Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo
The Hells Canyon Junior Rodeo is one of several rodeos annually in the town of Halfway Oregon and one of four major rodeos in Baker County. But don’t let the name fool you this may be a junior rodeo but these are real aspiring cowboys and cowgirls who take their rodeo seriously.
With 24 Oregon Century Farms and Ranches in Baker County, the working west is still a way of life in this Northeast corner of Oregon and is celebrated at these rodeos, two County Fair’s and numerous events throughout the year.

This week, I rode my electric bike straight up to Coyote Ridge, starting at sea level on Tennessee Valley Road, in the peaceful Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It’s a steep climb up a thousand feet, and I had to stop a couple times to catch my breath. But my trusty Benno Boost ebike gave me just the extra lift I needed to make it to the top of the hill.
From Coyote Ridge’s overlook, I enjoyed glorious views of Mount Tamalpais, Muir Beach and the Marin Headlands, as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. Other hikers and bikers stopped by to take in this majestic scene, as the golden hour transformed nature and humans alike.
I now go biking every day, to clear my head and stay healthy during the pandemic. We are incredibly lucky to have so many beautiful trails right in our own backyard. And I am grateful that our health crisis is nudging us all to exercise more and live more sustainably.
