another two hours but had to wrap it up quickly so I apologize for the flow changing towards the end…Again, we’ll do a round two.

Without further ado, please enjoy my conversation with Samantha Walters.

thanks for the life lessons, waiter.

I try to attend PRIDE events in support of a friend I owe a lot to.

Way back when, a buddy named Sam Evans befriended me, in spite of my red neck and ignorance. We lost him to AIDS back in 1988 - but I will never forget his friendship and the life lessons he taught me.

In December of my 21st or 22nd year, I was riding the Greyhound bus home from college, for Christmas, and read a story by R. Wright Campbell, called simply "Da," a boy's name for his grandpa.

It was about a boy who learns a love for carrier pigeons, and life lessons too, from his grandfather.

In 1989, Michael Landon made it into a film called "Where Pigeons Go to Die," his last NBC TV film, as he died of pancreatic cancer 07-01-1991.

It was filmed on a still-unused plot of ground, right by the McD's I recently posted, (which doesn't face the street,) and across from the twin-towered, giant K-Mart, the Furr's (now China Star) and the recently posted Red Lob, all of which appear briefly, in the film.

Here are some shots I took during filming.

Bing.com view shows McD's in bottom left corner, the film site, still undeveloped, the pond, and the massive K-mart across the street.

Upon traveling up the winding road in Dyer Park, you'll find the small, mustard-colored home to The First Tee of The Palm Beaches on the hilltop. Like Tuesday morning, many spend much of their time out back hitting chip shots, putting, and working on their swing.

Golf is just the surface of The First Tee program. Its intention is teaching youth valuable life skills and character development promoted through the game. There are about 600 children in the program, about half with disabilities, and all get to learn from PGA instructors how to improve their play.

"When those kids are out there it's the coolest thing," executive director Carl Minstretta said. "It's a life-skills experience, but the vehicle is golf."

"I want to beat my dad and grandpa," said Yesbeck, who said she feels left out when her father and grandfather take her brother out on golf trips. She said she wants to improve her swing in hopes of getting closer to achieving her goal.

Boyce, 36, superintendent of The First Tee, buys Ozzlyn pink golf clubs and golf balls to help keep her interested. He tries to avoid entering her in tournaments or getting too "hands-on" during lessons. Boyce said it was the program's values and lessons that attracted him and his daughters to the program.

"They don't teach you these sorts of things in school," Boyce said. "It's about the lessons they teach. Respect and the other core values, that's why I wanted them to get into The First Tee."

INDIA' Where else?

One year after the success of our first video in Shanghai ( vimeo.com/33024534 ) Pierre Lelievre and myself "Anthony Finocchiaro" decided to find adventure around in a much more exotic place.. INDIA !

We landed in Delhi but with the clear intention to visit the country as much as we could.

For ten days in India, we had the intention to find a way of transport to escape from the big city and mix with the local population, the real one !!! We planned to take a great life lesson and also share our love of the inline skating, roll on virgin spots and learn skating to the young generation.

Two days in Delhi was almost enough for us to skate most of the city ... Cosmopolitan population shortly shared the info that two crazy Frenchies were inline skating through the streets jumping all the obstacles and catch the tuktuks. It was fun to hear people saying to use "Nice shoes " speaking about our skates, but every time was a challenge for us to explain what is " inline " and what we do here, as we had many questions from curious people.

After some research we decided to rent a motorcycle and go to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, it was a 200 km road trip between the two cities, which is not really not much in Europe ... But here 200km bike that can quickly turn into a 6/7 hours drive, which was ideal for us to make a few more stops through different cities. So we took the time to stop in beautiful spots where we shared moments with Elephants , snake charmers or cricket players.

We arrived late in Agra but we we still headed straight to the Taj Mahal where our first meeting has been with a tribe of stealing monkeys who tried to ride our bike and wear our helmets… After fighting this crazy monkeys we fully enjoyed a beautiful sunset under the walls of Taj in the company of military guards who were amused to see two tourists a bit like no other, and laughed to hear us saying that we came straight from Delhi with our destroyed motorcycle ... haha.

We spent a total of two days in this beautiful city, made incredible encounters and especially memorable sessions but also left a few pieces of our famous motorcycle after a spectacular crash. We managed to land safely but the bike lost its first and second gear ... so you can imagine what it may look like to start from Zero with the third gear…

Back to Delhi we lost our third gear so it was really hard to continue to tour with this lethal weapon in the middle of the jungle road, so we decided to give back this broken shit and continue to end this journey by skitching cars, tuktuk or even camels, but always making extraordinary meetings with inlines on our feet!

For this trip we used both the SEBA FR1 Orange & Blue customized way FR-A by adding the soulplate, and the new SEBA Street Invaders wheels which really passed the test on this very difficult grounds.

