Chef's choice special and some seaweed salad at Koyi Sushi in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I came downtown in my car (all 2 miles) quite reluctantly because of very uncertain weather tonight. I needed to grab some grub before the local Industrial show at the Fine Line and stumbled into Koyi (up on 4th St before 1st Ave) not quite sure what to expect.
At first I was disappointed by their overly simplified menu and steeper prices than I'm accustomed to. Only one "Sushi Dinner" was on the menu and just a few "special rolls" but there was a pretty decent list of non-sushi and non-seafood items. Nigiri was prices around $5 per pair with a pretty standard list. The appetizer list was decent though, or so it seemed, so I might stop in here for some lighter fare.
The sushi dinner was pretty good with some quite generous cuts on the nigiri. It came with 6 nigiri - chef's choice - with choice of a dynamite, California or tuna roll plus salad and miso. Not bad at $19 really. The rice was loose and a bit wet In both the roll and the nigiri but the generous cuts of fish totally made up for it. Rarely do I have to bite twice on nigiri but a few of them were more than a mouthful.
All in all it was a decent quick dinner close to my destination. Not a destination unto itself (like a certain downtown St. Paul competitor with a great happy hour who will remain unnamed) but it satisfied my sushi jones today for under $40.