For amateur or Pro skater, this skate skate was more than ideal for this safari trip. THANKS SEBA Skates and thanks everyone who made this trip so special, I hope to feed back and show these pictures to as much people as possible!

Also thank you Pierre for being always on top, this is just the beginning of our adventure ..

Vito's Life Lessons

Week 49

You don't have to have it all figured out to move forward.

------------

I missed last week. I hate that. But by the time I realised it was late, and dark, and I do not have the skill for indoor photos...

In any case this week we made it! ;) The dogs and I went to a new walking spot today- it was great, even though completely unknown. This quote really fit the photo literally, and my life figuratively.

Vito is one wise little dude. ;)

I've always been an advocate for taking responsibility for "what you did do" instead of telling me the typical kids (and often adult) reply "but he...". I didn't realize or actuality my "taking responsibility" philosophy until I had my kids.

Areyousureaboutthatblog.blogspot.com is a proactive mom, who blogs about kids life lessons.

As with most things, watching my kids interact it helps crystallize how I feel about the subjects and issues that come

up in real life via the news, NPR, Facebook and Twitter. This post goes a little around the bush when it comes to the issue around the #whyIstayed tweets highlighting that we should ask the abuser "why they hit/hurt" not ask the victim why they stayed. These tweets reminded me how we have come a Long way in our home to evolve and develop the philosophy to: *Take Responsability for what you did do.*

We humans don't naturally take well to "taking responsibility." It's so much easier to deflect, and blame people or inanimate objects: my computer isn't working, he didn't get me the file I needed in time to complete the summary, it's not my fault I had 2 hours of homework and I didn't finishy chores. However this no longer flies in our home. I started seeing my kids, and neighborhood kids telling stories with the *blame something* reason, and parents agreeing with their kid! These observations awakened my frustration when others don't take responsibility for their actions. And frankly when we parents and guardians don't teach our kids HOW to take responsibility.

How to Apologize

I once watched the Bachelor: the final rise ceremony (even tho I don't watch the series I always seem to catch this particular season end-episode) and observed the Worst Apology. A brief, insincere, "well I'm sorry for that." Clearly the crappy apology resonated with me because the next day I witnessed one of my older sons one-in-a-dozen apologize to his brother in a lame insincere way and because mom said too. The TV shows fake apology irked me, and brought to my conscious surface the fact that I hate insincerity. Don't bother apologizing for the sake of saying the words, do it right or don't do it all. I want my boys "to do what's right BECAUSE it's the right thing to do." And do it correctly.

After these two a-ha moments, I googled a proper apology. I knew you needed to say "I am sorry" (while making eye-contact), but I even lacked knowing the other two important parts. A prope apology has 3-steps. First: Acknowledge what you DID do. Second: Saying I'm sorry. And Third: Making up for what you did.

For my kids the hardest learning was Acknowldge what YOU did. Kids readily say "I'm sorry I hit you,... BUT don't take my toy from me." Instantly defeating the purpose of the apology and using the "BUT he" to instantly blaming the person they hurt. Or the alternative "But I didn't ... (Do what I'm being blamed for). The denial of the younger brother accusation, because the younger brother is slightly off in his explanation of what happened. I just shit it down! Mom says: "Take Responsability for what you did do!" Oh my! The "But He" and "but I didn't" doesn't fly with that statement. It's not an open-ended "what did you do?" Instead it's direct because I'm telling them to step up and "take Responsability." We've found that the key element.

I leaned early to teach the kids what "their Responsability is." Granted after my young son was born this became easier because I witnessed that i am not an octopus and I can't do it all. I also didn't want entitled children - that's a separate blog post. So my standard line evolved. Feed the dog, it's your Responsability. Clean your room, I don't play their, it's your Responsability. And when my older son began to argue... Why do I have to empty the dish washer? I said for An Entire Summer in 2014 "it's your Responsability. I have to make lunch, dinner, take care of Inez, take care of everyone's laundry... Do You Do That? No! Because those are my responsabilities. Everyone in this house has a Responsability, and for now, this one is yours." My older son couldn't argue his way outta that.

I'll ice the kids this: it's ubber hard to stand their and just say what "you did" without blaming anyone or anything. Extremely difficult even for me as an adult. Taking full Responsability for your share of the crime, wow! How rarely do we see that happen with adults, let alone kids?

I think I blogged previously of when my older son, then in kindergarten, needed to apologize to his teacher. I made him memorize the 3 steps, And repeat it a dozen times between 3pm Wednesday and 8am Thursday. (I am happy to report I'm a better mom and the apology system flows in our house thru practice now and not military drills.)

I personally have lived this apology style after teaching it to my kids. It really is very difficult to simply acknowledge only your portion of the act. But it's also EXTREMELY empowering. Borderline manipulative power. As an aside, when I've witnessed my kids enact the "take Responsability for what YOU DID do."

Building Character thru Taking Responsability

Which brings me to an interesting by product of the "take Responsability" philosophy and "proper apology," building character. I read a fabulous book early in my older sons life titles "The Men they will become," which discussed how character forms and how boys become men. (I think I have blogged about how this book helped me also understand developing a boys "emotional toolbox, see those blog labels too.) He was 2 years old when I was learning about why we need to let boys make mistakes. And when boys take stupid risks, it's their natural way of learning (note: the stupid risks are arguably not INSANE and danger risk levels are curbed because we've done our parenting job and the little voice goes off in my sons head saying "this isn't a good idea!"). Mistakes are critical to child development. But we need to tell the kids, show them to learn from their mistake, and them it becomes a lesson! And a learning. All the while building character, because their doing things, and verbalizing emotionally difficult subjects, embarrassing ones. But I hope, that at this young age - if I engrained that act of taking responsibility - maybe my kids will not take crazy risks. They've lived a difficult apology, and reparations which prepare them (the boys especially) for preventative good decision making.

Prevention

This parts lasts, because it started when my older son was 6 or so. You don't beat people up. You don't hit girls ever. You can restrain others from hitting you, but you don't start the fight. A gentleman defends his honor, and his family, but he doesn't provoke an attack.

I have also told my boys that when it's temto get married, pick a girl who speaks another language, who can cook as my kids will know how to cook well also), who loves you and who doesn't start fights with you. You shouldn't have to argue a lot.

These are simple principles, but their reiterated very often in our home. Very Often, as often as the dangers of crossing the street!!!

I hope all these values combined: "taking Responsability for what you did do, and reparations," help build their character. To do things in life that are difficult, and build their emotional toolbox.

Then the guiding values of the "qualities their partner should have" in addition to what the kids will eventually find attractive, will help them stay away from people who instigate, and those that live in anger.

I hope in the end - this helps all of us avoid the #whyIstayed scenario. Because they've been taught to take Responsability if their actions and words.

Make mistakes. Breathe, reflect, and Laugh.Out.Loud!!!

Various media outlets and some blogs are taking a very crude approach to reporting her passing. One in particular really burns me up! Read this:

The Headline: Kanye West's Mom Goes Out Olivia Goldsmith Style

Kanye West's number-one fan, his mom Donda West, died this weekend in Los Angeles from complications related to a cosmetic procedure, CNN has just reported. Donde, 58, was the author of Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar, which was released earlier this year. She once compared her son to Jesus, and the worship was apparently mutual. "Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you," he sang on 2005's Late Registration. West's publicist won't say what type of cosmetic surgery she was having, but we're putting all of our liposuction plans on permanent hold. [Source: The Daily Intelligencer, a blog from New York Magazine]

Now someone PLEASE tell me why anyone thought it was suitable to publish such garbage? What is wrong with you idiots? This is someone's mother, daughter, sister, cousin. No matter what she decided to do with her body, it shouldn't be open for ridicule, especially considering she's no longer here! What sense does that make? It's one thing to be curious about the way she passed and to report the facts in an respectable fashion, but to do so in this way is completely tasteless. It's quite apparent that there are some incompetent writers with a poor sense of humor over at NY Mag and it's a damn shame that these jokers are so hell bent on reporting gossip all the freaking time that they can't even write a respectful post when it comes time to do so, as evidenced by the writer's poor excuse for publishing this crap - "Hey, commenters. We weren't at all trying to make fun of Donda West's death, which is certainly a terrible thing, but I can see how you'd be bothered by the headline, it's pretty flippant. I assure you there's no sinister reason for that, it's just sometimes there's a delay switching from the tone used for Gossip Girl coverage to one used for Obits."

Update 11/12/07 5:00PM: When I first posted this screenshot, there were only three comments from folks regarding this crude post. Now there are 18 comments and growing, with many calling for the removal of this post and/or it's writer Jessica Pressler. For example:

"To Jessica Pressler from New York Magazine, even after you were given the correct spelling of Dr. West's first name you still mis-spelled it, are you truly a journalist? You sound cynical, disrespectful, evil and ignorant, this is appauling and if you have anything to say...... direct it to me. I will plan a petition to your editor to ask for your removal and also contact the department of professional regulation if you do not issue an immediate apology and retraction from this article and it's title." - chefallyd

But my FAVORITE comment comes from a BBC journalist in London:

"Oh dear what a rather unfortunate tone New York magazine has decided to use for this piece of news. I appreciate you are trying to let you readers know, that you have more information than is being reported. However it shows that you lack the empathetic integrity that celebrated and skilled journalists have. Its very inappropriate and I am sad to say this to my colleagues in the business, I hope Kanye West and the rest of the hip hop fraternity show you the same contempt when you want an interview. Some albeit not many of her family members may of discovered her death on your page. Hope it was worth it, how very careless."

Well said, this was careless indeed!

Update 11/12/07 5:16PM:The editors over at NY Mag FINALLY made a change to this blog post, by renaming the headline to Kanye West's Mom Dies During Cosmetic Procedure:

Editor's Note: The original headline for this piece offended a few people, as the comments show. For the record, it was "Kanye West's Mom Goes Out Olivia Goldsmith Style" --a reference to the New York novelist who passed away after plastic surgery (you can read all about her here.)

Vito's Life Lessons:

Take time to do nothing, it's good for the soul

Week 39/52

--------------

Vito came out to the farm with me today. After the Border Collies were done with the sheep he and I went for a leasurely walk in the farmers field. He rolled on stuff, and zoomed around a bit. When I called him to go back he refused to move, and just sat there staring at me. It turned out to be my favorite photo of the day.

PS. We were very sad to miss last week! First time this year I've missed. No one to blame but myself, but it's still annoying. lol.

This dog is adorable. Really. Truly. It's a shame he's so naugty. ;)

View this in Large size to see the surreal 3D effect of the green shades. They show how many dimensions there are to every day life we never knew of.

The contrasts of nature's Greens show how different families of trees, though from the same family of chlorophyll and sunlight fueled life, can be.

The contrasts with the powder blue sky show how the univsere is our backdrop, to soar to whatever heights, in whatever directions, we dare to spread our wings, extend our branches.

But above all, the contrast I saw in this tree in my brother's lawn, in Sargodha, Pakistan, was how apparently humble, even weeping downwards, its leaves and branches were, while it continued to rise majestically to reach the fullest heights of its glory. That is the lesson of life I learnt in this trip to Pakistan.

What is Personal Kanban?

After a while you learn the subtle differences

between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

and you learn that love doesn't mean leaning

and company doesn't mean security...

and you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts

and presents aren't promises.

and you begin to accept your defeats

with your head held up and your eyes open,

with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child.

and you learn to build all your roads on today

because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain to plan,

after a while you learn even sunshine burns

if you get too much!

So plant your own garden and decorate your own soul,

instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers,

And you learn that you really can endure...

that you really are strong, and you really have worth!!

‘Love and intellect cannot stay together in one head.’ - His Holiness Younus AlGohar

Life lesson #1: You should NEVER turn your back on your big brother.

Todd Shea is the founder of Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) a Pakistan-based charity also registered in the US. Todd is a singer, musician and a songwriter who has traveled all over the World performing his music. Todd got his inspiration to play music during the dark teen age years he went through after his mother’s death. The difficult times that Todd experienced in his early years taught him many life lessons, and he developed strong feelings towards humanity and the desire to help people harmed by tragedy. Todd eventually began to use music to share his experiences and convey a healing message to help troubled teenagers to get through their own hard times.

On 9/11, Todd never knew that his life would take such a drastic change and he would find abilities which he wasn't even aware of before the unfortunate event which affected the entire World and destroyed thousands of families. Todd had been visiting New York for a musical concert but instead put his guitar down to respond to the tragedy he witnessed from his hotel room window. Since then Todd has been directly involved in many disasters, providing logistics and operational support.

Todd has been working with and supporting many missions and organizations responding to disasters. Todd’s experiences include volunteering after the disastrous tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2005 and in the same year he worked as a logistics coordinator and animal rescuer during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. He then worked to deploy a group of doctors to the Pakistan earthquake in October 2005. Since then he has been working in Pakistan to assist people who were affected by natural disasters and conflict. In 2010 he initiated a mission to deploy doctors in Haiti to help those affected by the devastating earthquake, in early 2011 he provided disaster relief services to tsunami victims in Japan, assisted in the coordination of relief during Hurricane Sandy in New York in 2012 and deployed to The Philippines to provide logistical support to several Humanitarian organizations responding to Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

In 2014, Todd and CDRS continued to operate a Mother & Child Health Center in Northern Swat and began a collaboration with Imran Khan Foundation (IKF) to provide Mobile Medical Teams and major health system support in Bannu for the people of North Waziristan who have been forced to flee fighting between the Pakistan Army and The Taliban, and for communities affected by the flood emergency in Puhjab and AJK. In 2015, CDRS plans to further expand their collaboration with IKF and work with many other partners on projects focusing on health, Women's Empowerment and the Welfare of Children.

(Always)
